Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I really wanna see some more on that fat Excelsior! I noticed in the episode that it had more of the TUC wider, chunky-secondary hull from the front and not the slimmer look the DS9 cg models had. I was hoping that it was an Obena class but having it be an extra fat Excelsior class is even better! Excelsiors look best when there is some junk in the trunk.

Huh.. Some I like..
I dont like the beefed up long neck.. Thats just ugly..
Is that a gird in top by the crystal? :ack:
Saucer is good.. Dont like the nacelles..
.. Good in profile but meh on side view

Grid? More like a grate, if that is the term you are looking for?:vulcan:

The side view accentuates the sloped up back which I find an odd choice for how long that undercut is. Strikes me as a less efficient use of space? At least in the comics, with the original Excelsior, it could be used as a mooring point for larger ships.
Yeah, I don't like how they bend backwards and then forwards again.
The angles are very strange. Lookin at it from different, um, angles, isn't helping matters.

I was originally thinking of the Obena as a beefed up Excelsior, but now I realize that it's really a lite Excelsior-II.

I bet Exclesior-II has a huge turbolift funhouse in the non-windowed section of the neck. I have no complaints on this design other than maybe the nacelles. The shape I love, especially from above, but the arrangement of the grills and collectors and whatnot leaves something to be desired.

Which is ironic for me because the DSC Gagarin and its Shepard-class were one of the few starships in DSC's 23rd century setting I genuinely liked.

From the side, that Excelsior looks like a chonky girl with that neck! Think they need to reduce it a bit, otherwise it looks pretty good. Close to the Obena class from Lower Decks.

I thought it was an Obena Class from LD. Would have been cool to see it or a California Class from Lower Decks make the jump to Live Action.

I generally like all the ships we get. Or rather, I rarely really dislike designs. I'm behind this batch, and actually have a new appreciation for the Inquiry class now that I see it alongside ships that aren't clones. The design fits quite well in this era.

The only one I gave a little side eye to is the Ross class from STO. Not a fan of the choices there, and the design feels very 'video game-y'. I like the idea of a newer Galaxy class, but this didn't really feel like new. Just a much less pretty update.

I think the whole STO fleet is ugly. But, I watch Trek for the characters and situations. The Defiant didn't look like a Trek ship to me, since it had no nacelles. Voyager had ugly little atrophied nacelles. It won't affect my enjoyment of the show one bit.
