Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Here’s a fan work/production(?) I like. And the E-C by Probert is astonishing too. A few of those (older) ships could have been sprinkled in maybe.
Any ship from the early TNG era too (Galaxy, Nebula), mid-era (Intrepid, Defiant), and late-era (Sovereign, Prometheus).

Chabon’s priority this season has been story. He doesn’t care so much about ships ...
You sure about that? For a guy who supposedly doesn‘t care about ships he‘s putting an awful lot of them into the final episode. Kinda wish they went for a one-on-one ship fight in the end.

The Saber is one of those that I cannot stand. It sits right beside the Defiant and the Norway class as designs that I go "What in the wide world of sports were they thinking?"

Galaxy I am completely meh on. Can't stand the clunker.

Nebula is alright.

I think what @Arpy meant was that Chabon doesn’t seem to care what the ships look like, not that he didn’t care about having them in the show.

This is going from his Instagram Q&A’s. He put an interesting scenario into his one big ship standoff in one episode, but, on the design of the ships, he refers us to others.

I've sort of had to love the Saber-class since the ship features in some of my fanfic over the years. I don't really like the design but I feel warmer towards it now than I did when it was new or recent.

I tried like hell when I did an RPG based on that ship, but looking at the shots Arpy linked to its just...no.

Its scorpion shape perturbs me, and I’m not sure about the integrated Bussards, but it’s certainly cuter than Stramrunner and Norway from that batch.

It's hard to believe it's just 5 meters shorter than the NX-class starships of more than 200 years earlier.

Interestingly, although you wouldn’t know it from just seeing it in FC or DS9, but Alex Jaeger once said that the Saber is actually the same size as a Galaxy class saucer, and the ‘official’ size for it is wrong.

Well, yes. It suck. But maybe, in universe explanation is because "Utopia Planetary Shipyard" in Mars has been destroyed for more than 14 years, and they still burning. So Federation lost their capability to build a pretty ships, like in DS9 Berman era. Ships like Galaxy Class become very important, and rare, because they can't build it anymore. Not, without Utopia Planetary Shipyard.

Problem that that line of thought is that most of the Berman era ships were not built at Utopia. Nebula class ships like the Phoenix were built at 40 Eridani A, the Prometheus class were built at Beta Antares. Earth still had Tranquility base, San Francisco and McKinley.

sure it's a justification, but it's a really, really weak one.
