STO for beginners?

There are several good sites for helping new players, such as Wiki for the game and also the STO Academy. On the wiki, there is a Basic Guide, which is quite helpful for new players.

Some things have changed over the last few years, such as the skill planner, as the old model was a mess. Now it's much better, as is crafting. Best to do with crafting is do the 20 hour missions for which ever school you want, until get it to level 15. Can max this three times per day. Virtually all my characters can craft and many of them have multiple schools that are beyond 15.

Thanks @ElimParra.

I think part of my problem is that I'm playing on PS4, and some things seem to work very differently. I also can't join any of the fleets I want to. And I can't seem to find any info on fleets I get asked to join. Overall, its an extremely frustrating experience.

The console experience is very much different than the PC version. I mean, content and story are the same, but the *feel* is totally dissimilar. I think it's mostly the controls, to be honest.

@TheSublimeGoose different how btw PC & console? Part of my issue is that I'm looking for something to do while recovering from a hand injury. I have a one handed controller that works very well on my PS4. Is it possible to play one handed on PC?

I really like the game, but I'm so frustrated with the PS4 version that I've decided to quit. I thought it'd be out of having to struggle so much with understanding the game after a month of playing 6-7 hours a day. Its just not fun anymore.

It feels clear that the team spent a lot of time porting STO to consoles. They made it feel like a console game fairly decently. I'm not sure what hand is hurt/what sort of mobility you have in said hurt hand, but I'll try and answer your question regarding that-

If it's your left hand that's hurt, then yes, you could pry play on PC. Especially if you can use a finger or two. Might be fairly difficult if you have no use of your fingers.

If it's your right hand that's hurt, I don't know how you could play without the mouse.

Caveat to all this is, however- it's still the exact same game. The control make it feel different, but it still has the same content, the same everything. That's the reason I stopped playing as well- there was too much content, and most of it was pretty vacuous and empty feeling. And that's after putting in dozens of hours to understand it all.

I can recommend plenty of great games while you're recovering, however;

On the cheaper side, there's Stardew Valley for both consoles and PC. It's a wonderful, relaxing, and extremely addicting Harvest-Moon style farming simulator. Fantastic game. Only 14.99 and I have MORE than gotten my money back from it, and then some.

Subnautica is one of the *very* few "survival-crafting" games I've not only enjoyed, but found to be one of my favorite games. It's crafting system is not too complicating or overburdening. The sense of wonder, discovery, and exploration I get from this game is unmatched. No other game has allowed me to feel like I'm *actually* exploring and discovering things. Only $19.99, albeit still in early access, and currently only for PC and Xbox One.

Everyone is giving the new Mass Effect: Andromeda a hard time. Yes, they could have taken more time to polish some of the animation, absolutley. But I still give it a solid 8.5/10. Great story, if a slow build-up. It makes you feel like a colonist, like a pioneer. Fairly decent combat. Terrible menu and inventory system, though. Ugh.

And, of course, there's The Witcher 3. Words aren't enough to describe this masterpiece. I'm hoping you've played it, but I understand if you don't game all that much or what have you. Incredible RPG. The devs, CD Projekt Red are also super fan-friendly. All of what would normally be "DLC" is totally free; new armor packs, weapons, etc. The only paid DLC are two *actual* expansion packs- one adding 15-20hrs of gameplay, another close to 30-40. You can pick up the complete edition, all DLC and expansion, for like... 30 bucks? It was actually on sale for 15 on the Xbox One store a couple weeks ago, too.

Anyways, hope that helps! Any more questions about STO or the games I recommended, hit me up!

As long as you can use a mouse and make sure you are a bit overpowered, the game is totally one handable. You can move and steer with the mouse by holding down both buttons, and click your power. You can set stuff to auto fire, and if you have a gaming mouse with extra buttons, can set those how you like...I think I have mine set to cycle targets, but maybe ship speed is better. Ground battles you won't be dodging, but a decent away team should fix that.....you don't really need to jump, but poking the space bar might be handy. Get well soon. :)
