There was a fun Rian Johnson style subversion in this movie. The resistance had all these plans to destroy the navigation beacon in the tower, and that plan proved completely useless immediately :) Thats the kind of thing you'd expect in TLJ.

The old EU clone idea would have explained everything and made the movie better. It may have been silly 20 years ago but now in the Disney Era it would have solved the screenwriters' problems of how to bring back Sidious/Palpatine and have it at least make sense.

I saw someone joke on Twitter that they should just re-release Dark Empire with a "Journey to The Rise of Skywalker" sticker over the "Legends" banner.

That is not what he wanted to tell her, the writers and, I think, John Boyega have all said that he wanted to tell her about his force powers. I don't know why they didn't actually put that in the movie, and just left it hanging the way they did.

It's so exciting how revelations like that allow us to recontextualize earlier scenes and solve lingering mysteries from the other movies:

Yes, indeed, at least in my experience. No doubt there is a fan petition demanding such a thing.

That said though, it might be a good idea to use some of the better EU stuff as a basis for various spinoffs. I really enjoyed the Michael A Stackpole’s X-Wing novels and they wouldn’t have to change much to fit it into the new canon either.

Come to think of it, the X-Wing novels would make a good TV series.

I agree. I have no problem with them adapting Legends EU material, aside from Mara Jade. I certainly was excited to see Thrawn and if we had him show up again in a live action series of some kind I would really enjoy it. And, I agree on the X-Wing series. Stackpole does a good job and I am never opposed to more dog fights.

I genuinely loved TROS for much of this. Legitimately it applied a new lens, a slightly different perspective, on past events. And, for my money, was worth it.

When I was a kid, I thought Dark Empire was awesome. It was dark and different, the artwork was out there, and the story expanded Sith and Jedi lore. I was rather miffed that the novels almost completely ignored those events.

I've skimmed some previews of Dark Empire online, but I just can't get past the weird single color art. The really needed to decide if they wanted to go black and white, or full color, not some weird combination of the two.

Read some weird reports today that whatever countries got The Art of TROS early will have the book pulled from shops. Why? No idea, maybe someone didn't sign off on something.

One of those rare times I'm annoyed with preordering things from Amazon. Ordered this book last May, two days before I was supposed to get it, got the notification that they were delaying it. Did some research, saw that they moved the book to the end of March. Annoying but I can live with it. Then saw that stores released it early. Now its pulled again. I just want the damned book!

Even if we had GL for all three trilogies there would have been a mismatched of philosophies.

Oh, no doubt, due the influence on changing times. But I'm speaking more or less about the structure he had established with the OT (even if it was done as he went along), and also used for the PT. One would naturally expect that a similar structure would have been used for the ST as it then became a series staple, but it clearly wasn't. I don't even remember seeing many of the screen wipes or transitions he had designed to be used across the series in order for there to be a consistency.

Well, I'm less worried about screen wipes, sorry.

I think the ST is more consistent than is given credit for, largely because it is still so fresh and new. I've rewatched TPM as well as TFA and TLJ recently and each film has its overall life within the larger whole. There is a mythological element to it that I think Lucas was really trying to call to mind and the ST continues that but in a more subtle way. I think it uses mythology but not the way people expect, in a Joseph Campbell way. Instead, it builds from more Shakespeare and Greek story telling.

Either of them would be good. But knowing Abrams holds the rein to the franchise, he'd probably go for Cumberbatch. Kind of looks like him with that downward stare.
How does Abrams' "hold the reins?" He hasn't been announced operating with SW in any other capacity after Episode 9.

Bardem has the voice and the sinister gravitas to pull off a live-action Chiss officer of Thrawn's stature and power within the Empire. If they ever cast a live-action Thrawn for a television or movie project I hope they at least offer the role to Javier and see if he's interested. We could do far, far worse.

I've envisioned him in the role ever since I first thought about it.

I guess that would be a bit nitpicky, sorry. It would be easy to classify them as being part of the structure.

And come to think of it, I do see a bit of Shakespeare in the ST, in how the characters are sometimes poised.

That must be a misunderstanding on my part, as I thought he and his company were doing everything SW movie related for LucasFilm and I hadn't heard otherwise. Then again, it's still too early to tell what will happen next with SW.

That would be news to me then. Not that I'm overly concerned of the business dealings of LFL or Abrams so I could have easily have missed it. But, I don't think Abrams has any more sway over SW than any other director at this point.

Yeah, like I said, probably a misunderstanding based on the circumstances. I thought I had read that he had a pretty large sway, but then again that'd be quite a coup if it meant SW movies in general.

Bad Robot didn't produce Rogue One.

Ok, so who produced Rogue One and Solo? I'm just curious.

Lucasfilm. Officially. They didn't outsource any other studios or producers so far as I know.
