Strange New Worlds' showrunners advise fans to write to Skydance and Paramount if they're interested in a "Year One" Kirk sequel series

Aren't we supposed to be pushing the franchise FORWARD (as opposed to doing endless 23rd century reboots)?
It's the Golden Age of Exploration.
Look at how many people begged for that Star Trek Legacy show
Probably less than you'd think.
Every youtube channel in the world was building hype for it
Knowing some of the YouTube channels that were ringing the bell for it, I don't exactly think this helped their cause.
Instead we got Section 31
Yeah, it kinda sucked.
fucking Future Academy.
Haven't seen it, can't judge.
These are not executives who listen to fans
And yet we did get Strange New Worlds.
They're executives who tell fans what they should want
Pretty standard thing for executives to do.
I'm kind of done
Bye?
SNW really should have got 7 seasons.
Agreed.
But it was light years ahead of any other modern Trek
Also agreed.
If they couldn't get that to work
But Strange New Worlds does work. It got, or is getting five seasons. In absolutely no way is that a failure in this day and age.

We've had to deal with a writers/actors strike and the Paramount/Skydance merger (this is to say to say nothing of Donald Trump suing CBS for $20 billion because his fee-fees got hurt  ).

We've faced a great many more headwinds than the SNW campaign. We're doing our best under the circumstances.

Section 31 had been in development since 2018.

Forward means more than flipping the page of a calendar and putting “quantum” in front of words. Trek needs to move forward in the stories it tells and how it tells them. That can be done in any timeframe, including the 23rd Century.

I love SNW, but even if there weren't the current behind the scenes drama related to the merger, I don't think there was ever a serious chance of it getting seven seasons. Like it or not, we are in a world where five seasons is now the norm, especially on streaming platforms.

Yes, it is irksome the fifth season will be abbreviated, but I'll be happy with what we get.

Amen.

The tone and model of storytelling in TOS is very much rooted in the sixties. Star Trek should tell stories that reflect and comment on the modern day. That’s what we should take from TOS.

I dunno, I think we're currently seeing a shift away from the overuse of serialization and a rediscovery of the value of episodic storytelling, as reflected in shows like SNW and Lower Decks, as well as shows like The Mandalorian (sometimes more than others) and Poker Face. There's always a pendulum effect to these things, because our culture has no sense of moderation and we always take everything to an extreme, then react against it and swing back to the other extreme. If the modern day allows for Poker Face, which is a deliberate throwback to 1970s TV mysteries while also being modernized in its handling of that format, I don't think you can validly say the modern era precludes doing something on similar lines for Star Trek -- particularly since that's basically what SNW already is.

I’m fine with episodic.

Section 31 had been in development since 2018.

It was in development since 2018? Wow I didnt know that. It looks like it was cobbled together really quickly. Bad writing, sets and effects. I couldn't even tell what time period it was in. It looked so rushed.

It's not uncommon for projects to be in development for years or even more than a decade before they finally get put into active production. Development is just the idea phase, after all. The original idea was to do Section 31 as a TV series, but then Everything Everywhere All at Once happened and Michelle Yeoh was too much in demand, so they had to settle for a movie. It's been suggested, at least, that the story felt so rushed, superficial, and cluttered because it was compressed from a whole season arc.

It was in development as a TV series since 2018. The movie was a result of taking what was meant to be a ten episode story arc and condensing it into an hour and a half.

I suppose the question is, when did the writers get the word to condense it down? How long did they have to do that before the script was locked? April 2023 was when it was publicly announced as a tv movie.
