Stories You've Watched Recently

I hate it primarily for the horrid garish electronic music and the panto women 'Cryons' - not for the self indulgent navel gazing...

just watched Day of the Daleks, a story i loved in novel form as a sprog. thankfully, the TV version holds up. really enjoyed it. will have to get it on DVD when it's released...

one thing that did confuse me, I'm pretty sure the novel had the scene with the two versions of Three and Jo seeing themselves from 'the other side' so to speak, yet the TV version doesn't. Am i mad or was that added in the book? anyone know? TARDIS wiki has no info...

Yeah, the music's hardly City of Death. That aside though, I find a lot to enjoy. And I do like the Cybes.

I just watched The Romans for the first time. I really liked it. The most amazing thing to me is how little "Doctor" there was in Doctor Who at the time--he couldn't have been onscreen for more than 40% of the story. When he was, though, he was great.

I recently watched "Pyramids of Mars" since it's the most recent addition to my DW DVD collection.

I've tried watching some Davison era stories but... I have a hard time doing so. He's probably my least favourite Doctor, for reasons I've never been able to pin down.

^I feel for you, Josan. I started watching with Tom Baker, and always wanted to like Davison, but just never connected with his Doctor like I did with Baker's. I don't think I'm alone.:)

It seemed like the show's creators were getting a little too complacent, or something.

Pyramids of Mars is a good one. Always crack up when the two mummies do the boob crush of death on that one guy, though. Those were some amply-endowed automatons!

Pah phillistines the lot of ya!

Davison is awesome, AWESOME I tells ya!

Actually a good Doctor let down by some ropey stories at times.

I just watched "Frontier in Space" and what I like is the "epicness" of the story. If I hadn't seen it before, the Master's appearance would have been shocking. It goes from a possible interstellar war to Doctor/Master conflict back to preventing an interstellar war. We actually get to know about the Draconians and Humans and we get to know their motivations and connect with what they're actually feeling... unlike in some fast-paced stories from 2005 onwards like "The Doctor's Daughter" where I didn't really care about the weird aliens and the humans.

Just been watching The Sensorites - well... the first episode so far. Strangely enough, this is the first time I've sat down to watch this one. I started nodding off toward the end...

I like how the graphic symbol on the Master's tunic (and spacecraft) is a stylised dalek head, but it doesn't look out of place since the design is in keeping with the other symbols worn by other characters - it's a very subtle hint given early on of who the Master is in league with.

I think the Fifth Doctor era marks a low point for the classic show. Davison might be a decent actor, but his character was bland and uninteresting. You'd think that whiny bitch Tegan was the main character. I certainly don't dislike the Fifth Doctor, but the combination of a bland Doctor, probably my least favourite companion of the old show whining all the time, and a lot of weak stories means I'm not a huge fan. When Bidmead said in that DWM interview about Tennant being "an actor who hasn't got a character to play", I find that criticism far more applicable to the Fifth Doctor. His costume didn't help either; beige costume for a beige Doctor. I'd stress I certainly don't blame Davo for it; he's a good actor. But the Fifth Doctor didn't have enough of a definable character for me.

Well I think Davison was harking back in many ways to when the Doctor perhaps wasn't always the main focus of the story as in the Hartnell/Troughton eras.

I don't think he's bland, I think he's just far quieter and more subtle than the Doctor who came before him or the Doctor who came after.

I mean seriously if you look at the first five Doctors it's pretty clear which one is the odd one out and it isn't Davison. People think of Tom as the Doctor but there's precious little of Hartnell, Troughton or Pertwee in his performance whereas at least Davison tried to protray that this was the same man whilst still being different.

He isn't a natural Doctor, I concede that, but he acts the Doctor very well and its just a shame he didn't get better stories (but you could argue the same of Colin and Sylvester as well)

and Tegan's one of the best companions ever :techman:

I don't blame Davo for any of it at all: barring a couple of Davos and McCoys (& Peri!), I'd quite happily write off the 1980s in their entirety...

just watched this one myself. i agree, it's really good. a lot going off-camera obviously! would love to see the Draconians reappear...

I recently got the box set of the second series and, as it has German subtitles, I was finally able to show an episode of Doctor Who to my parents. I chose The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. It was still great, though Tennant could have been a bit more subtle when he faces 'Satan'. I hadn't really noticed that the first time around. Anyway, my parents really liked it, too.

As for Classic Who, I'm still watching my way through the old series in chronological order, and the last story I completed is The Abominable Snowman, though 'watching' is probably not the right word... I really liked that one and the one surviving episode makes me think this was actually an awesome serial when it was still complete. The Yetis look more cute than scary, though. There's also this great scene where the Doctor marches up to one of the Yetis with a screwdriver and disables it. When asked by Jamie how he knew he wouldn't be attacked, he says, "Would you walk up to a creature like that with just a screwdriver in your hand?" I think that sums up the Doctor pretty well.

I've just ordered a dvd of the first few episodes. I've seen "unearthly child" before but never seen the first dalek ep so really looking forward to it. I doubt the bbc will show them again any time soon. I guess they're still embarrased about destroying old episodes. What a waste.

Most of the first season is actually complete. It would be cool if they aired the Classic series (at least as far as it still exists) again some day.
