STP? In these parts STP stands for Sewage Treatment Plant. I'd go for STPIC, or if I'm lazy, just PIC.
I'll call it pIqaD and insist it's actually just televised Klingon language courses. Voted PIC, but seriously, I'll just type it out as Picard, it's short enough. I always type out Discovery too anyway.
This is reminding me that, as a kid, I used to get mixed up and call those SST ripcord racers STPs. PIC reminds me picture or .pic file extensions too much, or pica, the condition where people eat dirt. I like STP, particularly as something to throw back at people who think they are clever calling Discovery STD.
...What is this? I've never heard any of these. Other than the actual title or speaking the letters, I only hear "next-gen" or "disco". Who is pronouncing text abbreviations? Anyway, for the new show I'll just be writing it out. Star Track Pickard.
Like “STD”, STP would be generated by false analogy with STID and STB, where Star Trek is part of the titles (trekking into darkness and beyond).
There has NEVER been a universal convention for movie and tv shows abbreviations. Some insist that all movies begin with ST (STTMP, STTWoK), many don't care (TMP,TVH,TUC,FC..), some well accepted and some official abbreviation definitely conflict with each other. VOY/VGR, DIS/DSC. I don't imagine this will change with STP/PIC either.
The question is what fits the official style, as promoted primarily by the Star Trek Encyclopedia on the basis of earlier fandom tradition, going back to Trimble’s Concordance.
I know what you meant, but in the spirit of never letting this thread slide off-topic (ever), I’ll answer a more appropriate question by saying that production acronyms aren’t canon unless they’re also used in-universe, eg. as shuttle codes (DSC 01, pronounced “Disco One”) or station acronyms (DS9). This could be sort of an argument for JLP, though PIC seems to be the most neutral candidate thus far.
What happens if it turns out that Jean-Luc owns a personal shuttle with the registration code JLP-01?
Fifteen years ago there seemed to have been a general agreement as to what "canon" meant. Now, not so much.
