Starfleet Academy Tie-Ins

Now that we have the first two episodes of Starfleet Academy, I was wondering if anyone has any idea when we can expect the first books and comics? I was a little surprised we haven't heard anything about our first tie-ins since they seem to usually try to have them out fairly soon after the first season starts.

After seeing the first two episodes I really want to revisit those Marvel comics with Nog and friends.

I'm not sure if the show's going to end up situational or serialised, if it's the former they can have infinite adventures around the episodes. If it's the latter, it'll be a bit more complicated, and perhaps lead to prequels like Discovery had at the start.

I reread them a year or two ago, and I liked them a lot more than I did at the time. I'm not saying they were great or what I really wanted out of a Star Trek comic, but I enjoyed them. I didn't make the connection at the time, but they're basically a mid-90s X-Men spin-off comic -- think Generation X -- wearing Star Trek clothes. And while it was nice to have Pava in Titan, it's T'Priell and Edam Astrun I'd rather have seen more of.

My guess is we’ll probably see a novel on the schedule in time for the back end of the year, the September to December period - SNW also had its first tie-in come after the full first season had aired (SNW started in May 2022, The High Country was published in February 2023). Considering the current publishing schedule, that seems to be how things shake out.

It does kinda suck that, while we have more Trek than ever, the novels have ended up slowing down so much compared to their heyday, but… Well, my wallet won’t complain about the slowdown, at the least.

Pretty sure IDW will have something, they do everything :D
No disrespect meant to the novelists, they are writing what Gallery will commission, but sometimes it feels to me like IDW is the bleeding edge and flame keeper of Trek literature. They just announced their 60th-anniversary special this week and hinted at aggressive plans for this year. Gallery, by contrast, seems to be lost out in the woods somewhere.

Part of that is turnaround time. Comics get churned out on a monthly schedule, while it can take up to a year to get a novel from pitch to shelf. But you're right that Star Trek has, apparently, become less and less of a priority for Gallery with each passing year. The promotion of managing editor Ed Schlesinger and the death of acquiring editor Margaret Clark certainly didn't help matters, either.

I know this is a gross exaggeration and completely inaccurate, but it's really beginning to feel like Coda was the end of Trek novels altogether. Hell, 2021 was the last year we got more than a small handful of Trek novels.

Should a mod merge these threads together?

That thread discusses how things established in the Academy series either meshes with or contradicts things from the novels and other tie-ins. This thread is asking if there will be novels or tie-ins for Academy. They're two different topics.

Wait, this happened, and no one posted about it here to let us know the deets? What are we paying you guys for?!

(.... I'm being told no one is getting paid. OK, carry on, then, I guess.)

No, @The Wormhole is right, they are different topics.

It’s been a while since I was hip to the IDW comic scene but I’d be pretty shocked if there isn’t a “countdown” comic.

When the new Star Wars movies were coming out, I know that a lot of the big questions (i.e. who is Snoke, Knights of Ren, etc) were only answered in comics and books. I really hope they don’t do that for this show regarding what all has changed in the Trek universe.

Also, if I were John Paramount I think I’d immediately order a book showing Holly Hunter’s initial time as Captain.
