Starting Voyager on Amazon again

So, I after binging out on other programing over the summer, i am going back to going through ALL Start Trek series' and starting with Voyager this time.

I still find it odd that in the first episode, Janeway said to Harry Kim that she didn't like being called "Sir" and that calling her "ma'am" works in a crunch.

However, Paris always calls her that more often than not.

Old habits die hard. ;)

Oh that Harry. He can't do anything right. Doh!

Actually, i never liked that scene because it suggests that gender roles and confusion about them are still maintained. The idea that Harry would be befuddled because... OMG, the captains a woman!! How should I address her?! Ma'am, M'Lady, Bitch, Vagina carrier? What!??

That just didn't make any sense. I'd like to think being a female captain wouldn't remotely matter in the 24th century. Obviously, it was put in there for the benefit of the 20th century audience (hey everyone, first female Trek captain) but in-universe, it was silly and unnecessary.

Enjoy your re-watch.

That's something I also noticed this time around. Paris calling her that and she doesn't seem to mind.

I would think that Harry would have been around plenty of female officers while at Starfleet Academy. I just assumed he was nervous because this was his first assignment and he had been taught to call the officer in charge 'sir' regardless of gender.

Well, according to official Star Fleet protocol, any female in a position of command is called "Sir" ... I remember that being explained to Nog when Dax took over as captain of the Defiant.

Plus, Janeway does say and I am paraphrasing... "despite Star Fleet Protocol...I don't want to be called sir."

I Just started Voyager again too. I was wondering why they didn't have a scene with Sisko and Janeway talking about the Maquis, and why didn't Tom get provision ranks too he wasn't anymore Starfleet than the Maquis.

From a commercial standpoint, DS9 just wasn't as popular as TNG so there was less reason to do a Sisko/Janeway scene.

From a creative standpoint, the Picard/Sisko scenes were used to contrast the differences between the captains and series in order to establish the tone of DS9. Voyager's pilot did that without having to directly compare to previous shows. Of course, they basically abandoned that format and became TNG-lite within weeks, but that's a different discussion...

I totally agree that it would of been super cool to have Sisko and Janeway discuss the Maquis to start things out. Nice idea!

I don't know why Tom wasn't just brought straight to DS9 and then have the offer put on the table there. If he refused they could just take him home.

I suppose though they wanted to drive home the fact that he was actually in prison. A futuristic nice prison but still prison and of course Janeway could have had other business on earth.

More Sisko is always a good thing and I'm sure they did discuss the Maquis off camera.

In my perfect world The Enterprise would have been there too and Picard, Sisko, and Janeway would have been having a discussion about it since they all have had dealings with them. Maybe have a captured Ro reluctantly helping out then be on Voyager?
