I have to admit the "tail" looks a little weird in the second pic - it just seems to stick too far out from the shuttlebays doors, though admittedly I don't know what to suggest.

It's pointing up, so torp launcher is out. I'm thinking that's an aft phaser, but it doesn't match the type-10 phaser strips on the saucer. Maybe it's just a docking umbilical.

No, i mean the circle at the top of the spine, pointing out from the ship.

Agreed. The tail doesn't seem as odd to me in those pictures, so maybe it was just an angular thing. In any case, I do appreciate your letting me nitpick a little, Forbin.
