Stephen Collins Allegedly Confesses to Child Molestation

Historically, the Catholic Church, and it's children were designed to appropriate and hide homosexuals from angry villagers with raised pitchforks.

All priests are gay.

It was one of the few ways for an unmarried man to get away with not being drowned in the river for being gay.

I assume this is a sense of humour, otherwise incredibly ignorant...?

Why would you assume that that is a sense of humour?

That's disgusting.

I expect you to put $5 in my paypal account immediately to demonstrate your contrition.

Um... Stephen Collins didn't play a priest in 7th Heaven. The character was a minister in a Protestant church. Also, ministers in Protestant denominations are traditionally allowed to marry.

Hard to put into words how I feel about this. Dismay to start with. I know Collins from TMP, not 7th Heaven, so to me, the smudge is on Trek. That's my personal perception, regardless of the media focus.

No, TMP was never my favorite Trek movie, and I this incident will give me pause the next time I decide to run through a watching of the films, which I do every couple of months. Will I watch TMP again? Absolutely. Will I be silly enough to fast forward the Decker scenes? No. Will this be in the back of my head. Yep.

I always skip Decker's scenes because of Decker.

I've enjoyed Seventh Heaven inside and out of religion. I hope Collins has escaped this kind of perversion by now, and that the women involved haven't been traumatized.

Indeed - he's probably the only thing in the world that can make me briefly thankful for Jonathan Frakes. He's like a version of Riker based entirely on that one whiney scene in Star Wars where Luke wants to go to Tosche Station to get power converters.

Damn! I'd only just got my hands on Tales of the Gold Monkey. Taint like this doesn't go away, although I hope the allegations turn out to be groundless.

So many UK celebrities have fallen foul of this sort of thing in recent years that watching seventies and eighties TV is a potential minefield. Even more recent stuff. I was finally rewatching Life on Mars, and I'd completely forgotten that Jimmy Saville had a 'vocal' cameo in the final episode. Talk about throwing me out of the story.

I just wish I could erase that part of my memory that reads and hears these news reports.

Someone on another board has already suggested that given technology nowadays it would be easy to replace him with another actor on a future re-release of the movie.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Smacks of Stalinist airbrushing at worst and is a complete waste of time and money at best.

How far do we take it? Replace Roman Polanski's cameo in Chinatown or Rush Hour 3? Maybe replace Mel Gibson on his movies, given his apparent anti-semitism and alleged domestic violence?

Many actors are not nice people and have done horrible things. Doesn't take away from the films they've been in.

Digitally replace him with a Muppet.

Keep the same audio tracks.

Just have him picking his nose and eating boogers the hole time.

Wait, 40 years ago? That changes things a little. Provided he is honestly repentant.
I vehemently disagree. One of my junior high teachers was recently convicted for raping one of my classmates 40 years ago. He's trying to wiggle out of his jail sentence, but nobody in town but his lawyer has any sympathy for him.

I despise Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic attitudes, Charlton Heston's ravings about his guns, and IF Collins is proven guilty, I'll despise that as well.

But will I burn my copies of Hamlet, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Planet of the Apes, ST:TMP, and Tales of the Gold Monkey?

No. These actors are not the entirety of the movies they were in, and I've no wish to deprive myself of enjoying the performances of Helena Bonham Carter, Yul Brynner, Roddy McDowall, the rest of the Star Trek cast, and many others.

That person is an idiot.

Well, it "can" be done. Whether or not it can be done well, done cheaply or would be worth the effort are completely other matters. And it depends on one's definition of "easy." I think it's just easier to consider the guy wasn't in enough movies/TV shows to worry about having to see any of his work again. I mean, really, how often *does* one watch Star Trek: TMP?

It can be done but if it were to be done in every instance of a film featuring an actor who did something unpleasant, there'd be a full-team of SFX experts working round the clock. Collins' disgusting behaviour has nothing to do with his performance in TMP.

It would be much less expensive to recut the movie to take out the character.

Of course, Star trek the Motion picture would now be twenty minutes long.

I'm a little confused about the "recording someone without their knowledge" thing--that doesn't seem like it would be admissible, but then again, I'm not well-versed in criminal law.

The laws of each state vary. It depends on the jurisdiction.

In some states both parties must know that the conversation is being recorded.

In other states as long as one party knows, its legal.

People aren't gay because it's easier to predate on children, they're gay because that's what they were

It should be noted, however, that some experts are saying that pedophiles are "born that way" as well. From a recent New York Times:
  • By some estimates, 1 percent of the male population continues, long after puberty, to find themselves attracted to prepubescent children. These people are living with pedophilia, a sexual attraction to prepubescents that often constitutes a mental illness. Unfortunately, our laws are failing them...

(Note: I am not saying all gays are pedophiles, just saying that using the "born that way" defense has some slippery slope connotations and one may be better off drawing a distinction between acts involving consenting adults and acts involving minor children.)

Scandal On ‘Scandal’! Stephen Collins Cut From Shonda Rhimes’ Hit Show In Wake Of Sexual Molestation Allegations

Not to defend Collins if he's guilty but its interesting how people are firing him left and right while at the same time Woody Allen and, especially, Roman Polanski continue to, not only find work, but enjoy universal respect among the Hollywood elite. Maybe Collins needs to go into directing.

Strange how some accused are considered a  while others get a :techman:.
