News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Wasn't the old Constitution-class (or older) Republic a cadet training ship in TOS and DS9?
We have no indication the Republic was a cadet training ship in TOS, just that Kirk served on it early in his career. As for DS9, we know there is a cadet training ship named Republic and that it is very old, but we have no indication it's a Constitution class.

During the TOS Era it was a commissioned, in-service starship. By the 2370s and DS9 it's a Cadet training vessel that never leaves Earth's solar system.

Maybe they can just reuse the Discovery bridge, or restore the Shenzhou, or hop over to SNW and borrow their bridge and keep the crusty old Republic a thing.

I don't remember a Constitution Class showing up in DS9 outside of Trials & Tribble-ations

In "VALIANT", Jake mentions the Republic as a training ship. While it is not specified as a Constitution class ship, the girl he was talking to said it hadn't left Earth's system in decades. It certainly implies a much older ship than we would normally see, like a Constitution class ship.

It is. And the 1994 edition was already three years old or a little older when "Valiant(DS9)" was written so I can imagine the episode writers going to the first edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia to find an old starship in canon they could reference as being an obsolete training ship that never strays very far from Earth or Starfleet Academy.

i can't even recall a Constitution class appearing on screen between 1987 & 2004 outside of stock footage. i recall the Stargazer was going to be a Constitution Class but was changed to Constellation class at the last minute

speaking of ships, i do hope we see more non-Earth Federation designs in Starfleet Academy

An actual, straight up view of the ship... yes, aside from "Trials and Tribbleations".

There's Constitution wreckage at Wolf 359.
We see the bridge in TNG "Relics".
Constitution's show up on several computer screens at various points.
Kirk's house in Generations has a painting of a Connie.

To the point that they already recorded the dialogue and the actors had to dub "Constellation" over their original line. The ship was named "Constellation" class because the lip movements are similar to "Constitution".

It would make sense. The past two seasons implied that most of what Starfleet has are pre-burn ships. Even in S4, Raynor mentions his ship is using tech from then. Starfleet doesn't really seem to have been building ships for about a century, so they're going to need more. Makes alot of sense for the other members to contribute ships, although realistically building new ships shouldn't really be much of an issue for them.

ya i just want to see more of the plurality ST preaches about in their ship designs, instead of the millionth variation on saucers and nacelles

to Discovery's credit, we saw Vulcan ships on Ni'Var

One thing I actually very much liked that, that made sense in context, was that in the 32nd century with Earth no longer being in the Federation... there was a distinction between Earth ships and Federation ships. Earth ships had their own designs that really didn't look like Federation ships at all.

Am I being cynical or does Academy seem like a way to save money by reusing 32nd century sets and not needing to pay for a large number of existing multi-season regular actors?

Yes, yes it is.

Saving money is the name of the game.
