There's sort of a thread on one of these episodes already, but I'd thought we'd have a semi official thread until the officially air anyway.
So... skipping 19 as yet another gimmick episode, I'm curious to see what people thought of 20?
In the end, we get another pointless battle over Earth... with the idea that this was a game changer for the series. Now, assuming that S6 would have been made, I suppose they could have done several Earth/Milky Way-based episodes before finding a reason to go back to the Pegasus... and that might have been enough to make the series fresh and interesting for a year. But would it have been worth it? It's clear that they did those gimmicky bottle episodes to pave the way for this one (and the money shot in 5x19), but we know nothing major will come out of a battle over Earth orbit.
What was exciting back when Anubus tried to invade Earth has been rendered meaningless by Ba'al, the Replicators and the Ori. I know that Earth won't be destroyed and I know that they'll find a way to keep it secret. I guess no one in the SG universe has a telescope or even a pair of strong binoculars.
I suppose you could say that destroying all their magic tech in Area 51 and the chair was enough of a consequence, but given how technology just appears when required on this show, I just don't think that's enough of a game-changer to warrant doing an Earth invasion episode.
Now that SGU is basically a starship show, they've basically run away from making the program public on Earth for the foreseeable future. I just think this was a missed opportunity... In fact, given that they knew that this would have been the series finale, I think they should have found a way to reshoot the ending to make it so that everyone can see Atlantis landing near San Francisco.
Oh well... it's been an interesting ride and while I've mostly been down on the show ever since the end of S1, there's still a small part of me that's sad to see it go.
Side note - Kavanaugh is back again. I'm so glad that they've pretty much gone back and "un-asshole-ified" all the minor characters they ruined in S1. Those characters were always meant to look bad in order to make Our Heroes (tm of Temis) look good, so I'm glad they've at least gone back and tried to fix those mistakes.
