STTMP music

I just recently rewatched ST 1.

In the scene where Kirk first sees the Enterprise the Theme from NG is playing I was dumbfounded I could not believe I did not notice that before.

Am I wrong or did it used to be something else and change with the directors cut release.

Of course the last time I saw the movie was probably 3 years ago.

No, you're right. When TNG became popular they decided to scrap the original theme by Lars Gnuderstardt and put in the theme Goldman wrote for TNG.

Thanks, beaker, I'd often wondered.

One question: if Goldman was busy bossing around the bionic man and learnig the saxophone, where'd he find time to compose music for Trek?

Well, it WAS the TMP theme before it was the NextGen theme.

;)

And it sounded better in TMP too...

But seriously, don't you agree that the use of the theme in TNG kinda took something away from TMP on repeated viewings? I'm a bigger TOS fan than TNG, but still I identify the theme a lot more with TNG. It feels strange to hear the music in TMP these days.

No.

As stated above, TNG recycled this music. I remember this differently from beaker. Maybe The God Thing can step in here and tell us which of our memories is correct. I'll trust whatever he says.

I'd be ecstatic if Orion Randy showed up to tell us the truth. I miss him a lot.

beaker was having a bit of fun with the n00b, who would have realized that TNG took the TMP music, not vice-versa if he'd simply bothered to see when each was made.

"Humor... it is a difficult concept."

Whew.

I was afraid I'd had one of those reality shifts again, when everything I know becomes slightly askew. Next you'll tell me Rush Limbaugh doesn't broadcast Monday Night Football anymore.

^^ Well' at least TMP didn't use that original TNG theme for the spacedock scene. Then people would be confusing it with 'Galaxy Quest'.

Whoa, what a temporal reality conundrum!

I thought McCarthy's theme was too... superhero... Captain Picard and the crew flying around in capes and tights... :wtf:
But his DS9 theme, OTOH... I loved it!

Woh, the beginning of this thread made my head spin.

For a second I thought I'd gone mad.

I've just got to say I've always loved the TMP music by Goldsmith. Even after hearing it so often in TNG, it hasn't diminished my love of the score one bit.

Credits with the original theme.
You know what the theme really needs to be done with? The Season Five credits.

(I'm also modestly embarrassed I know the opening credit visuals from that are those of ``Encounter at Farpoint'', when there are so many other things much more worth knowing.)

I know what you mean. TMP came out before I was born, and I always knew that theme as the TNG theme. I can even remember watching Star Trek V and thinking "They just re-used the TNG theme; how lame!" only to discover later that TNG was really the one that did the re-using.

Now, I just appreciate the TMP theme as the much grander sounding original version of the TNG theme; the way it was meant to be heard, similar to the way the theme from the Stargate movie sounds so much better than the SG-1 theme.

But I never had the experience of hearing the TMP theme before TNG existed, so I can't totally separate the two in my mind. (An even weirder experience was seeing an NFL highlight reel from the early 1980s that used the TMP theme in its soundtrack. At the time, I'm sure they chose it as an energetic movie theme, but now it's funny to hear that music as the soundtrack for football!)
