The Excelsior in TNG broke my suspension of disbelief.

The M1911A1 .45 ACP pistol was in service to the United States Armed Forces for around 80 years until it was succeeded by the Baretta M92S during Gulf War I. The Baretta really didn't cut it on multiple fronts, but they did it anyway and it only saw about 30 years of service. Now they're upgrading to the arguably superior SIG Saur's in some places, which is a good choice. You don't replace what could be considered a perfect design unless you have something really kick-ass to do so.
Why no mention of the copious amounts of Mirandas and Oberths flying about, hmm? They're actually older than the Excelsior's by at least a generation, and yet it's the Excelsior that specifically gets no love.
As for shuttles, Prodigy proved that they have the tech to fabricate a shuttle in a ship's hangar at off-hours, so long as they have the matter stores to "print" it. Which means they can use any freakin' design they want - Disco shuttles, Galileo's, etc., etc. The vehicles themselves are not a hundred years+ old, only the design, which can easily be programmed to hold more modern tech, just with a classic skin at the whim of the requestor. BTW, I'm sure they can do that with the bigger ships as well with their shipyard industrial replicators. To think that these are all the same exact Excelsiors without any kind of upgrades is patently absurd and, frankly, an indefensibly specious argument.

By the way, those are all broad generalizations but I doubt there is much care to actually know the truth. So, I shall remain a joyless fake fan.
I still don't get how the "first ship of the class" doesn't have the same name as the class, or visa versa. Also why it isn't an NX-....

The Excelsior moved from NX to NCC, so presumably the NX is maintained until the Class enters series production.
The Excelsior and Miranda classes certainly lasted a long time.
The first ship of a class doesn't always have to bear the name of the class. Was it canonically established that there was a USS Galaxy? Wasn't the Enterprise-E the first Sovereign class? As for the NX registry, that's only for the testing phase. When they get put in service, it switches to NCC.
For someone who can put up with Starfleets first ever mutineer riding around in a turbolift fun house that's saying something.
Maybe it was gonna be the Sagan but was renamed for Rios. Although it then makes it a mad coincidence that it also had 4 nacelles
I was very impressed by the production design of the new Stargazer. This looks and feels like good old Trek, perfectly transported into the 25th century. Now, I want a Stargazer Show with Rios and his crew.
The bridge is sleek, modern, filled with a wonderful evolution of good old LCARS and I also liked the corridors and the observation lounge. So much attention to detail... just wow. Cheers to the production team. Now, get me a Stargazer Series.

This is entirely possible, actually, and not without precedence. They renamed the Sao Paolo to the Defiant for Sisko. The Stargazer may very well be the Sagan renamed.
