I didn't find Maz distracting at all, but I think that was in part because she was interacting with all this real stuff and real people. Snoke just sits there being CGI and his scenes stick out like they're from another movie.

The CGI Yoda still doesn't look like Yoda to me. Especially the version they plaster on merch. The proportions of the face, the hair, the skin color, the skin texture, etc. are all wrong.
True. Which is mind-boggling. Why couldn't they've just scanned the original puppet from ESB?
Because the original puppet was in no condition to be of any help. Apparently the thing has deteriorated a lot. The same reason, they couldn't use the original puppet in the first place.

Yeah, but they should have been able to get the basic contours from it none the less.

Like Venardhi said, they screwed up the proportions. CGI Yoda looked kinda chubby and his ears were weird.

Maybe he had a healthier amount of body fat when he was thirty years younger, and started to get emaciated when he was older and weaker.

As long as we're comparing characters as they appeared in the OT and the PT, I've never understood why they made Palpatine look even more horrendous at the end of ROTS than he looked in ROTJ.

There is something more realistic using physical characters whether it is puppets or people in makeup rather than a glossy looking CGI character.

I guess - but I definitely think something like Watto looks better than those mosquito-type things from Maz's place.

It is more than just being softer. CGI Yoda has a shorter neck, shorter upper lip, different shaped eyes, shorter face, broader shoulders, shorter arms, longer legs, etc. etc. etc.

He still looks a lot better than the original Episode I puppet. I think it was probably a conscious decision on the part of the digital animators to have Prequel and Clone Wars-era Yoda look noticeably different from the way he appeared in the Original Trilogy even if it doesn't make sense in terms of his overall proportions. They probably knew some fans would think he looks too different from the way he does when he's living in exile on Dagobah but it was a way for the CGI Yoda to stand out and look younger and from a different era.

I'm not entirely sold on the CGI Yoda in any of his appearances over the years and there are times he looks too digitized and detached from the flesh and blood actors, but for the most part it worked and is much better-looking than the awkward and goofy puppet they made for the original release of The Phantom Menace.

I have n o problems with the CGI Yoda, he's more active they don't have to make special sets to film him and poor Frank Oz doesn't have to further rin his already aging knees.

What would the Lord Of The Rings movies have been like with a puppet Gollum? And really I didn't see them backing off of the CGI in TFA. The visual effects were so demanding it took more than just ILM to do them, which is unusual for a Star Wars movie.

In case anyone forgot the Episode I puppet.....

it is really bad. :guffaw:

Still, that just proves you can screw puppets up. Puppets are one of the reasons Star Wars OT will continue to look better than movies much newer than itself. Thank god they couldn't do CG back then. Remember this guy?

Good CG better than bad puppet, but nothin' beats a good puppet.

This is what I mean about Jabba in ROTJ and ANH Special edition and why I would have preferred they hadn't used CGI for Maz and Snoke.

Part of the reason that Yoda looked so bad in TPM was that George Lucas wanted him to look younger and after seeing various drawings went with this.

Part of the problem with shoehorning the Jabba scene into ANH was that they couldn't make him nearly as BIG as he was in ROTJ. What a debacle.

Shoehorning Jabba into ANH was almost as bad as shoehorning Riker and Troi into Enterprise finale.

Almost.

Dunno, I am partial to how Han's sarcasm-disguised-as-compliment turned into an unintended joke, and to him treading on Jabba's tail. That was actually good. Other than killing the pacing, that scene doesn't bother me much.

But all the added CG to ANH was embarrassing. The CG creatures, and Jabba, stand out so much and just don't fit in at all. It's like a collage where you clearly see the paper boundary and the glue. They are nothing like Maz Kanata – I didn't have any problem with Maz in the cinema.

I need TFA in digital form to file a proper frame-by-frame complaint about her. ;)

Personally, I'm going to wait for blu ray, since that's my preferred form of media for home viewing.

At least the DVD and Blu ray version of Jabba in Docking Bay 94 looks like Jabba did at the Boonta Eve Podrace in Episode I. He may have been a little on the small side, but at least he didn't look like a rejected background creature from the development of an old Playstation game. The 1997 Special Edition Jabba is the second-worst thing George did to change the original films.

Han not shooting first being the worst!

Absolutely.

All the Jedi Rocks, Vader screams of "NOOOOO" and Hayden Christensen Force Ghosts in the universe aren't as bad as this Jabba and Greedo shooting first.

To bring things back to TFA, this particular line of discussion reminds me of the following:

Haha that made me laugh!

I bought the original Trilogy DVD's which came out about 10 years ago which are great because they have the special editions and thankfully copies of original films. I've not bothered with the BluRays although I have seen the ridiculous changes made for them.

Yeah, each time they releaseed ANH after the first Special Edition the CGI version of Jabba was improved. I'm not sure if this was the most recent version, but it does look quite a bit better than the first SE's version.
