STO: Torp Launcher question.

I recently made lvl 40 and picked out a star cruiser. The Default Armament it came with was 2 MKVIII Phasers and 2 MKVIII Photon Torp launchers both fore and aft. Now I thought it was a waste to have more than one Torp Launcher in any facing because they share the same cooldown. I was never able to stagger fire multiple torps unless I used Torpedo spread...am I wrong? if not, why would a ship come with 25% of its banks filled with usless weapons?

No one keeps the standard load out.
You cant really go wrong if you use 6 beams and two torps on a cruiser.

There are soem viable torpedo boat builds i think, but you should use a science vessel for those that turns a lot faster.
Liek the Intrepid or Luna.

With some high quality doffs you can reduce teh cooldown on torpedos enough to make it work rather well.
A science ship can use some good shield stripping abilities to land most of the torps on the hull.
Two torps front and one in the rear sounds reasonable to me for such a build. The rest tetryon duals beams and a beam array.
Never tried it though.
So no idea if this would work.
 
Yep. I have a Mk XI Quantum in front and a Mk XI Photon in back. I can fire the fore torp, hit Evasive, slide under the enemy and fire the aft torp, all in about 5 seconds. By the time I turn around, I can fire the fore torp again. A good doff will make having a torp launcher a real asset.
 
I have also heard a player claim that with the right stacking of Borg doffs, it is possible to get a pair of quantum torpedo launchers to fire a torpedo every 3-4 seconds. Its something that I'm going to test out once I get enough EDCs to purchase said Borg doffs.
 
For me - I have a two torp setup on all my ships at high level:

MKXI Quantun Forward (on manual fire)
MKXI Hargh'peng Aft (on autofire)

IMO - works well in PvE and PvP.
 
I've used them to some degree of success. They're more of a way of slowing your enemy down, because their kinetic damage is negligible.

In the chat box, type /screenshot_ui_jpg
Press Enter

It will be in your screenshots folder. :)

On Tribble, I had a science ship with two photon torps on front on autofire. Had a purple DOFF that reduced the cooldown so they were firing about every 3 secs, 1 sec apart. His beam weapons were Tetryon targetting shields. So the strategy was drop the shields, pound with the torps till dead. It worked extremely well. That was in PvE. I'm sure that in PvP, it would be more difficult to pulloff. Human opponents usually don't cooperate.

About a "shared cooldown". The last time I attempted two torps together the delay between the two firing ranged from a min of 1 sec to a max of 2 secs. I'm not aware if that's been changed.

If I were outfitting a ship for PvP, I would replace torps with beams or turrets. Perhaps keep a mine launcher for spamming.

Any Help with Kitting out this ship would be appreciated, also if anyone could direct me to a site that lists all the consoles and benefits gained, that would be Awesome as well. Thanks for all the help so far guys.

At first glance, this is a very defensive ship designed to be a tank - take a lot of damage. Conversely, because she only have 2 tactical console slots, she can't dish too a lot of damage unless all 8 weapon banks are firing simultaneously.

All this dictates that this ship should use weapons with wide attack arcs and the ship should be be broadsiding opponents so as to bring all 8 weapons to bear. My recommendation would be to abandon torpedos and use 8 beam arrays. This also allows you to stack 2 identical consoles to boost your beam weapon's damage. To counter energy issues with using so many weapons, 2 EPS engineering consoles are necessary. You may also want to add 1 RCS engineering console to improve the ship's turning rate.

Thanks for the Links, Most Helpful, I now realize most of the consoles I had were utterly useless for my crew skills...I'm sure you're right about the beams, but it seems weird commanding a starship without torpedoes

I have all anti-Borg XII weaponery in my escort, and use just one purple Borg doff for the torpedo cooldown - this with quantum and photon. I tried more then one of the purple Borg doffs, but saw no noticeable cooldown improvement beyond the 3 seconds.

That's because the additional purple borg doff just increases the chance that there will be a 5 second cooldown reduction. So if 1 purple doff is 20% chance, 2 purple doffs gives 40% chance and 3 purple doffs gives 60% chance of firing a torpedo every 3 seconds instead of every 8 seconds.
