Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

?????

For the short time that Fuller was in charge, Eaves was working for him.
Fuller pushed Eaves in that design direction, not the other way around.

Eaves has indicated that he first along drew TOS comparable designs that were rejected by Fuller.

That's not "second hand" info.

You've completely -conveniently- ignored where I pointed out that this isn't the only time Eaves drew up painfully anachronistic designs. He did so for ENT, he has since done so with the Leondegrance, to name a couple of examples. You may not like that they don't fit the narrative you seem to want to cling to, but such is life.

To be fair, there's no evidence that Eaves chose that design for the Leondegrance. For all we know somebody else made that award and just used his design without a second thought.

I got that, but apparently, on this particular occasion, Eaves started with a specific TOS design philosophy and it was rejected by Fuller.
So Eaves went back to his usual flair and Fuller approved some of it.

I think people need to understand the production side process of how designs are approved. I agree that some of Eaves work is a bit too generic in terms of swapping from era to era, but like…he’s being tasked to design what a show runner and EPs want. Thats the name of the game. When you can get something through that is something that you like and you wanted in the show, thats a bonus. Just like the changes in the design from his concept to the production model of the SNW Enterprise. He had straight pylons. Someone somewhere in the production side liked the TMP style swept back pylons, and that’s that.

I understand fully the production design process, and am someone who generally hungers for concept art, but there's a point where you simply don't get to make excuses for the absurd. The Enterprise nacelle pylons are unfortunate but not egregious, afaic. Leondegrance is a different matter entirely, as are a number of Eaves' other personal choices.

Like I said, both Eaves and Fuller have their fingerprints all over the mess that was DIS. I'm certainly not about to assign blame to just one of them.

The Intrepid is indeed another update of another one of my ship designs, in the case - the Wasp.

Wasp was my favorite fan-designed ship back in the 80s.

I'm sure someday some fan will edit all of Discovery scenes with more "era appropriate" designs and thus we will know...

They should start by replacing all of the Excelsiors, Mirandas and Oberths in the Berman era first.

They should start by replacing all of the Excelsiors, Mirandas and Oberths in the Berman era first.

Along with Spacedock, Regula One, the Klingon Birds of Prey, and the K’T’ingas. But that didn’t happen in TNG-R and it’s doubtful it would happen if DS9 ever got the HD treatment.

Those are considered more acceptable because....

Those models were used out of necessity, not because they actually wanted to use them. In almost every instance, the Excelsiors, Mirandas and Oberths were supposed to be different ships entirely, but with budget limitations at the time, that was the best they could do. That’s why the same alien ship model was reused for 20 different alien races even though it made no logical sense to do so. Of course, I’m sure most of the viewing audience didn’t care about any of that.

That Inquiry class starship is really beautiful. It is something new to the design with really unique deflector dish.

It would be nice that they show us Inquiry class starship in season 3 but with lot of details. In season 1 it was really bad with no details. Unifinished job. Not to forget it's the most powerful ship that Starfleet put in service til 25th century. I'm really impressed with it.

Agreed. Beautiful ship. The Constitution-III has just beat it out.

I guess due to my growing up with TOS, my preferred preference will always be with starships that have round primary hulls rather than overtly oblong or oval.

The Enterprise-D is probably the only one that is an exception for me.

I use to until I studied spaceship designs and discovered all the grim realities of those.

Then I was less enamored.
