I give this movie a B; I liked it slightly better than TLJ. While I initially thought I enjoyed The Last Jedi, in retrospect, it had major flaws. Solo, being a standalone Star Wars film, was just a filler, IMHO, and I didn't know what to expect.

The mediocre plot revolves around a young man who, after being separated from his girlfriend, trains to be a pilot for the Empire, meets a Wookie, becomes a deserter, joins a smuggler who works for a crime lord who works for a Sith lord, and gets double crossed a number of times. (I didn't get the reference to Crimson Viper and a bunch of pirates.) Oh yeah, he does the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs too.

The end of the movie is around 9 years after ROTS, which is around 10 years before ANH.

If you prefer to watch a video then to read, mind you it tells you about everything about him that has happened up to 9 months ago, so spoilers.

Interesting. Thanks for that. Kind of makes me hope we do see him again in a future movie.

Got back a bit ago, came out really enjoying it. I'd say it was better than Rogue One and The Last Jedi, liked it more than I thought I would.

Donald Glover was good as Lando, this guy was good as Han Solo (not trying to do a Harrison Ford because, who could?) and Woody Harrellson was great.

But, yeah, that was fun. I really liked it.

I saw it this afternoon in a surprisingly small theatre (AMC) that was less than half full. It was the only one in which the movie was playing in 3D, as well. Doesn't bode well, me thinks.

Anyway, it was fun from the usual nostalgia/Easter Eggs perspective. The origin of the name "Solo" was pretty lame. I liked Donald Glover's Lando, and laughed at his initial mispronunciation of Han (along with the following back and forth). Han speaking Wookie (Wookese?) was a bit corny. And are we to believe that our beloved Chewie .. um... uses people as chewies? Wasn't a fan of that.

Maul's cameo completely took me out of the movie, though, because I had no idea he had been resurrected/saved. I'm sure most of the viewing audience won't, either.

I won't be going back for a second viewing, though.

It's playing on so many screens, atleast in my area. Two theaters in my city, on three screens at one theater, and on 4 on another (granted that particular theater is large.)

Thursday premiere was the usual fan crowd, my second viewing today wasn't that many people there. Memorial Day weekend too, so will be interesting to see the numbers on this one.

I enjoyed the movie but can see how its appeal could be limited to the heavier fandom core. Disney’s probably going to have to reassess its strategy with the Star Wars franchise.

I’m amazed that some people don’t know that Maul was revived. Sure the very casual person may not know (or care) that he’s back but people who say they don’t know and use sites like this? Seems very unlikely.

Not everyone has seen Rebels or Clone Wars. Hell, I hardly remembered those shows even existed until I read this thread.

It's a movie that expects, or assumes you know certain things in SW lore. I actually like that, but the casual movie goer may not. By comparison, Rogue One was more palatable to casual fans Death Star, Tarkin, Vader etc.

I have to say it's nice to hear and see certain things that was once only referenced, or apart of EU, as a fan I eat that up.

My read is that Clone Wars and/or Rebels isn't widely viewed. I think Rebels averaged around a million viewers on broadcast. I'm not sure what the streaming numbers were. Even on a site dedicated to Sci-Fi/Fantasy media, such as this one, a million viewers is not a very large pool. I believe Clone Wars had more viewers, but Maul was only in a handful of episodes and it's not difficult to imagine that casual fans of CW may have missed them.

While we're on the subject, for those who've not seen Clone Wars or Rebels, both are very, very good shows.

My point is that people who go to sites like this and other sites must be aware of these show’s existence an news about Maul would have been very prominent at the time.
It does go to show you why Marvel doesn’t do something similar in their model with acknowledging the existence of Inhumans or the Netflix heroes in the movies as they fear it’ll cause confusion. It’s probabky why Coulson is still considered dead in the movies. We’ll be getting similar responses if he was to appear in Infinity War.

Carida! Coronet. Mimban! ( Though I had no idea it was supposed to be Mimban and didn't have any idea Mimban had been in the film until reading the cast list in the end credits. ) The Lando books! Glee Anselm. Teras kasi!!

Also, nice to see Bossk getting a shout-out. Though an actual appearance in the sequel would be better... :techman:

I liked the beginning with the text info giving the audience a little info of the status of the Galaxy. It reminded me of Blade Runner.

I'm aware of those shows' existence. I don't watch them, however, and as such I don't follow any threads with "SW Rebels" in the title. Hell, I don't even know 99% of what happened in the EU, whether it's canon or not (thanks to this film), nor do I really care.

This is a Trek forum, by the way, so expecting everyone to be familiar with Star Wars lore is misplaced.

It actually reminded me more of the crawl at the beginning of some sci fi franchise, whose name eludes me at the moment...

It was also nice to see a Rodian in Enfys' crew. The ST so far has avoided including new examples of old-school SW alien races, for whatever reason. And another one of the Enfys gang was a Tognath as seen in Rogue One, that was a nice bit of continuity.

Haha. It is a bit different to that as it wasn’t a scrawling title crawl done to the Star Wars music. It was a block of text that faded in done to ominous music. I didn’t get “Star Wars” from that.

I've been a big booster of increasing cross-pollination between the ABC, Netflix, and film incarnations of the MCU, but I thought putting crime-lord Maul into Solo was incredibly audacious, and way beyond anything I would've done with the MCU. In those cases, I figured either they'd replace background characters so it wouldn't make a difference to the movie-exclusive audience (for instance, having May and Fitzsimmons operating the Helicarrier in Age of Ultron rather than the crew from Avengers 1), or there would be other characters that would need to be brought up to speed to cover for exposition to the audience (like Coulson coming back, or any TV heroes crossing shows or going to the movies).

I never would've said the MCU should have, say, a scene with Coulson and just Hill or Fury where everyone knows what his deal is and no explanation is given, except for Coulson to turn to the camera and say, "Hey, remember me? I got stabbed through the heart and died in that other movie? Well, this cameo has been a laugh and a half. See ya!" the way Maul appeared, and they didn't even let the audience that wasn't clued into the cartoons assume he was just another alien of the same species by having him wave his saber around and quoting "Duel of the Fates." I can only assume they actually were planning on other Solo-related movies where they could play out Maul's resurrection on the big screen and this was supposed to be a tease for another film along with a reward to the bigger fans.

(BTW, when he was first mentioned by Vos, I assumed it would be Jabba, and when we first saw him in his hood, I though he might be a young Snoke. Then I was just blinded by the audacity of it all.)

I did, because each card was in the same style of the card for "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."
