Stuck in the 80s

Boy Wonder

Lieutenant
Why did the production design shift so dramatically between season two and season three?

Visually the first two seasons look far more alien, with the dark hues and shadows and I really appreciate them. Was a bit miffed when the style was abandoned.

There was a trade off...the design became a little more expansive, FX broke free of the stock shots in season 3 and especially season 4 onwards, and the sotries were better overall, but I definitely do miss the photography, lighting and music of the first 2 seasons in later eps.

Same here. I felt the lighting was more dynamic and cinematic in those seasons, especially in episodes like "The Child," "Where Silence Has Lease" and "Time Squared," but in year three and beyond the ship was overlit and looked bland. It wasn't until GEN that the dynamic lighting scheme returned.

I've never really noticed a ''change'' except for the lighting, but other then that nothing. Then again, I havent seen TNG in quite some time.

I didn't really notice it growing up, but there are obvious differences between S1 and S2 and S3. Especially the uniforms... the early ones are a little laughable.

The lighting's basically down to Edward Brown retiring as DoP and being replaced by Marvin Rush, is it not? I think it gets more noticeable as the series goes on, so possibly Berman's preference for all the bland things in life has a greater impact. Rush was perfectly capable of dark, moody lighting - DS9's Crossover, for example. Brown seemed to use more gels and coloured lights, which were starting to look dated by the late eighties anyway. His setups were pretty unforgiving on the sets too.

Also there's a new title sequence, new uniforms, new phaser props, all of which looked more expensive and modern, plus a new Enterprise model which allowed for more elaborate visual effects on a regular basis.

I might be completely wrong on this, but didn't they move from 2" tape to 1" in the third season? Though if that were the case, you'd expect the first two seasons to look better. Probably rubbish that I've half-remembered from another show.

Also there's a new title sequence
Going back and seeing the title sequence for the first seasons almost makes me cringe. It seems kind of cheesy. But maybe that's just because I saw the later sequence for years before I ever saw the original.

I actually preferred the original title sequence, because it showed us moving out from Earth, thru our own solar system, and to the stars in one seamless take. The redone opening replaced our own system with some random meaningless planets.

Actually the newer intro is a trip from a galactic cluster (the "blue nebula") to a view of the milky way galaxy and then on a trip into it. More otherworldly. It's not like the Ent spends it's time in 'ol sector 001.
