So, the cut scenes of a 1990s computer game suck and therefore an Academy TV series is doomed to fail right out of the gate?Let me put it this way. The PC Starfleet Academy game is probably one of my most memorable gaming experiences, and I think it beats a lot of other games now even decades later (helps that sci-fi flight sims have kind of gone out of fashion), rivaling maybe even current games like Star Trek Online (only Bridge Crew comes close in recreating the feel of being a Trek captain as far as recent games in my opinion).
That said, if the game were not a game but just edited as a movie, the storyline itself is not that great, even with the presence of Shatner, Takei, and Koenig. The game showed us what can be done with a cadet storyline and honestly it would've been very dull if it wasn't a game and you weren't literally playing the main character.
It's not doomed to fail, but the game took the setting as far as it could realistically go and honestly to go further would break the point of an Academy show to begin with. But that's just my opinion,So, the cut scenes of a 1990s computer game suck and therefore an Academy TV series is doomed to fail right out of the gate?
If you look at the best franchises based around a school setting, the main story points of these franchises have nothing to do with said school (Voldemort taking over the world, Magneto taking revenge on humanity for its mistreatment of mutants). It's an apples and oranges comparison, and that game wasn't exactly striving to be King Lear when it came to the writing of those cut scenes anyway.
I think even you would agree that's highly unlikely. Some Star Trek fans won't even bother watching it and those who do will only be those invested enough in the characters and events from Discovery. Granted of course there will inevitably be critics who will give it good reviews. It’s going to be really funny if this show ends up universally beloved.
Indeed, and I think many are too quick to condemn it because all they see is a limit in the setting. Yet some of my favorite books revolve around the school and training of cadets and new recruits. I enjoyed many Star Trek books in the same vein, so I fail to see why it would not work just because of a video game. It's an apples and oranges comparison, and that game wasn't exactly striving to be King Lear when it came to the writing of those cut scenes anyway.
Part of Prodigy's appeal, which is the closest Trek parallel right now, was that the kids answered to no one (holo Janeway was kind of just there) and did what they wanted when they wanted. I'd be curious to see how Season 2 will handle that now that they are basically in a military learning environment now.I think even you would agree that's highly unlikely. Some Star Trek fans won't even bother watching it and those who do will only be those invested enough in the characters and events from Discovery. Granted of course there will inevitably be critics who will give it good reviews.
Well, right out of the gate we're just going to have to accept this show isn't going to be a realistic depiction of a school setting anyway. Indeed, I suspect one of the reasons they've chosen the 32nd century setting for this show is because how flexible it can be with the school scenario. Assuming they're going to have this new Academy in a space-based facility like Starfleet Command that's warp capable you can have the cadets travelling and doing exploring each week while also not straying too far from their classroom. And the 32nd century itself is still a blank slate as far as worldbuilding is concerned, not to mention Starfleet Academy itself is something that the franchise hasn't really developed in much canonical details, in any era. There really is a lot of potential here to do something new and entertaining. And a lot more interesting than watching Captain Shaw and Seven of Nine team up with Dr. Bashir in a Legacy spin-off ever could be.If you look at the best franchises based around a school setting, the main story points of these franchises have nothing to do with said school (Voldemort taking over the world, Magneto taking revenge on humanity for its mistreatment of mutants).
That's why I'll hold off on seeing how the Academy show will play out until I see what other story plots it has going on, but on its own a school setting is not enough to carry a story as can be seen in other "school" franchise that quickly deviate from that environment as soon as possible.
First off, you're conflating Star Trek with Starfleet/the Federation. Star Trek is, in the words of Gene Roddenberry, "A one hour dramatic television series. Action-Adventure-Science Fiction." He continues "Star Trek is a 'Wagon Train' concept., built around characters to travel to worlds 'similar' to our own and meet the action-adventure-drama which becomes our stories. Their transportation is the cruiser 'USS Yorktown' performing a well defined and long ranged Exploration-Science-Security mission." That's Star Trek. The stories are about the characters and the people they encounter while doing the Exploration-Science-Security-Diplomacy stuff. Other posters have more than shown how DISCO has used all the classic setups to propel their stories. But again the meat of any Trek story isn't always about those. They're usually just a starting point. "Court Martial" from TOS isn't about any of those things. You really think they're gonna stick to those core Trek ideas? DISCO was all over the place, and it barely scratched the surface of what Star Trek is about. Classic Trek is exploration, diplomacy, and deep stories, but DISCO? Pfft, hardly!
Our campaign violating IDIC? Please. We just want Starfleet Academy to be the real deal, not some watered-down version of Trek that'll disappoint all of us. We're not against change, but let's not forget what made Star Trek awesome in the first place.
#StopLuveStupis is here to stir things up and make sure the new show doesn't drop the ball
Subtle is not something Star Trek has ever been good at. If you think that, then you don't know Star Trek. If you think Star Trek isn't over the top preachy, then you don't know Star Trek.Star Trek used to be subtle, man! It tackled important issues without being so over-the-top and preachy.
As stated above. It's not about those things. It just uses those things to create and propel drama.Classic Trek was about exploration and diplomacy, not just throwing together a bunch of diverse characters and calling it a day. It's like they're just ticking boxes instead of focusing on what made Star Trek great in the first place.
To paraphrase a great fictional man "It is not the hell your Trek."So yeah, #StopLuveStupis is here to call out DISCO and make sure the new Starfleet Academy show doesn't follow the same path. We want our Trek back...
