Star Wars: Visions - Anime Anthology Series

Uh, Its a B wing, them using it isn't "without permission" its there's, in whatever form.
would be nice to be acknowledged, but Its still a B wing, or a derivative of it, Disney can use it. If Disney used one of my fan designs, I'd be tickled pink, not annoyed.

People who do fan art, even me, know its playing in someone elses sandbox. We have no rights to the design if we call something Star Trek, or Star Wars. Now your own universe? sure, its yours, but if you take an already established ship and change a few things, its still there ship. Copyright law is vague like that.

That's not true. His B-Wing has specific differences from the basic one, and they even copy the paintjob. Its not the same as stealing a completely original ship, but a company doesn't own fan art of its products, and copying (or tracing, like a few Star wars comics have done) fan art is still bullshit, unethical and is probably illegal (taking someone's independent work without paying them is illegal even if its related to an ip you own, especially when the person in question isn't stealing or doing anything illegal).

As a hypothetical example, let's take the Tie Fighter anime style short film a fan made (you can find it on youtube, its awesome). If Disney just put it on Disney + without asking the creator it would be theft, even though they own Tie Fighters and all the SW stuff in the short. Or If someone draws and releases a SW fan comic online Disney can't just publish or release it themselves without getting permission and paying.

Fan work is the fan's work, period. At most, Disney might be able to stop a project if a person was making a profit off of selling Star Wars related things in a way they don't like, but owning an ip does not give them ownership of original work based on the ip that a person made and put online.

Just a couple of random thoughts. The high heel pumps in episode 1 really seemed out of place in both Star Wars and Feudal Japan ;). That is definitely the stylistic standout though, and a bold way to open. At the end of Tattooine Rhapsody, that song reminds me a bit of Cheap Trick's Surrender.

Some really out there entries but I appreciate that they let the artists take liberties with the material even if sometimes I wish it hewed closer. I think TO-B1 maybe stretched that envelope past the breaking point. I still need to watch 5 and 9 to finish it up. Lots of katana sabers!

I do enjoy these kind of kind of anthology when they come like The Animatrix and Batman Gotham Knight.

I suspect EC Henry won't mind at all tbf, all his work lately suggests wanting to get a job at Lucasfilm (who can blame him) and this little bit of news will only help with that.

So someone modified a B-Wing and is annoyed someone else modified a B-Wing in a vaguely similar way?

Uh....

What? It isn't vague at all, there's side by side comparisons in the tweet, look at them, even parts of the paint job are from his design.

They copied his re-design, and then modified it a bit themselves after.

We've seen the first 4 so far and enjoyed them greatly. "The Duel" just blew us away - my hubby, who normally doesn't watch behind-the-scenes stuff, did so with this one. It was nice to see we were correct that the filmmakers were inspired by Kurosawa films - it reminded me of The Seven Samurai and Hubby spotted a visual reference to The Hidden Fortress, both of which inspired Star Wars. :) FYI, Lucy Liu did the voice of the Bandit Leader. Her mask and "umbrella" lightsaber were Very Cool. The whole thing was so gorgeous! I loved all the little details - the lightsaber hilts looked like katana hilts, the look of the bandits, just... just all of it!

FWIW, my interpretation is that Ronin, which means "drifter" or "wanderer" and is usually referring to a masterless samurai, is a Sith who lost his master (left/killed or they were killed by someone else) and decided to have his own code, owing allegiance to neither Sith nor Jedi. IMDB says "The character of the mysterious Ronin and his droid are elaborated upon in "Star Wars: Ronin: A Visions Novel" written by Emma Mieko Candon." I might have to get that.

"Tatooine Rhapsody" was a lot of fun. Don't assume it's aimed at kids because of the "cartoony" style - that's common in Anime, and while the characters are drawn that way, the backgrounds were more realistic (and gorgeous). Temuera Morrison returned to do Boba Fett's voice and Joseph Gordon-Levitt did Jay's voice (does anyone know if he did the singing?). There were depths there if you want to see them (Jay seems like a Padawan who escaped slaughter and was befriended by Geezer, who is a Hutt) and I found the ending uplifting. Rock on!

"The Twins" was our least favorite, if nothing else for the whole "somehow fighting without suits in airless space" thing. I thought the idea was interesting (and probably inspired by Luke & Leia being twins), but could have been executed better. Neil Patrick Harris was the boy and Alison Brie was the girl.

I really liked "The Village Bride". The theme and visuals reminded me of Miyazaki. Other than the silly high heels, I liked F a lot, and the bride and her sister were great too. Karen Fukuhara (from The Boys) did a nice job as F. It was fun seeing those stupid droids from the PT are still stupid.

Exactly. The fan artist modified a B-Wing, a design they don't own. At worst, the Visions folks modified those modifications, creating something else. There's no crime here.

They didn't "copy" EC's designs. Even if that was their starting point (impossible to prove), they further modified it, so it's not his exact version.

I almost "liked" your post, but I can't get on board with your hate for "The Twins", which is epic. If you're worried about the "science" of them being in space unprotected, you're thinking about it wrong. :)

(and, hey, at least the droid was wearing a space helmet!)

And as far as its execution, it was perfect for what it set out to do.

Welcome to when Studio Trigger decides to go bat shit insane.
OK guys, tell me why I'm wrong. I'm willing to rethink my opinion.

Thanks for mentioning the behind the scenes, I wouldn't have seen that otherwise and I enjoyed watching them even for the ones I didn't care for and at around five minutes they don't overstay their welcome. The one for The Elder was interesting, the guy voicing the kid looked exactly like him! And then David Harbour and James Hong(!), what's not to love? I've seen some stuff with James Hong at conventions and he's extremely lively and livid for 92!

Yeah, I figured that had to be a knowing wink to the audience. Not exactly my thing but I can appreciate what they were trying for.

Finally watched all the episodes. Enjoyed it overall, some episodes obviously more than others. I can't say much of it will stick with me for long though and I'm glad I spread it out over a few days because a lot of the episodes have very similar storylines. That would be my only negative really. I guess when you give an anime studio carte blanche to tell a Star Wars story, they're all going to involve Jedi and lightsaber duels. In order of preference...

The Ninth Jedi: Really loved this one, great concept. Would love to see more
TO-B1: Very surreal but I had a great time with it. Beautiful
The Duel: Another stunner. Amazing animation, action and character designs
The Elder: Enjoyed the surreal, creepy vibe of this

Tatooine Rhapsody: Enjoyed this more than I thought I would
The Twins: Very out there! Cool action. Really bad and stiff dialogue.
The Village Bride: People seem to really love this one. I was pretty meh on it.

Akakiri: Struggled to follow along. A bit all over the place.
Lop & Ocho: I thought this one was terrible. Actively hated it.

Would like to see a season 2, but give it to some other animation studios around the world please.
