For a series about war, many of the battles I have seen in the Star Trek films and tv shows have been lackluster. I remember watching a battle in the series Star Wars: Rebels, watching as capital ships were being taken down without firing a shot in defense or doing evasive maneuvers.

It seems to me that many of JJ Abrams' films have this one common problem - how did this or that happen? This issue with the Palpatine fleet is the latest in a long line of headscratchers.

One small comfort for Star Wars - its chief competitor this week, the musical Cats, is bombing even harder in the ratings, with a 17% score at Rotten Tomatoes.

The wide shot of the assembled Rebel fleet (seen close up in the trailers with the Falcon) was an absolute stunner. The main Star Wars theme kicked in and the guy next to me let out a cheer. We exchanged a brief look that communicated "oh hell yeah - here we go!" ... and then it didn't.

This isn't actually an issue.

It is when you have to consult tie in material or assumptions. Sure, the Emperor had decades to prepare for this but a fleet of this magnitude can't be hidden, no matter how good security is and how good your intelligence service is.

This fleet needs probably a million+ crewmen and officers to operate not to speak of gigantic space docks to actually build them and we are led to believe that no one in the galaxy even caught a rumor or found it odd that imperial Navy personell were retasked to a position and then dropped off the books.

However it is a minor quibble on a nerd level, i doubt a general viewer would care about such things. The movie had much bigger problems and many of them not its fault as it had to wrap a complete mess of storyline and inconsistency in a little over 2 hours. If they had pulled it off i would have been greatly impressed.

Daisy Ridley as Rey however kills it in this movie, her best performance to date but she also has to do the heavy lifting as it's basically her movie and the others are just background (especially Boyega who has been demoted to punch line speaker and a short personal story when he meets other Stormtrooper deserters).

Poe (Oscar Isaacs) is still an awesome character.. we learn he had a shady past before the rebellion (which Rebel didn't?) but the scene where he loses hope in the final battle after seeing his troops being annihilated was also quite emotional. Unfortunately the impact was lost as we know of the coming Rebel fleet from the trailers - Disney couldn't resist putting in the money shot of the big Rebel fleet in the trailers so we were certain the battle would be won (we would be certain anyway as it's Star Wars and the good guys usually win, especially if it's the final movie).

Finally i can also say something good about Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, who up until now was the most major disappointment in the franchise (but not due to Driver's acting). He should have been the next Vader but instead came off as a childish, anger management impaired idiot because he was written like it. This movie finally has him putting on some menace and gravitas which should have been there from the beginning (i was floored by the scene when he stopped the laserblast from Poe in mid air - that was badass). I rolled my eyes however when Kylo and Rey kissed.. why for god's sake? Was this supposed to a romantic kiss then where did this come from (i never got any underlying sexual element in their dealings)?
Him dying by sacrificing his life force for Rey was cool though.. it would be hard to explain to people how this mass murderer is suddenly a good guy and should be accepted, the same proplem Vader would have had if he had survived back then.

Rey’s linage confuses me. Since when did Sidious have a kid. So if TFA is 35 ABY and her dad was in his mid 30’s when she was around 6, he would have had him sometime in the Dark Times. I find it hard to imagine that he was much of a lady magnet back then, or that he had much interest into the fairer sex.
I would have just said that Rey was the kid of one of his clones that broke away and wanted nothing to do with becoming Emperor.

I understood that the ships were not fully crewed? First order officers talked about increasing recruitment because of the ships.

I think that there was enough sexual tension going around to justify the kiss. I personally would have liked Ben Solo to live. Maybe go into hiding. Live at Tatooine in solitude. Him dying was not necessary.

Do we know if Palpatines child is the dad or the mom? I think that the actors playing Reys parents can be old enough for the child to be born between TPM and AOTC.

Well, so much for hope.

My son (who thought I was way too critical of The Force Awakens and JJ in general) went to the midnight showing.

His text to me included the words "I had my head in my hands for most of it" and "The worst of all the Star Wars films".

I might still go tomorrow, but maybe not.

It’s still better than the Last Jedi. I had to watch that movie again in the triple bill and it’s just depressing. Should have done what the people next to me did and went for food during that one. :)

Well we both liked The Last Jedi. A lot.

Our opinions diverged on TFA which I gave a grudging 4/10 which Jr. liked, but his take on the new one also included "It's awful"," What a sad end", "Hilariously stupid" and "A bad way to say goodbye to Carrie".

Now I'm a lot less impartial than he is. I think JJ's uniformly terrible and was always going to screw it up, and that his Trek stuff is bad too. Jr. likes some of JJ's work, yet...

Anyhow, all second hand until I've seen it myself.

Considering she actually died in real life, I thought they handled her fine. Luke in the other hand... that still annoys me.
That and that god awful Holdo character.

He meant sad that Carrie's farewell was in this film, not that that bit was poorly done.

I wasn't a big fan of TLJ when it first came out. It was more enjoyable the second time round (still found the casino planet escapades weighed down the middle act). After today though ... and I can't believe I'm saying this ... but I appreciate TLJ more now.

If I were to rank the sequel trilogy based off of how I feel right now: The Last Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Rise of Skywalker.

Just saw it now, end credits still rolling. A couple of questionable decisions but overall pretty good.

Still thought TLJ was better.

1) Ben Solo dying surprised me. I expected him turning good and living out the rest of his life somewhere secluded.

2) Since Poe suggested that the Palpatine in this movie was a clone, i suspect that the crews manning the numerous Imperial ships were clones as well.

3) General Hux being a spy surprised me. I thought it was the Allegiant General who was the spy.

4) I wonder where all those Resistance ships came from ?

5) Rose and Finn relationship seems platonic now.

6) Who were all those guys in the seats when Palpatine was talking to Rey ? Sith fans ?

7) I long suspected that Rey had a relationship with Palpatine. The way she fought in the TFA and TLJ did suggest that she have a connection to the dark side.

8) I liked the way the death of Fisher/Leia was treated in the movie. Good to see Han Solo and Luke Skywalker back as well.

Overall the movie was better than The Last Jedi but this movie did have it's flaws.

I don't think it was a "romantic" type of relationship. If you are the most powerful man in the galaxy......I'm sure you can get whatever you desire. Or perhaps his son was test clone that showed NO force ability so he tossed him away like trash?

So what did Finn have to say to Rey? They sort of forgot about that.

I think we ALL KNOW what Finn wanted to say........but came to terms with her not feeling the same.

I haven't seen anyone mention Finn's
obvious force sensitivity in this episode 3 or 4 times he FELT things most notably Leia's death.

I didn’t get that at all. I’m sure Rey could feel the same way as Finn. Just give it time.

Yeah but he’s dead. Time to move on.
Talk about a horrifying scene that was. It’s going to lead to nightmares. :)
