Spoilers Starfleet Academy: First-Year Review 🎓

Capt. James T(roll) Kirk

Now that the first season has come and gone, what are your overall thoughts about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

What do you think of the characters and their performers?

What were standout episodes, moments or scenes in season one?

Are you considering yourself a fan of the show? And where do you rank it with the other Trek series?

What do you want to see more / less of in season two?

Sorry for the long-ish post, but I guess I had some things to say about the show. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on it so far. :)

What are your overall thoughts about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?
I remember being very skeptical about the premise of a show set in Discovery’s 32nd century when we first heard about Starfleet Academy almost exactly three years ago. I just didn’t feel confident that they would be able to make the far-future setting interesting and my biggest fear was that this would be Discovery 2.0, only more cringe. But what can I say, somehow this group of producers and writers has managed to create an instant hit for me. The show isn’t perfect by any means (and really, what is?), but they actually managed to create a world and a cast of characters I care about. Upon seeing the premiere and the second episode, an early reviewer remarked how Starfleet Academy reminds them of the time The Next Generation started and the fictional galaxy felt fresh and full of wonder. That sentiment kinda stuck with me and I’m glad to report that feeling held on for almost all of the episodes for me.

The writing, while — again — certainly not perfect, feels original enough. The show has its own voice and I like the way they’ve set up the season as episodic installments with several character-driven arcs that thankfully all feel like they’ve been planned from day one. I wonder who’s chiefly responsible for introducing this way of writing for this show. Do we have to thank producers Noga Landau and Alex Kurtzman, or was it Gaia Violo that imprinted that kind of storytelling onto the show during development? I just gotta say, after the serialized offerings of both Picard and Discovery, this return to a classic formula is very welcome and often reminds me of what I love about the storytelling style of Strange New Worlds.

What do you think of the characters and their performers?
Overall I think the cast is stellar. Here are some of my thoughts about the various characters and actors:

I had some reservations about Holly Hunter before the show started (mainly because I wasn’t really aware of her previous work and wasn’t blown away by the early previews and trailers), but I’m surprised by how well she works as a character and the show’s adult lead. Hunter somehow manages to convey through her performance how much Ake cares about the cadets and the world around her. And I honestly had no idea how much I needed a Trek captain like her. She has some shades of gray to her character, which only makes her more interesting. I wonder where they plan to take the character in season two. Will there be room to explore the backstory with her son? Will they make more of an effort to give her an active love life?

I continue to be impressed by Sandro Rosta as Caleb. He somehow simultaneously plays the character with youthful naivety and goofy awkwardness and yet also retains an unmistakeable presence as the show’s lead. His arc of coming out of his shell to open up to the galaxy and find a place where he belongs worked exceptionally well for me. In early episodes you’d often hear him make snide remarks about Starfleet ideals and being above needing teachers or friends, but even back then there’s also these moments where he sits to the side, observing his fellow cadets and smiling about their hijinks, and you can see how bit by bit he comes to genuinely wanting to be there. It’s interesting that they already concluded that arc with his mother and Braka, because I would have thought this was something they’d carry over into season two, but now I’m wondering what will be his story going forward.

Bella Shepard as Genesis is probably the strongest performer out of the cadets. I love how they made her a natural leader who makes friends easily and brings people onto her side. However, I feel like they only scratched the surface so far concerning her character and I’m ready for what they want to do with her in year two.

Kerrice Brooks as SAM got better for me as the show went on. After not being a massive fan of “Series Acclimation Mil”, the other SAM-centric episode, “The Life of the Stars”, became my favorite episode of the season. I totally did not see coming that they would address the one aspect of her character I wasn’t a fan of from day one (the no childhood thing). They really made a gamble with the way they portrayed her for the first half of the season, which tells me they trusted that the story would work and pay off later. From what we’ve seen so far in the final two episodes, they really made an effort to write her differently, and for Kerrice to portray her differently. A little more jaded perhaps, but it nicely rounds off her character.

Zoë Steiner as Tarima seems to be an acquired taste, as many seem to have expressed how they consider her the least engaging performer on the show. I definitely recognize an inexperienced, timid quality in her performance, and while that may very well stem from Steiner being young and inexperienced herself, I also think it’s a perfect fit for Tarima as a character. I do think there were some genuinely strong acting moments with her in season one and I’m looking forward to see her mature as an actress. For Tarima I hope that they further explore where she sees herself in Starfleet (or the War College).

I love Jay-Den and Darem as characters (especially when they are together), but I wanna say that Karim Diané and George Hawkins are probably the weakest links among the cadet actors. They aren’t bad per se, but in my mind they both didn't manage to rise above the trappings of their character outlines to deliver performances that felt as powerful as those of the others. However, storywise there’s so much untapped potential for both of them. Why did Jay-Den want to become a healer? Will he ever confront his father? And for Darem I kinda hope that they explore more of his uniqueness as a Khionian. Why does he feel awkward showing his alien appearance? And why would he be the more interesting partner for Jay-Den?

Gina Yashere is, for me, one of this show’s absolute highlights. She’s playing the funniest character and I love the mysteriousness that still surrounds Lura Thok. From the few glimpses we’ve seen here or there I think she has a great potential for emotional and serious scenes, and my hope for season two would be that next to all the quips and jokes they’ll find room to explore that part of her performance. I know the show is not “about” the adult characters, but still I’d love to get an actual Lura Thok centric episode.

Tig Notaro continues to shine as Reno, no surprise there. Besides the deadpan one-liners they’ve also gave us some genuinely good moments of her as a teacher, which I hope they continue to do. That they paired her up with Lura somehow came as a surprise, even though it seems to make a ton of sense.

Robert Picardo thankfully works really well in the show, although I would say he’s underutilized in season one. The scenes we do get with him are great, but like some of the other adult characters he’s been missing for chunks of it.

Oded Fehr and Raoul Bhaneja are wonderful additions to the cast, and my hope for season two would be that they don’t forget about either of them. Especially Kelrec, who’s much more fun and interesting than he appeared to be upon his first appearance.

What were standout episodes, moments or scenes in season one?
Favorite episodes were “Kids These Days” (easily the best, most cinematic premiere of any modern Trek show), “Come Let’s Away”, “The Life of the Stars” and “Rubincon”, which perhaps not coincidentally are more like the key “event” type of episodes. From the more low-key, low-stakes episodes I have a soft spot for “Beta Test” and “Ko'Zeine”.

I appreciate what they wanted to do with “Series Acclimation Mil” and I like that at its core it’s still an SFA episode about SAM and not a weird wannabe episode of Deep Space Nine. And while I loved seeing Cirroc back as Jake the episode ultimately felt like a let-down to me after all the early hype. As much as I love Tawny Newsome, she somehow seemed off as Illa Dax to me, like she wasn’t able to act through all that makeup. I wanted to love this episode, but right now I think the best thing about it is how it set up “The Life of the Stars”.

Off the top of my head, here are my favorite moments and scenes from season one:
  • The Athena first landing in San Francisco with that song playing in “Kids These Days”. People seem to either love or hate that scene, but I honestly thought it was just magical.
  • Reno recognizing that there wasn’t anything wrong with Darem’s PADD and that his parents just weren’t answering in “Vitus Reflex”.
  • Darem helping Jay-Den prepare for the debate event in “Vox in Excelso”. I gotta say, the romantic and homoerotic intensity of that scene hit me by surprise, and I loved it.
  • Jake appearing to SAM at the end of “Series Acclimation Mil”. Great performance by both Cirroc (maybe his best in the role next to his scenes in “The Visitor”) and Kerrice and some intelligent lines of dialog about finding your own way in life.
  • Kelrec shining as a perfectly competent commander in “Come, Let’s Away”.
  • Caleb taking Genesis’ hand when they have to face the music in front of Ake in “Ko’Zeine”.
  • The scene where Genesis takes care of a drunken Tarima in “The Life of the Stars”
  • The Doctor finally revealing why he didn’t let himself get too attached to SAM in “The Life of the Stars”. Heartbreakingly beautiful with a powerful performance by Picardo.
  • SAM being reborn and the sequence of her growing up with the Doctor in “The Life of the Stars”.
  • Ake setting Nus Braka straight on his self-mythology in “Rubincon”. Great moment for both Hunter and Giamatti.

Are you considering yourself a fan of the show? And where do you rank it with the other Trek series?
I suppose by this point it comes as no surprise, but yes, I most certainly call myself a fan of the show. Together with Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, these are the best Trek shows this latest era of the franchise has to offer. I found something to like in both Discovery and Picard as well (mostly the characters), but Lower Decks with its zany look at Trek felt the most unique and fresh, Strange New Worlds is the one that I feel comes closest to classic 90s-era Trek (and I mean that in the most positive way possible) and Starfleet Academy manages to feel new and original (enough). Like LD and SNW, SFA has its own style, its own strengths and its own brand of humor and humanity. The writers clearly have their heart in the right place, and are not cynical about Star Trek and, most importantly, were able to string together ten episodes that all had me entertained, crying, jumping for joy and everything in-between.

I find ranking these shows among the other Trek shows almost impossible, as I can’t very well leave aside my nostalgic feelings for the older ones. But also, the Trek shows I do love I tend to love for different reasons, so it sometimes feels like comparing apples to oranges. I would probably put it something like this, with multiple shows on the same tier:
DS9 >> TNG / TOS >> LD / VOY / SNW / SFA / ENT >> PRO / TAS >> DSC / PIC / VST / SCO

What do you want to see more / less of in season two?
Right now, after just having watched the season one finale, what I’m most hoping for in season two, is that they’ll be able to once more create satisfying arcs for all the characters that unfold in interesting ways throughout the season. What I also hope for is that they’ll be more daring with episodes that attempt to say something a little deeper or even provocative. They sometimes managed to scratch the surface in season one, but most of the time it felt like they preferred to play it safe in terms of any kind of messaging.

I also hope to see more of the Athena, both in terms of wanting to see more unfamiliar places on the ship, and also in terms of wanting to see the ship in action. Most of the sets are gorgeous and I fell in love with the Athena design almost instantly. So more of that, please! For more on what I wish they will do going forward, here’s an entire dedicated Starfleet Academy wishlist.

What I hope to see less of in season two is that the conclusions to episodes don't feel so rushed. Often in season one I felt they were spending the majority of the runtime with a problem/dilemma, only to wrap it up in mere minutes at the end, sometimes even off-screen. They definitely like to maneuver the characters into interesting situations, but then often don’t seem interested in showing how they get out of them. This had the effect of making some of the episodes / storylines feel unfinished.

What I also don’t want to see is an extended storyline about two female characters fighting over the same guy or anything like that. Not necessarily because this stuff doesn’t happen in real life, but more because I think it’s super played out in fiction and it never makes the writing for the female characters look particularly good. I’d rather have them as friends working together.

Somewhere in the middle. There's a lot of potential, but they haven't reached it yet. Like late TOS, early TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT, late Disco :D

I think Season 1 was better than it looked like it was going to be, but I'm still not hooked. I thought Academy has utilized their ensemble better than the other live-action series, especially first season. It still looks great. The cast is fine, for the most part, even though I do have a few quibbles there.

Holly Hunter delivers, though I don't like when Ake is too casual, like when she is not wearing shoes on the bridge or curled up in her command chair like she's reading a book. Giamatti was having so much fun as Braka that he pulled me in. Arguably, he's the best villain of the streaming era, or rather the most lively.

I think Lura Thok overdoes it too much, perhaps for comedic effect, but I wish Gina Yashere approached her role more like Michael Dorn did, which made Worf's humorous asides on Next Generation often work because he looked and sounded so serious even when saying or doing something comedic. Whatever they are doing to make Jay-Den's voice even deeper I wish they would stop because that is distracting. I didn't like Caleb being another wunderkind, but the actor did well with all the things he was given.

I just found the stories, pacing, or something a bit boring. Also, the low stakes nature of a lot of the season should've been refreshing, but that just added to my boredom.

I also found myself more into the lore and worldbuilding than the characters. Has nothing to do with the actors, and the writing isn't that bad, so I'm not sure why I'm not hooked. I do think Academy was better and more consistent than Strange New World's last season. Even though I don't love Academy, I also don't think it deserves all the hate either.

Despite my curiosity about the lore, I also didn't agree with some of it. I really wished the Sisko-focused episode had said Sisko came back and fulfilled his promise. He could've been called away again by the Prophets and that would've been fine so long as he kept his promise, but I really wish they hadn't written it like he never came back. I also was happy to see what was going on with the Klingons in the 32nd century, but I felt their fate was too similar to what befell the Romulans in Picard. I wish thought had been put into evolving their culture. An official adaptation of "Kitumba" could've worked for Academy.

What would I like to see next season?

-Genesis get more attention. I would also like to learn more about her species.
-More Discovery guest roles and cameos.
-More of the adult Athena crew.
-More classic/legacy species like the Tholians and Gorn.
-Bringing back the Emerald Chain and Breen.
-Perhaps an episode with Wesley.

As someone who thought that an Academy-based show would have been perfect during the CW-era, I'm not against the premise. And I think there's something good here that has potential, but the fact that it's structured as two-10 episode seasons and they felt the need to fit in a complete year in those 10 episodes really hurt it.

The characters and their relationships don't really have any time to develop, to the point where they just summarize any character development that would have happened if they had more time, and most of the school stuff was reduced to 21st century tropes like rival frat houses and bar fights.

The cast did grow on me for the most part, but they're sort of mostly just there because there isn't much to do that's uniquely interesting with them. Caleb is the only stand out for me, but as basically the lead of the series, that's fine I suppose. SAM should be the one that changes the most dramatically, but we don't really get a chance to see that because they just skip several months between her single dad home schooled rebirth era and the two part finale.

The DS9 episode really felt the most complete to me, and in a vacuum the finale does as well (if I just accept that it doesn't earn any of the character work that would have come from a much longer season). Most of the other episodes are fine, but just feel unstructured in terms of using their premise or telling fulsome stories. It felt frustrating because the running time is 10-20 minutes longer than other Trek series, but somehow the episodes felt like they did less. But it was never bad like Picard.

My modern rankings I posted in my ep 10 post, but they are:
Prodigy (which I think does this premise better) > Orville > Lower Decks > SNW 1+2 > Discovery 4+5 > Discovery 3 = Academy > SNW 3 > Discovery 2 > Discovery 1 > Picard.

My want for season 2 would be for them to just slow it down rather than try to fit in a second year, but if their plan is to try to do 4 years in 4 seasons, I know that won't happen. My other want would be to just not have a galaxy-wide threat that can only be solved by a group of sophomores instead of officers with years or decades of experience.
They also seemed to tone down the annoying slang dialogue in the final episodes, so I hope that's a consistent tone change and they don't feel the need to have someone say "6-7" or "cringe" next season. 😂

Reno and Vance were two of my favourite characters from DSC and this season really delivered on them. The Doctor felt so natural as well, Robert Picardo hasn't lost a step.

Our newcomers in Ake and Thok have been absolute delights. Thok especially, her absence for half the season was really felt.

The cadets were fine but I don't especially care about any of them, Jay-Den is probably the best of them. A very compelling un-Worfy Klingon. Darem is the handsome one but they undercooked his alien-ness and his arc from douchebag bully to loyal friend was quite rushed. Hopefully next season we learn about the Dar-Sha.

Nus Braka was a great villain, very charismatic and a master of monologues. Anisha is a very weak character without any real substance and I can't see any direction for her to go so I wont lose any sleep if we never see her again.

The show was mostly incredibly strong. Vitus Reflux was let down by it's over-reliance on teen shenanigans and Series Acclamation Mil whilst emotionally very strong indulged too much in its goofiness. Ko'zeine was the low point of the season, it just didn't go anywhere and took too long getting there. It was the type of episode that needed a lot more build up to be earned.

I'm very excited for season 2 and desperately hope it can see its 4 season arc through.

Personally, I found much of the material (and several of the characters) to be intensely annoying.

I only watched the finale yesterday and already the show is fading from memory. It sits beside Picard and Disco as a show that I didn't hate (sometimes, but not the majority of the time) and wanted to enjoy, but in the end it's just there. Some highlights and a lot of lowlights.

As a show for me, it seems likely that it can't get above a certain level simply due to certain choices they have made which are intrinsic to the series' makeup.

Random thought, Karim really sounds like he is struggling to give us full on Michael Dorn Klingon voice, and there have been plenty of Klingons who didn’t do the full Michael Dorn. If I’m hearing a stylistic choice to represent his discomfort with speaking, that’s totally appropriate, but it sounds like he’s straining his chords and it’s slowing down his line delivery.

TLDR;,speak from the diaphragm, not all the way from the testicles!

So, this show feels uniquely just for me. It is something I have wanted for 30 years, as the Academy as a setting is absolutely one that I wanted to see brought to life. So, it doesn't surprise me that I am probably alone in most of them. So, without further ado:

  • The good:
    • The cadets: Caleb and Genesis are probably my personal favorite, but all the cadets are people I find enjoyable. Genesis appeals for living under a long shadow of expectations, and Caleb trying to find his place in the world. SAM was uniquely interesting in terms her purpose, and the efforts to figure out how she is distinct from her mission. It has an element of aristocracy trying to experience another life. It appeals to me on a different level.
    • The officers: the officers all stand out, from Ake, to Thok and even Reno who was extremely annoying in Discovery but presents a much more grounded approach with the cadets. But, the real stand out is the Doctor. The fact that they follow up on one of the most heart wrenching episodes for him and give that a deep resonance within the character is just fantastic. It makes things actually matter, something Voyager struggled with a lot. And Ake is like about 4 of my most recent managers so she definitely worked for me.
    • Nus Braka: excellent villain. Just someone who very much feels like that common clay working might type who stepped in to power and resented those who felt themselves superior to him. His plan is interesting, and takes the technology that the Federation often times takes for granted and twists it to his advantage.
    • Building teamwork through shared hardship: yeah, people didn't like the trauma and therapy. I do. The group therapeutic assignment works for me, knowing what I do of different therapeutic approaches, and actually engaging in group therapy. Having done drama therapy, art therapy, and other approaches it works. Tilly does extremely well.
    • Rivalry: The War College was an unexpected twist but I found it interesting. The pranks, and competitive streak is something Star Trek could benefit from a lot more of.
  • The mid: things that just are not really must interest to me:
    • Relationships: yeah, the romance was a given. I don't care about it one way or the other.
    • Use of Omega-it's just a weird thing. It works well for what it needs to do, I guess. The details on the Burn were more enjoyable but overall just meh.
    • All the legal stuff: I mean, I've done mock trials in school and all but good grief did all the legal stuff just seem repetitive. I think Star Trek really could benefit from a JAG series to iron out actual laws.
  • The bad:
    • Limited classroom time: wouldn't have minded seeing more classes. Similar to the Lower Decks and showing off the common everyday duties I think more classes would have been fun. The theatre class being a standout just shows how much I really would enjoy more.
    • All the Klingon stuff. Jay'den was a unique take, but I could have done without more Klingons.
    • Politics: I get all the different connections, especially with Tarima. Decent world building with Betazed, but I just found the planetary negotiating to be strange with the cadets at times. It wasn't always very enjoyable.

Overall, I am a fan. I think it is very fun, designed to appeal very much to me. It isn't a traditional Star Trek show and I don't want it to be. It is unique and I welcome more of it.

I enjoy it very much so far. It's very good for a first season. Trek traditionally doesn't hit it out of the park in first seasons, the shows are still finding their voice.

I'd rank it above PIC season 1, and Disco season 1. (I think SNW , Lower Decks , and Prodigy smashed it out of the gate from the start). I'd even rank it above SNW s3 , which was hit and miss for me.

It's not flawless. Most of the cast (except for the cadets) just disappear halfway through the season. Where is Lura Thok for most of the second half?

Still, how many shows have episodes as good as 'Series Acclimation Mil ' and 'The Life of the Stars' in their FIRST season? It's a strong first season

Even after all these years, I still wonder where all the intense dislike for PIC season 1 comes from, which in my book is one of the boldest and most thematically deep storylines they've done in Trek at least this century, never mind delivering most fully on the 2017 notion of "let's do ST as if it were a modern prestige show". Not that any ST show since then has come even close to attaining the quality of actual modern prestige shows, but IMO Pic 1 came closest.

Oh well, tastes differ I suppose.

Academy's first season was overall a pleasant surprise for me. I still find it astonishing that modern Trek has such great difficulty maintaining a unified tone and level of quality episode-to-episode. One would think that filling ten episode slots with relevant STAR TREK stories shouldn't be that difficult, yet each show really struggled with that. I don't mean what is often referred to as "filler episodes", if anything I'm arguing for MORE filler episodes, if they are defined as one-off stories that are plot- or problem-driven, yet deliver a classic Trek narrative of adventure, exploration, social commentary, allegory. You know the type. Academy brought us two especially annoying episodes that do anything but that: "Vitus Reflux" and "The Life of the Stars", which both continue the now almost decade-long trend of emphasizing soap opera character dynamics (they're not always dynamic, though) at the complete expense of the Trekkian qualities listed above. Both were embarrassing in their own, different way. Character development is good, but as I pointed out in a lengthy post elsewhere recently, it needs to be properly prepared, which I felt it wasn't in the latter case, or ideally come in the shape of an otherwise interesting story, which it didn't in the former case.

Having said that though, two out of ten ain't bad. That's a much better ratio than SNW has had of late. The rest of the season featured some stuff that I found quite compelling. As the OP pointed out, the show has given me an early-TNG vibe in the sense that here's a new cast that actually goes forward (not enough in the classic Trek sense yet, though) and is not held back by its premise. Remember that all Trek shows of the 21st century were either prequels, specifically to TOS (ENT, DIS, SNW) or shows leaning hard into TNG nostalgia (PIC, LOW). Academy is not doing either, and that is probably where that vibe comes from. I like it. Now I just wish this approach could be tied to some more traditional "boldly going" and some better quality control. Maybe we'll get that in season 2.

-The more I think about it, I should say Academy did a better job with its ensemble than most other live-action series in the franchise, with maybe DS9 being an exception. However, DS9 got over double the episodes to work with.

-Another thing that did annoy me was the way they injected Ake and the cadets into a lot of big happenings. It was like they treated the Chancellor of the Academy as a political figure too much. It made me feel like Academy should've been more like the DS9 episode "The Valiant" with that group of cadets on a starship. Then again, those were elite cadets and that would've defeated the purpose-I gather-of what Academy is supposed to be about in terms of seeing these young people grow into future officers ("The Valiant" cadets, while also young were much further along).

-I would also like to see more of the Venari Ral and the Furies.

I like the cast & characters, but I don't like the show.

There was nothing "Academy" in there. We didn't get to see them learning how to fly spaceships, how to carry out first contacts, away mission, handle gear and tools like space suits or tricorders, or get lessons in astronomy or how the transporter works.

The stories and writing themselves were honestly just AI slob.
The worst parts were the characters holding long winded, preachy, emotional speeches against each other instead of simply being allowed to act.

My favourite characters are Lurak Thor & Jay-Den. They're great, unique twists on well-known archetypes.
Caleb & Genesis work fantastic as more "traditional" handsome leads.
The three princes & princesses were the weakest link IMO.
The adult actors did a good job.
In the end I'd wish we saw more of the war college.

I think it's the worst of the Kurtzman shows...BUT that doesn't mean I didn't like things In it..I liked two episodes well enough. But so much is wrong with this show. I wish they would stop bringing stuff up from legacy shows. It's 900 years in the future and we had three episodes with strong ties to DS9 and Voyager. The Doctor is enough ties to those shows. Let's see new stuff we haven't seen before. SNW is making the same mistake. These shows need to have their own merits. Not saying other shows can't be mentioned but not so heavily. Especailly in its freshman season.

I also hate Colberts Pa jokes. It's tiring and not funny and should not be at a school.

The writing needs to improve for the students. A few had absolutely nothing important to do for almost the entire show. Jay-den and Darem come to mind. Jay-den has a very small bit to do in the final episode but except for the scenes on Darems planet they have not been in the show that much. Well at least with anything important to say or do.

Also I was just reading an article about the Bridge crew. Where the hell were they for the whole show?? They showed them once and GONE .

The writers need to learn to write for their characters. They are generally doing a very poor job of it.

Things I like..Tig Navaro. It's always fun when Reno is featured. I liked her in Disco and I like her here but she was not used well UNTIL the final two episodes. Was very happy to see she got a lot of screen time finally.

Holly Hunter and Robert Picardo both fine actors and I enjoy them on screen. They may not always get the best lines but they make it work the best they can.

Sam. Big surprise here. Not crazy about her character at first but thankfully that changed.at the end..

Anyhow that's all I can think of right now and I have mostly said it elsewhere..

I'd say I have a general like of the show. I looked forward to every episode. Episodically it was very uneven, but no episode was a drag.

I like space adventure and all that, but with now 940 episodes of Star Trek, it's hard to get me too excited by the plots of these shows. I'm far more interested in seeing the world of a post-catastrophe Federation, and otherwise the characters are what interests me. They are mostly likeable, and sometimes interesting. I probably echo some of the opinions here. I guess that's it for now.

I like the show. I like the actors and the characters, particularly Genesis and Tarima. A lot less interested in the older characters.

I posted a mini-season review in the general discussion thread, but speaking more broadly, the season was way, way better than I thought it would be prior to release, and yet by the end of the season, it let me down a little bit - which I guess is pretty par for the course for modern-day Star Trek.
