First impression:

That is my favorite Star Wars movie of the new era. I really wonder if this and Last Jedi should have switched places in the release schedule.

Here is a bit of a longer review now that I'm home and not typing on my phone. Now to go back within the thread to get some clarity on the ending scene, unless that wasn't who I thought it was.

This was my favorite Star Wars film of the Disney Era. We got a fun heist movie/adventure with characters that are either pretty well developed or just adding to said characters backstory and mythos. Going in, no we probably didn't need to know how Han got his name, or how he took ownership of the Falcon but those questions were answered as part of a fun story and a very entertaining 2+ hours.

There were two scenes that really sold this movie for me. The first was the train scene in the mountains. The second was the Kessel run and a fun ship to ship chase scene. These were entertaining, and I was on the edge of my seat just excited to be watching something like this on the big screen again. I mean we really haven't seen much of the exterior Millennium Falcon, but here we got it in spades and it was fun to see that ship fly like that again.

I know The Last Jedi might have left a bad taste in some people's mouths, and I wonder if this movie would be better recieved had this been switched with that movie last year. I also know there were complications with the shooting schedule and if this movie would actually be ready. In terms of that, I say they did a great job getting this movie ready to go and making it as fun as it was. I wouldn't mind a sequel, especially considering some of the ending scenes that almost took me out of the movie because it left me a bit confused, but not enough to diminish the whole thing.

Saw it again for a second time, took more of it in. Have to say it's definitely a movie that almost requires the viewer to be up on Star Wars lore, really enhances the movie if you are, but can tell it would be off putting, or even confusing in some spots if someone isn't.

Teras Kasi was a cool reference, I am guessing a few people may know that from atleast from the old PlayStation game (or not..game was not that good).

Corellia is basically the Michigan of SW universe. I always thought Corellia wasn't *that* bad of a place. Coronet, Kor Vella, etc. Granted my knowledge of Corellia is limited to a few EU sources, I guess the industrial areas are the roughest, or in near poverty.

Maul being included brings up all kinds of issues, even for those that followed the Clone Wars, and Rebels. I liked seeing him, just have a hard time thinking Palpatine would be okay with Maul being alive, since revenge would be the first thing on Maul's mind. Although a Maul survival movie/mini-series would be interesting.

The movie makes me wish Star Wars Galaxies was still around, pre-NGE of course.

So we've hit Star Wars Fatigue already. Thought it would take until Bucket Head's movie to reach that point but there you go.

Damn Solo was amazing, I loved it

Nah we haven’t, or at least I personally haven’t.

Shame it is isn't doing so well. I think it's the best Disney Star Wars movie easily.
Speaking of which, it broke with tradition with not having C-3PO and R2 in it. I would have had them at the bar they first met Lando. Perhaps Antilles wanted a drink.

While C-3PO wasn’t in it, Anthony Daniels did have a cameo, I forgot to look for him however.

And you didn’t answer my question regarding how much of these other shows are required viewing.

This is the first movie where it would have helped.

Rebels and Clone Wars however are both amazing shows (after a season) and I recommend them.

I’m sure they’ll briefly explain how he survived in whatever movie he appears fully in. They know not everyone has seen the shows.

Well, I looked at this thread and still don't really understand the whole Darth Maul thing so I'm going to ask. I haven't seen Clone Wars, Rebels, or read the EU stuff. Was that Darth Maul, and if it was, how the heck did he survive that fall. Also, I'm a little confused as to the timeline of these movies. Does Solo take place a few years after Revenge of the Sith? Do Darths age?

I wouldn't mind an explaination on the whole "How do you become a darth" thing. Darth Maul isn't up there in terms of basic questions I have about the Star Wars franchise (LIke the origins of the Force and who the heck is Yoda exactly, like what species), but after this movie, it got closer.

Maul survived by basically being dumped into a trash hauler and wound up on Lothal Minor (i think...fuzzy on this, been awhile.) A rated R Maul survival movie would be cool, and total fan service, but I would enjoy it if done well. TBH in 1999 I never thought to see Maul in live action again, but here we are.

So we have Darth Maul, The Maw (Kessel Run,) and in legends the dark Jedi Maw who was coincidentally also cut in half

I loved The Last Jedi - I liked Solo, but it wasn't in the same league as TLJ or Rogue One. It was certainly much better than The Force Awakens though.

I, sadly don't.

The end of the movie is around 9 years after ROTS, which is around 10 years before ANH.

If you prefer to watch a video then to read, mind you it tells you about everything about him that has happened up to 9 months ago, so spoilers.

I really liked Solo, far more than I thought I would. Alden Ehrenreich did a good job, though he lacks the swagger that Harrison Ford had. Donald Glover was a great Lando though. Emilia Clarke and Ehrenreich had great chemistry. Woody Harrelson was great, though that kind of goes without saying. This was an all around fun adventure and everything a Star Wars movie should be.

It's hard to believe that Disney was able to hit the mark with this movie and Rogue One, yet miss it so completely with TLJ.

Kudos to Star Wars/Disney for incorporating elements from the CW and Rebels series into the movie. I don't understand why the MCU movies couldn't do that with AoS.

I realize that Solo isn't bringing in the numbers that the execs hoped it would, and that's a shame. Solo is a worthy addition to the Star Wars universe.

Only because TFA was the first Star Wars movie in over 10 years.

Other than the cartoon, of course.

Yeah, I didn't expect it, based on looking at the MCU/AoS thing as a template. So far nothing in the 19 MCU films, as far as I know, requires AoU to be understood. Now this makes me think they could put Phil Coulson in Avengers Endgame!

The Maul bit seems a bit tacked on, after I have had time to digest it all, not really sure if Maul was needed. Hopefully future anthology films will explain it better.

Han's line of I don't belong to anyone (don't remember the exact quote) and then later "My father built these freighters" ...wait, what?

Looking forward to the hopeful sequel involving Jabba, which is what most want to see.

Based on this film, I think Maul is there to provide a face for the reason why Qi'ra is trapped in the Crimson Dawn and cannot go with Han, even if she gets rid of Dryden Vos. Maul is simply too powerful for her to refuse.

I'd assume his parents died sometime between him being old enough to remember them and him being 19-or-so at the beginning of the film (probably when Han was around 10 and started running scams on the street). There could be something to him not using his birth name with the recruiter, or he might've just fallen out of the habit.
