I'm really not either. I actually thought this was going to happen after walking out of TFA. I was hopeful I was going to be wrong, particularly in light of real life events. But there were a lot of clues that led to the idea this was going to happen. Now, I think I'm more excited where this might lead for Ep IX than anything. There's a few ways I think this can go.

The way it goes down, I wonder if we could get "Luke the White." One of the interesting things about some of the early drafts of Return of the Jedi is that both Obi-Wan and Yoda (in different circumstances) are able to come back from being one with the Force. If they can do this and not make it cheesy, I think it'd be pretty cool.

Or Luke stays a Force Ghost. Really, after two films, its time for this generation to stand on their own. Luke, Han and Leia didn't really have anyone helping them out past A New Hope other than Yoda training Luke. But everything was done by the big three. Even though Luke doesn't seem to really leave Ahch-To, he looms majorly over events as does Leia. Rey, Poe and Finn need to do their own thing.

Depends on your definition of shockers. Twists and turns? From the sound of things, yes.

Episode 9 was meant to be Leia's movie, but since Carrie died, I wonder what's going to happen.

It's also been said nothing in TLJ died because of her death.

Since the big spoiler is already out, I'm gonna go ahead and post my reaction....

I had to blur my vision to not see what you wrote, because not everyone saw whatever it is you're mentioning. So, please hide this behind a spoiler tag, for the sake of the rest of us. The "big spoiler" isn't out for everyone!

Yeah, they’ve really had to go back to the drawing board, I’m sure. Which is why I think anything’s up for grabs. Even my first theory.

On the off chance that somebody already managed to see the movie somehow and posted spoilers here, I am posting this without reading any of the thread.

I got my ticket for the Thursday "soft opening," or whatever they call it. Seriously, if the movie is being shown at all the theaters on Thursday, why is Friday advertised as the opening day?

I am quite looking forward to seeing it! I wish I had a chance to re-watch TFA (for about the tenth time) as a refresher.

Kor

It used to be that movies would have "early screenings" at 12 am Friday morning, but because of the Aurora, CO movie shooting in 2008, those "early screenings" got moved back to Thursdays before 7 or 8 pm.

Abrams wasn't trying to play to audience nostalgia; he was trying to play to his own (and Lawrence Kasdan's), which is why The Force Awakens is so blatantly repetitively evocative of A New Hope.

Doesn’t matter. TLJ relies upon the foundation of TFA, and not just in the sense that a sequels plot obviously follows its predecessor. I have a suspicion that it wouldn’t really work without it.

Twists don’t work without set up

When I said TLJ ‘banked on nostalgia’, I wasn’t just talking about nostalgia for the OT.

And I never thought TFA stuck that close to TFA. But if you think that movie overdid it, TLJ is just as ‘bad’ in that regard,
It ‘adapts’ two movies, then loops to emulating the last 1/4 of ROTS
Also not a huge fan of tying critical opinions too closely with attempts at pop-analysing creators. There’s a place for also critiquing the ‘whys’ when discussing a final product (for eg. discussing propaganda) but this situation (trying to read the future) isn’t really it.

But that’s neither here nor there.

I purposefully kept my post vague, so I didn't think I'd need to code it.

The hypocrisy that's rearing its head with the spoiler leaks from TLJ is astounding. People who were calling Rey amazing after TFA are now callng her nothing more than a plot device to prop up other characters.

Also this thread has a spoiler tag, which means un-tagged spoilers is allowed, people won't get warned for it.

Great movie

I really liked the choice they made for Rey's background. She doesn't need to be some child of destiny or keeping some lineage going. It goes along well with Yoda's lesson for Luke and counterpoints Kylo's cutting oneself off from the past. One needs to evolve beyond clinging to the past.

Will put in spoiler-code, just in case..

I really think that anything is possible for Luke in the future. As we see with Yoda, Force ghosts can still use the Force and affect the real world. So who knows what Luke can now do.

”See you round, kid.”

Also, Yoda has gotten so much more forthright in his beyond-old-age.

Just got back from seeing it! Spectacular!

It had so many great comedic moments (the very beginning, the Force talk between Rey and Luke, etc). Kylo Ren was better used compared to TFA. The mind exchange between him and Rey was really cool.

Who/what is Snoke? Colour me intrigued... I loved all the nods to the Original Trilogy too. R2-D2 replaying Leia’s message, Yoda, the AT-AT’s, etc.

I thought Rey was extremely naive and stupid for thinking she could turn Kylo back to the Light. Luke projecting himself to the final battle (where was that, btw?) was so cool. When he didn’t die after the many rounds of gunfire I thought he was safe, and then he wasn’t. :(

I’m going to miss the original three but bring on Episode IX!

I really liked the bit with the dice. Having them disappear in Kylo's hands was a nice touch. I do expect Luke to show up as a force ghost with Carrie having passed away.

She may have been naive to think she could turn Kylo but so was Luke for believing he could turn Vader. She did turn out to be right about his conflict toward's Snoke, just not how he'd play it out.

Saw it at the local midnight screening. Was a very enjoyable film, far better than The Force Awakens as it wasn't just a retelling of a previous film. Taking the nephews to see it on Xmas Eve, so I'll get to take more of it in then.
