Stargate Universe Weapons Recommendations!

Well now we know. They have a basic load of ammo, that's it. Should another Corporal empty a clip at an insect cloud they are screwed. No more automatic weapons fire, single shots and those shots will be more precious then when a Chosen Man of Sharpe's Royal Green Jackets shoot.

Until Eli engineers a energy weapon or Destiny's armory is found to beat of the aliens in the season 2 cliffhanger resolution we have Sgt Greer's Alien inspired flamethower. Maybe someone saw a replay of V: The Final Battle and the mercenarries crossbow will make an appearance. Swords, fighting knives and batons will be the weapon of first contact, should they fail then you use your emergency bullet.

Why though would this ship have weapons on board. If it is an automated ship meant to deliver Stargates to far away planets, unmanned in its intent, why would it have weapons on board? What if some alien race had found the ship and got ahold of advanced weapons, surely the Ancients wouldn't be THAT stupid.
Remember, the story will involve TWO ships. The first is an unmanned vessel that will "seed" the galaxies it passes through with stargates, and possibly human populations. The Destiny is the second ship, made to follow the course of the first one and investigate all those strange new worlds.

You mean humanoid, not humans. Remember that human are the second evolution of Ancients so they would only exist were Ancients have been before.

So, with a new Stargate show on the horizon, we're given an opportunity to see a shakeup of the props our heores use to mow down legions of bad guys.

Most will remember the year that SG-1 transitioned from the H&K MP5 to the ubiquitous FN P-90, a wicked-cool gun that Stargate has helped become a standard "futuristic looking gun" in many recent SF shows. Arguably, it's become a little overused, and many hard military fans have questioned the use of the P-90 in the first place. Sometimes we see the more suitable G36 assault rifle, but the Stargate universe hasn't had a real switch in weapons in eight years.

So, assuming we are NOT going with some fancy new ray guns for Universe as the main weapons, and assuming the show WANTS to have something to replace the P-90, what should our new team of heroes be (dual) wielding while they explore all those strange newer worlds?

Here's hoping that Universe WILL care a little bit about its weapons. SG-1 was the apple of the USAF's eye for years, and was one of the best examples of military weapons and equipment in any fictional TV show. Atlantis has been pretty lax about this for the most part, and I hope that Universe will signal a return to the more military style show that sold the franchise's popularity to me in 1997.

PS - What we know of the show's premise suggests that the team on Universe will not necessarily have the means to craft new ammunition along with them. Short of some miraculous replicator technology that will magically make bullets, I hope they take this into account before giving us new ray guns. :)

Were I the armory specialst for the new show, id select H&K Ump's for standard issue weaponry.
.45 cal , big enough of a round to assuredly stop a man ( or slow down a regenerating alien).

Full/Semi Auto selectability ( although no real field personnel will ever use full auto like SG1 did)

And like the P90, it doesn't look so lethal that less advanced societies assume youre up to no good. And the .45 cal round is more plentiful than the P90's 5X7mm round.

Not all rounds are equal or for the same purpose. With a pistol round like the .45 (5.7x28mm is more a small rifle round), you have more stopping power, but that big blunt bullet kills the velocity, range, and you're not going to have any penetration. Case in point a decent vest will stop a .45. The 5.7mm round was actually banned in the U.S. because it went right through them.

I'm surprised they haven't made their guns little coil/rail guns. Ammunition could be manufactured basically anywhere, and have higher penetrating power in a smaller package...

I was wondering about that too. It would make sense since they have compact power sources available for use and making just projectiles would be much easier then manufacutring cordite.

It would also be, practically speaking, easy to build props and do SFX for. No big beams required, they could basically use air guns that shoot rapid little puffs and add some magnetic, pulse-rifle style sound when they fire.
