StarCraft 2?

Afaik the game actually scans your system and sets the options at what it thinks will run best on your system. If the portraits are off it's because they don't think your game will run smoothly with them on.

That could be. It just seems odd to me that it would have that setting when my computer has no problem with any of the other game animations, and that's not an issue with the portraits in my copy of the original game.

* shrugs * :D It's a pretty minor thing in any case.

In the options, under the Graphics tab, you'll see a "Unit Portraits" option. You can change that from 2D to 3D. :)

Ah, thanks. You'd think I'd have noticed that the first time, when it was right in front of me.

The Protoss player was incredibly stupid. He could have done a full infantry rush to wipe out the Terran player instead of revealing his strategy by sending one unit after the base.

Hmmm. I haven't read all of this thread yet. Do we have any TBBS StarCraft 2 matches running or planned?

^ don't ask me, I don't play the game, I just watch it. :D

... taking laziness to the next level...

That would be a good idea, but I don't know how many people here actually have the game. I'd be up for it though.

I'd still like someone to do an honest to god report on why Koreans glammed on to Starcraft specifically. I mean, the C&C games were still good back then, weren't they?

Yeah, I don't get it either. I read before that it was simply lucky timing that helped StarCraft take off just as Korea was getting hooked on the internet and online gaming, but that can't be the only reason. Plenty of RTS games must have came out in the late 90's that could have hit it big instead of StarCraft.

Yeah. I mean, is it the generic Warhammer inspired SF that hooked them? I guess SC was one of the first games with three unique races, so it definitely has depth... but that doesn't seem to be an adequate reason for a game to become hugely popular (or even the genre itself... why not FPSes?).

I'm very unimpressed with battle.net. It's down quite a bit, very laggy at other times. I'm almost positive it worked much better in the Warcraft 3 days.

Also the ranking system is stupid. And they do a poor job of documenting it. So I'm #1 in a gold league... what does that even mean? As far as I can tell it means that I'm actually a crappy gold league player because otherwise I would've been promoted before I amassed enough points to rise to the top of my league.

Also the bonus pool is a pretty silly idea. From what I read it's supposed to encourage people to play more since they get bonus points. In reality once you deplete it does the complete opposite. Why play if you're going to get fewer points for your effort and just hose your rank? It makes no sense to tie any of this stuff to how often you play.

The only reason I decided to dredge up this thread is because I just so happened to want to play a few matches and getting nothing but lag and disconnects, as are the few people I've managed to play with. Just...bad. I thought Blizzard had this shit down after running WoW servers for the past few years.

^And the graphics and interface will still be only slightly more advanced than Warcraft 3 :guffaw:

They are still ironing out some issues. On the whole, it's been pretty stable.

Yeah I don't even know. It's wierd. The idea for leagues was to separate player pools to match skills levels, but they don't even do that, that's a completely different match making system... so I don't really know what the point of that is anymore besides having a cool Diamond badge on your profile.

It's designed to do the opposite, just as it does. It's analogous to rested XP in WoW. It's just a little incentive for casuals to play without feeling like they will fall way behind, while discouraging grinding ladder all day in an effort to mass points, leaving casuals in the dust.

I will agree that it's silly though. Since it's a rating system, it should be based purely on wins and losses, without artificially adding in all these bonus points. I've played almost 200 1v1 games and I've never run out of bonus points.

I have not ecountered this issue, save for a few days when bnet was wonky.
