Star Wars: The Clone Wars S4

It was all setup, so it's hard to judge on its own merits. The idea is goofy, but then so are most of the concepts in Star Wars; it's all in the execution.

The animation on Maul's, uh, body was incredible, though. Really stellar stuff.

I have to agree with M-Red (about the lack of quality of the episode at least). What the hell were they thinking with this? To lead off the arc with one of the worst episodes of the series, especially with all of that Darth Maul returns hype leading up to it, was awful. I'm not opposed to the idea of Maul coming back in and of itself if done well, but at least put some effort (from a writing/directing standpoint) into the lead-off episode so it doesn't kick-off the arc on a sour note.

I expected Maul to have spider-legs from the promos, but Shelob/Gollum-hybrid Maul was just terribly conceived. I get that they wanted to make him more pathetic and lost than fearsome, but it was more laughable than anything else. It looks like next week's episode has him back to his old self somewhat with an attitude adjustment and a pair of cyborg legs, so hopefully that will be an improvement. Although, with Savage not being too bright, it almost comes off like angry Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan teaming up for revenge.

Was there any point to the diner scene or to Anakin and Ahsoka randomly walking in immediately afterward? They couldn't have come up with a better way of leading our heroes and villains down the path toward confrontation other than a chance near-encounter? Yeah, yeah, the Force and destiny and all that, but it was just silly.

The production design, CGI, and voice work were of the usual high quality, but there's not much else to recommend this episode, half of which was spent chasing magic dust and with a ridiculous talking tequila worm as Savage's dystopian road trip "pal." It just feels as if they could have skipped this episode entirely and kicked things off with a short intro scene in the next episode.

Just awful.

It's so bad I can't even go into detail with all my thoughts right now. I adore SW, but the bigger problem is I'm not even surprised at this point.

The very idea of resurrecting Maul should have been laughed out of the room. Then to do it in this way is just.....there are no words.

Beyond terrible.

If they were going to do this, I think this was a fine way to do it. It wasn't your vanilla 'resurrection'.

But, as you say, it should've been laughed out of the room.

I do wonder if turning Maul into a crying and crazy wackjob was GL's way of telling the Maul fans fuck you. ;)

Anyone ever read the non-canon Star Wars Visionaries comic that did a return of Darth Maul story? That was a fun story.

That scene did seem out of place. I can appreciate wanting to do a diner scene ala AOTC but it would've probably been better served in a different episode.

Too much set up after 3 weeks (and a year) of waiting. Is set up necessary? We know Savage was searching for Maul. We don't need an episode of a talking snake taking him through a sand storm to get to Maul.

Maul himself was a little too nutty and weird for my tastes. I want old school Maul.

I also thought it strange having a Normal Dex type diner on the outer rim like that. Not so outer by the looks of it.

A couple of things confused me here. Mother Telzin told Savage that Maul was in the Outer Rim so naturally we see Savage in a diner on Coruscant?

Like Saul says, I don't think it was on Coruscant. Ahsoka said something about being "this far out" or words to that effect. And surely Coruscant can't be the only planet in the Republic that has urban environments.

I suppose but it's still absolutely contrived that Anakin and Ahsoka would just happen to be at that diner at an ass backwards planet.

Everybody's gotta be somewhere. What's contrived isn't that they were there, it's that their presence there didn't seem to serve any story purpose. But after two weeks in a row without a single good-guy character appearing, I can live with the cameo.

When Savage landed on Lotho Minor, I immediately thought he had landed on Ceti Alpha V by mistake.

I was expecting him to find KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!

you know, this latest ridiculousness with Maul is why I just can't get into this show. The continuity issues, from this, to Ahsoka, to Anakin's character, etc.

This show just does not match up with the prequels. It's like watching alternate reality SW.

You know, based on George Lucas's logic, Maul shouldn't even be half as powerful as he used to be. Lucas said that the Force only works through living beings and when Anakin became more machine than man (mostly mechanical limbs and hooked up to a life support machine) his connection with the Force weakened. He was only about 80% as strong as the Emperor.

Maul is literally a half-man who can't even reproduce life. He should at best be only 40% of his previous power.

Well he only lost his legs n' crotch, right?

Surely most of your blood n' guts are in your torso and arms. I'd give him 65% power!

Maul barely used the Force in TPM so I doubt losing half his body even matters. He was always more of a fighter than a wizard.

You don't need to use the Force if you are trying to bash someone's face with a double bladed lightsaber.

His big horns compensate for his loss.
