News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

* By the way, it’s interesting that Kurtzman is playing coy with answering the question about the exact setting. Here I thought this was already pretty established. Will they yet surprise us all and have this somehow take place in several timeframes or something like that?
We're all assuming it's spinning off of DSC with Tilly, but it's entirely possible they want to show life BEFORE the Burn, so that could be S1, then Tilly post nu-Fed would be S2

Interesting. Something like that could be kinda neat. The Burn was like a hundred year ago, though, right? So they wouldn't be able to include the same group of characters in both seasons. Unless there’s time travel involved (again), I suppose.

Discovery is in 2024, SNW in 2025, SFA and S31 in 2026.
If there is a Picard legacy show, it would probably film after SFA. Last I heard they were putting together a pitch and a bible, but no writers room or casting was greenlit.
Section 31 is probably next to film, and I imagine they will use whatever Discovery and Academy sets are available; although they would make their own "Hero" bridge I'm sure.

Where did you hear that something akin to Legacy has a pitch and a bible, and why do you think Section 31 won’t air until 2026?

Something one of the producers - Matalas maybe? said they were working on a pitch but there was nothing official.
I prob saw it on Twitter, likely a recording or transcript from a convention.

Section 31 hasn't been given a release date, last I checked they had finished casting but hadn't started shooting.
So if SNW which is in the middle of filming now, has a release date in 2025, it makes sense that a movie that hasn't even started filming yet would likely be released in 2026, assuming they start filming within the next 6 months. Granted, a 2 hour movie might be a little bit simpler to shoot than a ten hour TV show, since it's meant to be a TV movie it probably have about the same budget as a full season.

Filming started on January 30th.

So, no real evidence. Any ‘pitch’ or ‘bible’ would have come from Matalas himself, and he has stated that CBS/Paramount are not producing Legacy.

As @Quinton has pointed out, production started on the S31 movie almost three months ago. I foresee it being broadcast by the end of this year.

Idk, you implied no one wanted Academy. So what exactly do you want?

It would be easier to list what I don’t want.

1. I don’t want a prequel to TOS. We’ve already had three of those.

2. I don’t want a show that relies on past shows and characters as a crutch. Or at least, don’t make past characters the central focus of the show. We don’t need to know the fates of every single person from the Roddenberry and Berman era.

3. I don’t want yet another show about a crew on a ship. We already currently have four shows about that.

4. I don’t want a show that only caters to the 18-25 year old demographic. I am 51 and have no interest in seeing teen angst or college shenanigans in Star Trek.

5. I don’t want a show taking place in the 32nd century, because I already stopped watching DSC after the third season because I lost interest in that boring post-Burn future.

Part of the pitch out there says something along the lines "...for the first time in a century, Starfleet Academy is training students."

It pretty clearly places it almost exactly at the time of DSC S4.

Not mention Doug Jones has said the timeline it plays out it would allow Discovery characters to cameo...

EDIT -

And yeah, if Paramount DID want to Legacy, it's not going to be a thing for several years. Hell, they WANTED to do Section 31 from the jump in 2017... it took almost a decade.

I missed that, thanks.
In that case my speculation is 2025, not 26. I imagine six month for filming (SNW S1 & 2 took 8 months each) and another 6 for post production and VFX.

Correct. The producer and several writers were interested but the show has not been approved. It may be approved in the future, or it might not never be made.

Well, I can get onboard for 3 out of 5.

Yup. The timeframe sounds just right to pick up a very nice story thread from Discovery and has plenty of promise.

I'm actually sort of with you there.

One of the more interesting things in the past two seasons of DSC was the idea of rebuilding the Federation... which the show mostly glossed over and it just kind of... happened.

This potentially gives more of an opportunity to actually show some of that. How much of that we will actually get... we will see. I'm expecting something like Riverdale In Space, so, idk. Although I was also ready to just completely write off Prodigy as a kids show and... it's actually surprisingly good.

I'm hoping it's more "young people come together to rebuild the Federation" and less "The Real World - Risa Shore - Starfleet Academy"

If I was a betting man, I would lean on the first and not the second.

I think the goal of showing mutual cooperation after a century of mistrust is something I'm all for, especially with a younger cast.

Me too...

But are young, 16-20 year olds who have never seen a Star Trek show before interested in that...

There is the potential. The young adult population is more likely to try out new franchises and explore things with limited prompting. They might not stay engaged as "fans" like older people, but they will try it out.

So, it's a matter of how we prompt engagement.

I agree with you, but as the PTB have been coy about the timeframe, all we can do is speculate.

They strongly implied the time frame in the announcement, so why are they being coy now? Did they just see the fan speculation and decide to turn into the curve, in the hopes to generating discussion and buzz?

The question is how do you get it to them, they aren't watching traditional TV or Paramount+.

Probably advertising. Youtube.

Yup.

Fans eat that speculation shit up. Free advertising

Perhaps we'll see SFA at various timepoints, a few episodes in the 2150s, then a bit in the 2250s, 2280s, 2360s, 2400s, even Relativity and Ent-J times
They could simply be extended flashbacks in the form of historic simulations that the cadets have to play through in a holodeck :D
