I mean Kirk also orders the Enterprise astern at impulse here too, sending the ship in reverse:

Hasn't the dish always been a big sensor? Lots of ships don't have dishes but they must still have navigational deflectors - it's just some Starfleet ships have the super duper Swiss Army knife dish that does everything.

IRL I think it's a nod to the Federation class dreadnought.

I also don’t think you know what retcon means. You can’t retcon something that doesn’t have lore in the first place. What he says is the only lore we have.

Yes it was the main sensor dish in Tos, but as have been said lots, TOS cannon is a bit loosy goosey. So Tng takes over, and since 86, its been the main deflector dish, as said in multiple episodes. Now there are sensor strips/pits like Voyager has all around it. But this looks exactly like a navigational deflector, they could have added a greeble pit ala voyager instead of something that looks like a deflector.

Yes it was the main sensor dish in Tos, but as have been said lots, TOS cannon is a bit loosy goosey. So Tng takes over, and since 86, its been the main deflector dish, as said in multiple episodes. Now there are sensor strips/pits like Voyager has all around it. But this looks exactly like a navigational deflector, they could have added a greeble pit ala voyager instead of something that looks like a deflector.

According to the TNG tech manual the Long Range Sensor Array was a key element of the navigational deflector. It's probably that part just without the deflector.

Dave owns the TNG tech manual so I wouldn't be surprised if parts of it were used. I know some of the diagrams were used.

Yep, and I think he did the same thing, going in reverse, trying to get away from the Romulans' plasma weapon in "Balance of Terror".

StarFleet likes having the Dish do many tasks.
Deflector Dishes pull multi-role duties:
- Navigational Deflector
- Long Range Scanner
- Energy Emitter (When Jerry Rigged or MacGyvered)
- Primary Defensive Shield Bubble Emitter

In space, having more than one Deflector Dish makes sense, especially given how versatile it is and having "Backups" of critical systems when you're alone, out there in the void of space.

Those sensor strips / pits are short to medium range sensors that cover angles that that aren't covered by the main deflector dish.
