Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Got to say, I'm just not feeling the outrage over the G.

I'd have been perfectly happy if it remained the Titan, but I'm not taking any moral offense over renaming it.

Maybe I'm just growing old and apathetic.
I wouldn't be a fan but compared to the fact that this is supposed to be the same old Titan but got a refit to look nothing like the old one and is the same Titan but also "A" is far more stupid.
It's also been a season of nonsense nostalgia anyway so no surprise there.

After watching the episode, I felt mild annoyance that the Titan was renamed the G, but it wasn’t like the pure vitriol I felt at the end of TATV. It was…ok. Odd, but ok.

Now with that said, I’m still kind of flustered at some of the choices that were made starship-wise. Retconning aside, ‘Frontier Day’ is supposed to be the celebration of the launch of the NX-01 Enterprise. Yet not only is the NX-01 stuck at the museum and not actually part of the celebration, but the current ship to hold the name Enterprise is being decommissioned after only 15 years of service, for no reason that was ever stated in the show. It’s not like it had anything to do with the Changelings’ grand plan. And apparently there were no plans to make an Ent-G until the events of the season warranted it, from a completely different ship, no less. None of this makes a whole lot of sense to me. It strikes me as something that wasn’t completely thought through, or at
best changed around at the last minute due to retcons.

(And I’m not going to get into the whole ‘Titan-A refit-from-Luna-Titan-but-not-really’ thing, or why the Titan-A’s class is ‘Constitution III’ when it should be more like ‘Shangri-La II.’)

And the Enterprise-E? What was up with that casual brush-aside? I heard that Matalas just didn’t like it. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but if he did hate it that much, why didn’t he just have the E be the one getting decommissioned, then controlled by the Borg kids, and then get destroyed in the process?

And why feature the STO Enterprise-F at all? Despite using some video game designs as background ships, it’s not like they were beholden to use it. As someone mentioned above, they just didn’t care all that much, because the apparent goal this whole time was to make a ship that was already meant to be Riker’s old Titan from Nemesis into the new Enterprise, in the most convoluted way possible.

But it is what it is. It’s not the way I would have done things, but it’s over and done with. Here’s looking forward to the next showrunner and their take on the Enterprise-H.

The E-E thing is a running joke. STO never said what happened to it either.

my hope is a Worf movie that addresses it
Ya I think there are a fair few jokes and references go over the heads of people like myself who didn't engage with the novels and games post Bermantrek.

Yeah, I did a bit. OTOH, intentional or not, when the D leaves the Museum the only other ship on screen is the NX-01. I thought that was an OK nod.

I DID want Riker to say "It was a long road getting from there to here." Of course I also wanted him to say "Warp factor 5 6 7 8..."
I was mostly disappointed that when Shelby was talking about how Starfleet got from there to here she made no reference to the life cycle of a gazelle.

Or Riker could have really trolled people by turning to Troi and reminiscing about how they used to play NX-01 sims on the holodeck.

They did a chef gag!

That guy was definitely a changeling. He definitely was not a chef.

I've worked with enough chefs to know they would have went head first into that fleet with nothing but a spacesuit, a phaser and a bag of coke. Half of them wouldn't even wait for the phaser or spacesuit.

There are too many fans getting all worked up about friggin starships and NOT realising Star Trek....

Was...

Never...

About....

Spaceships!!!!

You just made that a priority.

As I mentioned, it wasn’t so much the naming itself that was problematic. It was the needlessly convoluted way in which it was done, both for the Titan and for the Enterprise.
