Status of McFarlane DSC Action Figures & Toys?

McFarlane recently announced that they've picked up three pretty major licenses: Harry Potter, Mortal Combat and DC (Batman, Superman, etc.). Those seem like big wins that could further distract the company from Trek stuff, which already doesn't seem like much of a priority.

I do so love random statements about the state of a fandom that says nothing about said fandom except for the state of mind of the person who made the statement, who considers him/herself the whole representation of said fandom.

Or something along those lines I guess.

Star Trek toys have been a mess for years, it's not limited to Discovery - half of the TOS/Berman stuff that gets announced never materializes either.

Seems like the only Trek things that get reliably released are the Anovos high end items, Eaglemoss ships, QMx badges and what seems to be an endless stream of random kitschy crap.

I'd guess the problem is a combination of factors, including: an older skewing fanbase, too many licensors selling similar things, apparently minimal big box retailer interest, etc.

This doesn't really say anything, as the market has shifted and even Star Wars doesn't move merchandise like it used to.

The Star Wars merchandise failing is just a result of how mediocre the new films and characters were received by the demographics who generally buy this stuff.

Marvel MCU merchandise, especially Marvel Legends, is doing quite well. Black Panther merchandise sold out so quickly that they had to put together an entirely new BP toy wave nearly a year after the film came out to satisfy consumer interest.

I'm not surprised McFarlane is getting cold feed about the Discovery line. Who the hell would want Michael Burnham or L'Rell merchandise? lol. Aside from a few hardcore fans, that stuff has the potential to be discount bin peg-warmers like Rose Tico toys.

Glad McFarlane got DC. That will probably kill the Star Trek line.

Just curious...we know about the phaser issue that was discussed last year, with the various laws concerning toy firearms, but I've not heard much anything else concerning the status of the REST of the Discovery toy line...has there been any indication whether McFarlane toys WILL start making Discovery toys or not?

Its stupid that they are saying they couldn't work out "legal issues" with the Phaser despite Anovos and another company both making replicas.

Im thinking about looking into 3D printing.

I've read that QMx is also concerned they may need to do additional orange for their replica, which seems to be similarly trapped in limbo - not sure why Anovos isn't having issues, maybe due to the high price and low number being produced? I also beleive they are selling it direct and not using their extended distributors, which I could see playing a role. Rubies Costumes is also supposed to have a toy version, but it hasnt materialized either - their TOS and '09 phasers are pretty fluorescently colored, so likely a rattlecan of Krylon will be needed if their Disco phaser ever sees the light of day.

Almost certainly. I just an ad for an Anovos Stormtrooper rifle, and in addition to it being shipped unassembled and molded in bright orange plastic, it had a "THIS IS A REPLICA PROP, NOT A TOY" disclaimer.

Amusing, considering that prop, along with pretty much every other weapon-like prop in the early Wars movies were made from actual blank-firing weapons, some dating back to WWII. The Stormtrooper weapon is based off a British Sterling SMG. They also used WWII German MG-34’s, MG-42’s and STG-44’s, among many others.

This whole red muzzle thing pisses me off. IIRC, it all started because cops kept shooting kids who were playing with toy squirt guns or some such. I don’t think any other country has such an idiotic law. Or cops that can’t tell the difference between a Glock 17 and a fucking phaser.

No it is a resin one from China via eBay......comes painted already for about $25. Weight is about the same as TWC too.

It's a matter of cost as well, not just getting around the legalities.

It wasn't squirt guns but BB guns which are often modeled off of real weapons, like the Glock 17 or the HK USP. Same thing with Airsoft guns which are also modeled to look like the real thing. These laws are strictest in California, which means they have to be CA legal in order to even go through the state via shipping. If McFarlane's major distribution is through a CA port then they would have to do so.

I just don't get how a replica can be screen accurate, but a collectible toy prop that looks the SAME has to have orange tips...........especially when it looks nothing like any actual firearm.
