Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Did he kill your dog? I can't understand all the hate?
What hate? Couldn’t care less if it was Eaves or Probert or Shmobert. I couldn’t name off the top of my head who designed which ships. I do know that this new ship sucks. And Discovery ships, which is hard to imagine, are better. Have no idea who designed Discovery ships. If it’s the same guy, then something is definitely wrong with this picture. Wonder if in a while we’ll get news article that said they had to rush production and copy pasted one design. Maybe we’ll find out we meant to see like 10 new ones. We’ll see.

I'm really not getting your point. But it's ok.

My point was that there are many, many talented fans out there that could design better quality ship designs than the people CBS has chosen to pay to do that. Then the conversation snowballed from there.

Cool new starship. I like it.

Then again, I don't really care that much for the ships, since Star Trek is about characters and stories. Not starships and future tech.......

Yeah, I just signed my own death warrant didn't I?

What I don't get is, how can getting top quality CGI ships be so "expensive", when people who post here in our Art forum can do such amazing work at home. Somebody's getting ripped off if they're paying millions of dollars for what we've seen so far.

Ok. Well, I like the new ships and I like the DSC ships. I have no issue with them all being the same or whatever.

Obviously, mileage will vary.

My thoughts on the Klingon ships are well known (sorted now we will be getting recignisable D7's) but I had absolutely no problem with the Starfleet ships at all

Same with the Discovery and the Enterprise.

I must be super easy to please because I have no issue with the Klingon designs, aside from the fact that they are ugly. But, I'm not a Klingon :D

Bit too generic for me but they worked as an example of purely house ships whose designs diverged when they all went their separate ways.

Then they tried to pass them off as D7's and I was having none of it.

I don't know why some people think that the Zheng He type are ugly starships. I myself think they are beautiful starships.
Two type of starships that the Zheng He type is base off, are USS Wounded Knee and a early concept art by John Eaves.
Both were talk about on Trek bbs in the past.

If we're talking about Federation starships, same guy, Eaves. Designing ugly Starfleet ships with no common design language all his life.

Don't think so, no deflector dish on any of them.

And I don’t think you’re right. The time and budget allowed, and yes even will, would stymie any artist.

Chabon’s priority this season has been story. He doesn’t care so much about ships, and I don’t know that the others do much either. Maybe what we get in result is a fleet designed by STO game designers working the Big Business that is Gaming media tie-in.

It would be the cheapest option, we will have to wait for details on the ships we saw.

From what I’ve seen it’s very hard for fans to design starships where you can’t immediately laser in on one or two definite inspirations. Sometimes a design will look like a chimera, a cross between one class and another, other times it’s about full-fledged component reuse even though production designers had long since abandoned the early FJ/kitbashing approach: they’d try to make every design look custom-built but also clearly Starfleet and belonging to a particular era. That’s why the NX-01 “Akiraprise” looked jarring: we’d gotten used to actual architecture in prominent ship designs such as the Enterprise-E, the Defiant, Voyager. Component reuse and kitbashing had come to indicate a low budget or little time.

Well, then get him back onto whatever he was smoking for Discovery designs, because whatever he switched to for Picard, ain't working ;)

Whatever Eaves submitted back in the day would’ve been commented upon by Herman Zimmerman and Rick Berman until everyone was happy, so it’s also about those in charge and what they want to see in relation to other shows. This is just the result of a different collaboration.

I don’t know if they’re designs from the game, but they look like they’re easily incorporated into it. Like it’s uniforms were incorporated into the series.

I don’t know that o like most fans’ designs, but the talent and artistry is there, and they do it for fun in their off time.
