Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Teaser Trailer

Then they're not really Jedi any more, are they? JINO, maybe...

I am going to assume that both the Jedi Order and Sith Order are basically finished now that Luke's gone. What we have is either the rise of their successor orders (Knights of Ren and Order of Skywalker), or basics are being returned to now that the two main "trained" Force users were both trained by Luke Skywalker, and going onwards from there. The Rise of Skywalker as a path for future Force users.

From the mouth of Luke Skywalker himself: "...and I will not be the last Jedi."

It still technical make Rey the last Jedi if she starts up something new that doesn't use the name Jedi anymore. But by the time she's done, she's both the last Jedi and the first Skywalker, or the later written canon of the Journal of the Whills will call it a transition period of Jedi to Skywalker via the Chosen One (Anakin Skywalker to Luke Skywalker to Rey the Skywalker).

7 and 8 are consistent in presenting the message that having a Jedi order is a good thing. To swerve in the other direction at this point would be unfortunate.

People are once again reaching for the most convoluted explanations for things when the simplest answers are already 'in play'; it's happening with Palpatine's return and it's happening with the title of the film.

The Jedi are not a bad thing. But perhaps their day is done. 25,000 years or whatever is a good run. But even they got too wrapped up in traditions and such. They lost what they were, and they can't bring it back. So it might be time to move on. Let the next thing come and reshape how the Galaxy views the Force. The Jedi Order fell nearly 55 years ago for the Galaxy by the time of the Rise of Skywalker. There have been a few beats here and there over the decades from survivors and trainees of survivors. But for the most part, it was gone as far at the public was concerned. Luke Skywalker was basically the last legend of a Jedi Knight for most. It is unclear if there are rumors of Rey floating around, of if the last set of legends are Luke's stand on Crait.

Similarly, Palpatine is the last Sith. Snoke doesn't seem to have been a proper one (if he was one at all). Darth Vader turned again at the end. If Palpatine's still around, than the last Sith must fall to the Skywalker (prophecies are weird sometimes)

Rey managed to either make her own lightsaber, based on Anakin's, or she rebuilt Anakin's lightsaber from the parts she had left (though the one she has looks like it fits her hand better than Anakin's did). But there is a LOT of missing plot here since we only have a teaser. The Saga ends, but a new legend is crafted for a new generation.

An interesting little tidbit I stumbled upon from the book "Book of Sith." Obviously, noncanon, but interesting all the same:

Now, I put little weight behind this, but Rian Johnson drew some inspiration from the book "The Jedi Way" (I think that's what it is called...):

Regarding The Book of Sith and The Jedi Path, I'm pretty sure that they're based on Canonical sources and can be considered to be Canon themselves even now.

Both were released before 2014 so they're not canon.
But anyone working with the licence is allowed to use stuff from them, and any other Legends material.

I know when they were released, but my point is that I believe they're considered "retroactively Canonical" under the new Canon Policy; I could be mistaken, though.

Like with many canon stories, they can reach into Legends material and grab what works for the specific story(I assume with permission from the Story Team). Thrawn and the Force projection come to mind. If they choose to make a Palpatine clone, they can make a Palpatine clone. There's nothing precluding them from doing so.

And before someone brings up that GL quote, we were never supposed to get the prequels. We got the prequels. Episode III was going to be the last film. We're getting Episode IX in nine months. I hate to break it to you, but George Lucas is an unreliable source.
