If it's stuff from the Extended Universe people are talking about, that has been de-canonized by Lucasfilm, as The Force Awakens made sure of that. Frankly, I never paid any attention to the novels. Like Star Trek, if it didn't happen on screen, it's not official.

(BTW, when he was first mentioned by Vos, I assumed it would be Jabba, and when we first saw him in his hood, I though he might be a young Snoke. Then I was just blinded by the audacity of it all.)
I didn't think it was Jabba as they mentioned he was another player in the criminal underworld. When I first saw the hologram I thought it would be Sidious and that Q'ira was one of the operatives. It being Maul does make sense if you have followed the shows and comics but i could see people who haven't seen/read those would be confused. I just assumed knowledge of his death (which was greatly exaggerated) would be known by the majority by now.
I imagine the Boba Fett movie they announced will follow up on this. Perhaps even the Obi Wan movie.

You're missing out on some good Star Trek material thinking like that. I was once like you.

Anyone who thinks Maul should figure into an Obi-Wan movie, or for that matter anyone who has any ideas at all about what should be in an Obi-Wan movie, really needs to see the episode of Rebels called "Twin Suns."

Just ignore that. That was Maul’s brother, Paul. :)

As someone who read and re-read Splinter of the Mind's Eye a lot as a kid, I get a kick out of every time Mimban gets some play.

I saw it yesterday and it was good but not great and oddly felt less like a Star Wars movie but just a film set in the Star Wars universe (if you get me). This was the first time we have had a Star Wars movie without the force or the Jedi/Sith playing a sizable role in the movie's story or theme. Rogue One had Vader and also one of the main heroes was very force sensitive but here it's just not mentioned apart from the seeing Maul. I have to admit, Star Wars seriously loses part of it's appeal when such themes are left behind IMO. The story started slow but I did enjoy the heist parts and the final arc of the movie was quite entertaining...

Alden Ehrenreich was fine as Solo but not great and that's an issue when your movie is an origin tale about the main character of the film. Alden at the end did seem to morph more into Ford's Solo of Episode 4-7 but unlike what Pine did with Kirk for ST, I just felt very little nostalgia for Solo during this movie. I thought Glover as Lando was an excellent choice who right from the bat adopted enough of Billy Dee's inflections and moulded with his own take on the character. Paul Bettany needed more screen time to flesh out his villian but did good work with what he was given. Emilia herself was fine but never great and I was surprised she survived the movie but I can't say I'm keen to see her again BUT...

Darth Maul, yes please. I don't watch the cartoons though I'm aware of his character arc and while at the time (the cartoons) I felt it was stupid, when I saw him in Solo, I was HELL YES GIVE ME MORE. I hope this was a set up not for a Solo sequel but the Obi Wan movie to come.

Solo was a solid enough film but I don't think casuals will care much and hardcore SW fans might be mixed on it. I am so curious to what the original movie was like pre Howard.

One thing I really appreciated was that the Kessel run was made possible by the capability of the Falcon and its L3 Nav computer, not by Solo's skill. This matches with Solo always saying the Falcon did it in 12 parsecs, not that he did it.

Interesting take, I hadn't thought of it like that. I have to admit to feeling a little underwhelmed by the whole Kessel bit, it seemed a little disjointed.

I was thinking about that during the movie and was waiting for them to flip it by having someone else fly the Falcon during the Kessel Run and Han just takes the credit for it, but making it possible because of L3's navicomputer was great, too.

Am I correct in assuming that the Falcon either has more than one escape pod, or Han added another one later?

The pod is ejected in Solo, thus causing the Falcon to assume the 'pincer' shape we're all familiar with (the pod was located in between the pincers). Yet, IIRC, another pod is used in TFA.

Yeah, there is a smaller pod near the back of the ship. I'm sure it was added later, but we have no idea when. 40 years is a long time.

B+

Not great, but still a fun movie with characters that I liked. All the actors did a really good job. The kid did a good Han Solo. L3 was a riot. Loved the Maul reveal at the end. Was the Needles reference supposed to be the one from Back to the Future 3?

So it was Kasden's son who brought in Maul, he adored the character in TPM, and what they did with him in Clone Wars and Rebels

Lando added that centre escape pod according to dialogue earlier in the film, it isn't something that comes with the YT-1300. This is backed up in the visual guide,

I'm guessing the escape pods mentioned ANH and seen in TLJ are the standard/stock YT-1300 escape pods.
