Still in a kitbashing mood

So, I saw this Gundam model at the comic shop:

and thought "Hmmmm..."

A little sheet plastic, a few spare parts, a LOT of Aves:

And here's what I have so far:

I'll be using those cool Steadler highlighters for nacelles (the ones I used on my AMTronic shuttle bash), as soon as I figger out some pylons.

The fun part is trying to use ONLY parts from the Gundam kit, with minimum extras. So far the 1/2500 E-D deflector and the 1/1400 E-C hangar doors (plus the sheet plastic and putty of course) are the only non-kit parts.

Hmm, looks like you might have something interesting there. Can't see how it's going to turn out.

You might be able to make some nice looking stubby nacelles from the engine type things you cut out of your 'saucer' attached to those thumb looking things on top of the model in the box picture.

And if they're too stubby, maybe use the articulation pieces from the arm to lengthen them and give them some warp coil looking mechanical detail.

Make any sense?

Very interesting design, like a future starship (post-Next Gen era). Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Was the model pre-painted red? Or is that the color you're going with?

Sean

Forbin, you have a first class imagination!!

Wow... I have one of those Gundam kits, I picked it up with some other mecha kits at a model swap meet.

I was thinking of making a futuristic fighter plane out of mine.

I'll follow this thread, I soooo want to see how your model comes out.

Forbin, your kitbashes are better than most premade models. Keep up the good work. you have a fan here.

Neither, it's made of red plastic. I'll be painting it blue & green like the 1701-D.

How about using the vertical part of the stand for the pylons. Slice it down the middle, add some sheet styrene.

Nope, none of the kit parts look right.
I've stolen the pylons from a 1/2500 E-D and reversed them. Looks decent. Gotta find a good way to attach the magic markers now.

Forbin - I have said it before (multiple times) and i will say it again - You need to be in the model making industry (movie props, etc.). You have the imagination to turn soemthing that is not meant to look like a startship AT ALL and make it into a beauty thus far.

Can't wait to see the finished project (or that no-doubt-upcoming 2008 Kitbash calendar :D)!!!

I tell you one thing, when I win the lottery (any day now, at least that is what I tell myself) and I obtain the license for Star Trek models, I am giving you a call.

Again, great work.

I was thinking maybe this could be a future Drone/Patrol ship of the 25th Century

Well oppps was also thinking like a redo or a severly better version of the Mars Primeter ships or something a Starbase would luanch in case of attack Small and nible little 50 to 100 meter ships which are Drones as in no crew
but a small A.I unit installed

Final config. Red parts and dark gray parts - Gundam kit. White - Evergreen plastic sheet and shapes. Deflector and nacelle pylons from 1/2500 E-D. Shuttle doors from 1/1400 E-C. Some spare phototetch detail bits here and there. The bridge is a part of one of the little Gundam robots in the kit. Nacelles are Staedtler highlighters. In the end, she'll be 1701-D blue/green overall.

And yes, the snap-fitness of the kit gave me a way to make functional saucer sep!

At 1/1400 she's about the same saize as the original E

Looks good. Though, just honest opinion here, the highlighters look a little out of proportion to the rest of the ship-- they do have the perfect shape though.

Hmm, those clear ink barrels look perfect from some warp-blue LEDs

Hmm, the spikiness and red color makes it look agressive, maybe an alternate universe vessel (i.e. the Terran Empires I.S.S. Enterprise -C, a Conqueror-class ship (since the Empire has wouldn't send an ambassador ;)))

Yeah, the highlighters are a bit bigger than I'd like for the size of the ship. But what the hey.

Maybe a modern replacement for the Connie then?

I like the ship a lot, almost as much as the Reeses. ;)
