Kitbashing came from the TNG days where it was all model work and they didn’t have the money to make a new one each week. With CGI that shouldn’t be much of a issue, especially with them constantly boasting how expensive these shows are.

Remember that variant of the Constitution-class we saw as a model in Season 1 or 2 of TNG where the warp nacelles were glued on sideways and there was a cutout in the rim of the saucer section to create what may have been another shuttle bay or cargo bay? Maybe this is the Sovereign-class version of that variant.

There are kitbashed CGI ships. Some are okay, like the Zimmerman, and some are trash, like Mudd's ship in that short ST episode.

I have heard that they are spending a lot of money on Picard. It doesn't feel like it to me.

Though it would be fantastic, I am not expecting to see Starfleet ships in the finale.

The show doesn't focus on Starfleet, so they probably didn't think they'd to spend time on Starfleet ships.

I imagine if the next season(s) have more focus on Starfleet we'll get new designs.

Or hell we might seem some in the next 2 episodes.

Sets. Costumes. Props. Cast and crew. The usual.

The show doesn't focus on Starfleet, so they probably didn't think they'd to spend time on Starfleet ships.

While I'm happy to have seen the tugs, the idea that Chabon already had a class name in mind for the ibn Majid-type heavy cruisers implies that someone actually made a design for the ship above and beyond that silhouette, so hopefully we'll see some Curiosity class ships in the next two episodes.

...Have we ever seen a "capital ship" in Star Trek?

The usual designations casually mentioned include cruiser and frigate (plus the odd destroyer) in the known non-capital range, explorer in the utterly fictional range, and things like science vessel and flagship in the dunno-what-they-mean-in-context range. Real-world capital ships today and yesterday are heavy hitters above and beyond the heavy cruiser - that is, battleships or battlecruisers - or carriers. The definition in the fictional future might change radically, but I'd expect such developments to utterly antiquate, say, the cruiser designation as collateral...

I guess a "fleet" would be our best chance at seeing a capital ship - and a "squadron" an unlikely chance.

It could just be a mistake with the wording, or they could mean a large carrier plus its squadron of fighters.

She may have said it to confuse anyone listening in to the conversation about the true strength of the force she is sending.

A group of Defiant class ships could be considered a squadron, its a bit of a stretch but it could work.

A gaggle of destroyers would be a squadron all right - "squadronship" is the direct translation of the Russian word for that ship type, even. But such squadrons existed for overwhelming capital ships with numbers; today, gaggles of missile boats would meet that demand. Picard isn't in need of assets that would swarm over enemy juggernauts, as far as he knows...

We know that "fleet" would be incorrect in the Starfleet usage, though: it refers to the massive formations that feature many hundreds of ships, and Picard won't be getting one of those (they might not even exist in peacetime). We have heard of "task forces" that might be appropriate here. But "squadron" might be a smaller contingent, or then a standing force without a specific or ad hoc task, convertible into a task force if need be.

Yes, I thought that as well. Starfleet used to be derived more from Navy/Coast Guard pedigree. It’s the Air Force that uses “Squadrons”. Maybe this is another one of those new “Space Force” derivatives, which emerged out of the USAF.

'Squadron' is a perfectly fine naval term. It is a group of ships smaller than a fleet.
