Starship Security

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me why it seems to be ridiculously easy to steal a Starfleet ship?
The delta flyer, Voyager and even the Enterprises get taken over several times, not only can the invaders fly them right away but there doesn't seem to be any "lock" that stops anyone activating a ship or shuttle.

Yeah mostly plot...
But I like to think it's really about the fact that, great as they are, Starfleet are not the best at everything in the universe. And many species just have better engineering/hacking/whatever skills. They learn and improve but ultimately there is always another species out there with different and/or better tech that makes it possible for them to hijack Starfleet ships.

Yeah... All you really need to do is command your people to 'Bypass security measures' and you're in! I just have to believe that it's not so much that Starfleet is terrible. Probably Starfleet personnel would find it really hard to bypass their own security measures...but other aliens have way better ...um..bypassing skills..?

In Voy: Pathfinder, LT. Barcleys access to the midas lab was revoked. All he did was open up a panel below the control and shine a light on it for a few seconds, which gave him full access lol

:guffaw:
Yeah...well let's say Barclay was just ultra-familiar with the tech in that lab, perhaps? ...I'm reaching here for realism...but struggling!

At least TNG and the Defiant in DS9 had protocols for locking out or rerouting command functions, though those protocols probably weren't used as often as they should have been. Not sure we ever saw that used in VOY.

As well as manual overrides that required power.

Starfleet even has access codes approved in advance and very rarely changes those codes when they are compromised.

Why should the gender of the security officers be in any way relevant?

seen those embarrassing videos of new york city ladycops struggling to arrest someone 3 on 1, etc? women are great in alot of ways, physical might though? come on. there's a reason that even when that ronda rousey bluster was at its most obnoxious, noone would consider sanctioning a female/male bout

i gotta say, this PC culture is really starting to get to me. now you guys act like you're shocked that there could even be a difference in the sexes? ever interacted with a 100 pound girl, the type starfleet loves to put in security? ever playwrestled or tested strength bit during intercourse or something? they're as physically imposing as children and i'm not exaggerating

But when phasers are involved, this is surely less relevant. Obviously in general in physical hand-to-hand it would be preferable to send men, but this shouldn't normally be the case in Star Trek, given that security ought to be well armed and able to set to stun and take down intruders.
We're also just talking about humans here but no doubt if there was a Vulcan female on the security team, she would make the human men look pathetic in physical strength.

true enough. although i doubt vulcans get into security all that much. a few notable exceptions withstanding
