Starship Saratoga

Hey everyone,

I'm still busy at work finishing up Yorktown: A Time to Heal with Stan Woo. Once that film is finished, I am beginning work on a new project called Starship Saratoga. The film will be set after the events of Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country, and set onboard a Miranda class vessel. Roland Baron will be doing the FX, and the Miranda class vessel has already been rendered in CGI.

Filming will take place in Toronto, and I am presently making arrangements with the actors union (ACTRA) to use union actors in the production. Filming will start in Summer 2012. Right now we are still polishing up the script. The film will use some characters from the Yorktown film, Klingons(!), and Lt. Saavik will be a member of the crew. Some of the actors have already been cast, and I will be posting pictures of them shortly.

Is the actor's union not going to make you pay the actors?

ACTRA is similar to SAG, so like New Voyages/Phase 2, the actors who are in the union would have to be paid. I have been in talks with the union this past week, and they are very supportive of the production. The rates are still being worked out, since this is a non-for-profit fan film, but it will be a reasonable rate. Only a few of the actors will be members of the union. We will be doing fundraising in Toronto over the year to help cover production costs.

^^^I was under the impression that (somehow) the SAG actors were not paid for their Phase II appearances. I honestly don't know how it works so I'll see if other posters are more knowledgeable. I thought no money could change hands for actual acting in these things. Pay a fellow to help you build your bridge, whatever, that was fine, but no actors.

Or, am I totally wrong?

I believe that Phase II and some other productions (OGAM, for example) pay their actors. I'm sure Yorktown II did so.

Yes, that is correct. George Takei filmed his scenes back in 1986 for Yorktown, but permission from SAG was required for him to be in it. George Takei and the other SAG actors who have worked on Phase II have been paid (I believe the actors on Phase II were "paid to scale", so it was at a fixed sum per day.) There is nothing wrong with paying actors to appear in fan films.

The only issue with studios is that the fan films can not generate any money or revenue for the people producing them, as it would be an infringement on their copyrights. Paying an actor for their contribution does not infringe on that copyright as the actors are paid only once for their work. There are no residuals to be made off of it.

Ahh, curse my Ontarian heritage and my current Calgarian location! Would've loved to be part of this...

There are always possibilities...

For Yorktown, I had an actor playing a Klingon film a scene in the US that he sent to us for the pilot's viewscreen shot. We might be able to work something in, like you reporting to the bridge from engineering or something, that you could film yourself. Drop me a line and we can talk.
