Of course it's anecdotal. But time and Box Office will bear out it's accuracy.
Yes it will. Look, I'm sure that yes, there are fans and regular Joes out there who are pissed about TLJ. I have no doubt in my mind that is true. I put a lot of the Solo box office woes on the six months between TLJ and Solo, not the quality of either movie.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, "Marvel does it and it works." Marvel also has 80 years of history across multiple titles and a huge amount of backstory to cull from. The general moviegoing public can go and see a Captain America movie or an Iron Man movie or a Black Panther movie or a Captain Marvel movie. There's a lot of options and they're milking them for all its worth.
But with Star Wars, prior to Disney, you had six movies and some books and comic books (that are being drawn from, BTW). But the average movie goer may not go see a movie about Ulic Qel-Droma or Nomi Sunrider. There has to be a connection for the audience, at least at first. You had Han, Luke and Leia in TFA and TLJ passing the torch to a new generation. You had a ton of nostalgia pushing Rogue One.
For Solo, while its enjoyable, is it possible that perhaps it wasn't the movie people wanted to see? Is it possible that people have really connected to Harrison Ford as Han Solo and that someone coming in and playing that role, no matter who is was, just wasn't going to fill the seats? I liked Solo but that does not mean I don't think it was an ill-conceived maneuver for LFL. I never liked the idea. I figured it'd be fun and entertaining, but I always thought it would be a lesser work. And while, again, I think that yes, people did not like TLJ, I bet its far fewer than you actually believe.
But, again, we will wait until December 2019 to see for sure. I could be wrong. But again, if the brand can survive Attack of the Clones? I think it can survive just about anything.
