Starfleet Recruitment

Marie Nomad

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
How does Starfleet recruit potential cadets? I saw stuff like booths but are there any other ways? Like through family members?

Dad could be a powerful recruiting tool if he was in SF: Kirk, Troi, Mariner.
On the other hand, dad could be a powerful influence if he was a tool who hated Starfleet: Spock, Picard,Paris, possibly Torres.
On the other hand, dad could be a powerful influence if he was absent in some way: Kirk, Riker, Data, Worf.

Same way any military does. If Spock's words to Uhura in "Children of the Comet" are any indication, they have no shortage of applicants.

TNG season 1 makes it look like getting into Starfleet Academy is EXTREMELY hard. Wesley is among a handful of potential candidates going through the Starfleet version of the MCAT.

But then there's Nog in DS9. He's got a criminal record, not a citizen, and Jake has to teach him how to read English and he basically gets in because Captain Sisko writes him a letter (although, to be fair and not sarcastic, DS9 does show him putting in work before going to the Academy).

One of the things I wondered was would it be in keeping with the ideas and depiction of the Federation to do something like a draft during a crisis like the Dominion War? When Vreenak meets with Sisko during "In the Pale Moonlight," he mentions that Starfleet is having a "manpower shortage."

Would Starfleet resort to conscription if it had to?

Depends on the plot.

I think that was just for that sector/section and it was mid-term. Barclay would have failed it miserably.

Subspace recruitment signals, using the voice of the guy who did TNG trailers for upcoming episodes.

(TNG trailer guy voice)
"On the edge of the final frontier... one organization dares to brave the unknown.

Who will heed the call?

Who will become part of this group?

Who will lay the path for those that come afterward?

Find out, by becoming...

STAAAAAAAARFLEET'S
NEXT GENERATION!"

Looks like the requirement standards change for different eras. Makes sense.

patriotism. the ideal for the UFP seems pretty strong among many.
and for the scientifically minded the chance to be at the forefront of exploration.
I could imagine documentaries, embedded journalists and just the legendary status of some starfleet officers being a draw in and of itself.

and for some a chance at redemption

Would they ever need to? They already had a worker class of bootleg Data's (F-8) in Picard's first season, the EMH mark 1's in Voyager and the Exocomps in Lower Decks to do the dirty work.

I mean, the Bootleg Data's rose up and destroyed Mars, but that was external tinkering not actual rebellion.

Perhaps they were a bit more lenient on the first Ferengi to join Starfleet.

Crewman Celes (VOY), who was at Starfleet Academy (but not for officer training apparently or she dropped out of that) who struggles to keep up in her job, said something similar: 'The Federation was so eager to have Bajorans in Starfleet that my instructors gave me the benefit of the doubt.' Though that could also be her low self-esteem talking.

At bar fights.

Picard was already in Starfleet academy when he got into a bar fight and got stabbed. (Tapestry)
He just doesn't seem to learn.
Recruited in a bar fight, as you suggest and then before gratuation gets into yet another bar fight.
Oh Jean-Luc, you bar fighting scoundrel.

I was talking about Kirk. Literally recruited after a bar fight.

Boimler has a Starfleet recruiting poster in his quarters. Featuring Una. :techman:

Sarek didn't hate Starfleet, as such. He was just opposed to Spock, specifically, joining it.

Maurice Picard also has never expressed anti-Starfleet opinions. He was just old-school in the way he ran his vineyard. Hell, in one of the novels, Maurice himself actually tries to enlist! His application is rejected, and he keeps it a secret for the rest of his life; he never tells his wife or his sons that he ever tried to apply. Jean-Luc only finds out much later, after his father's death.

And Paris? Are you kidding me? The Parises are a HUGE Starfleet family. Hell, Tom's father (who I assume is who you were referring to) was a senior admiral!

And Torres? We know absolutely nothing about B'Elanna's father other than 1) his name and 2) he walked out on the family. He never expressed ANY opinion (pro or con) regarding Starfleet.
