Stargazer style Robau series....

The movie's mum either way (though if she's in Starfleet you'd think they could come up with a more exotic assignment to explain her absence from the farm than Africa!), while I believe that she's almost certainly not in Starfleet in the various novels.
She could have resigned after her husband's death, which would work for the purpose of the novels.

Why couldn't there be Starfleet officers in Africa? There are Starfleet officers serving in North America and Europe, so why not other continents? There could be research facilities, recruitment centers, etc. on any continent of Earth. (Well, not so much with the recruitment centers where Antarctica is concerned, unless global warming had much more impact on future Earth than it appears.)

Hey, penguins are people too! >:(

If they're good enough for the Doctor, they're good enough for Starfleet!

There could be, but I'd also expect that if they had a home elsewhere on Earth, they'd be commuting from there instead of moving wholesale (and leaving the kids behind). Whereas I can more easily justify a private concern not being able to afford the transporter time for such.

How about the Nalori? It's been mentioned several times they "clashed" with the Federation in some undefined manner, and this has to have happened prior to Vanguard.

Any idea how those look like?

Black skin, black teeth, black eyes (almond shaped if I recall correctly), purple hair (often braided), ritual scarring in males.

FWIW, my main captain in STO is a Nalori.

Wait a minute, wait a minute. I just realized something. Where's this "Africa" thing coming from? There's no mention of Africa anywhere in the film. Here's the transcript:

Kirk's stepfather's line is:
That car's an antique. You think you can get away with this just 'cause your mother's off-planet?

I kinda suspect the Kelvin is a take on the Starfleet "Destroyer" design seen in the old Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph.

^Google "Saladin class destroyer". It's a kitbash of a TOS Enterprise model - a saucer, connecting dorsal and single nacelle underneath. Although the components are roughly the same (minus the Kelvin's engineering hull/shuttlebay on top), the proportions on the Kelvin are vastly different, and it's much larger.

As for class and funtion, the official STXI website says the Kelvin is "primarily used as a survey vessel"
