Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!
Was this posted in about 2002 or so, and was pulled through some time vortex and has emerged here and now? From when someone might actually give a shit perhaps?
Dropping into this forum sometimes makes me feel like I've egressed ten years to a world trapped in ambergris. People are hating the Star Wars prequels, there's arguments about whether Star Wars or Star Trek ships would win in a fight (with reference to good old stardestroyer.net), I almost get the feeling if I wandered into the Voyager forum I'd see at least one thread bashing Berman and Braga.
And the prequels? Mostly pretty - if gaudy - mostly good music - if diminishing returns - some wooden acting and basically underthought scripts (not that the original trilogy was consitently excellent on either front). They're not great movies, but if they weren't Star Wars people would have forgotten about them already.
I mean, I don't see a lot of threads decrying how terrible Mission to Mars and Red Planet were. People will still rain on The Phantom Menace's parade, but it's a toss up if they've even heard of Wing Commander.
Also, I don't buy the logic the Star Wars films are good 'in spite of' Lucas.
Yes, Irvin Kershner directed Empire Strikes Back. He also directed Robocop 2.
Lucas
looks like he's consistently a problem because when we're evaluating people narrowly based on their participation in the Star Wars franchise, he's one of the few people to work in all of them. Irvin Kershner's a golden boy with his single credit but his actual career is hardly as lopsided.
What I'm saying is: Lucas is just this guy, you know? He's been involved in making some movies that were pretty terrible and other movies that were pretty good. He doesn't have a spotless record and criticisms about him losing his touch may have a lot of truth to them but decrying him as basically never being any good doesn't really square with any broadly favourable opinion of his earlier work.
