STAR WARS PREQUELS - a love/hate relationship

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

I'd rather watch all of the prequels than waste another twenty seconds watching one of those "reviews."

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

You know whats even more sad, people spending the time and energy making these reviews. It's almost pathological.

I take it by your name you are a fanboi? Sorry, I know the truth can hurt sometimes. The prequels are crap on so many different levels..and this coming from a diehard SW fan.

BTW: here is a rendering I did recently:

I may be a fan, but I know crap when I see it.

It made me laugh, so it wasn't time wasted.

Sounds like he just hates Plinkett's reviews. Can't say I blame him – the few minutes I spent listening to his nails-on-chalkboard irritating voice were some of the most excruciating I can remember. I'd rather listen to a review by Ahmed Best doing the Jar Jar voice than whatever it is that he does.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

I'm not one that "hates" the Star Wars prequels. They're truly awful movies, but I've seen plenty of those. I'd probably have to be a Star Wars fan to care enough to give them anything more than indifference, and I'm not. I did get some enjoyment out of those reviews, even though a number of points were lost on me since I can barely remember anything that happened in any of the Star Wars prequels. The TNG reviews on the same website were more interesting to me for that reason.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

I've always wondered why it seems to be those who accuse others of being "fanbois" who come across as the most desperate and fanboyish people in the room.

Nice rendering, though.

ETA: Gep Malakai has it right. I'm not a prequel defender (or "apologist," as some "purists" like to use), but yes, I would much rather watch six hours of video gamey CGI backgrounds and wooden acting than watch even a minute of one of Plinkett's reviews.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

Was this posted in about 2002 or so, and was pulled through some time vortex and has emerged here and now? From when someone might actually give a shit perhaps?

Star Wars fanboy doesn't like the prequel movies!?!?! OMFG!!!!!

Hey this just in, I hear some other group of fans aren't happy that show Firefly was cancelled. And wait a minute, some other folk think Superman IV sucked balls

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

Someone not liking the Star Wars prequels, it must be a day which ends with a "Y".

Hang around here enough this topic will return.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

I love those reviews; just discovered them yesterday thanks to FlyingSpaghetini MOnster. They are quite funny and yet also surprisingly literate in terms of the criticism. The weird serial-killer crap I can live without though.

And yes, the prequels (and the "Special Editions") are awful films. A New Hope really does appear to be a fluke and Empire good in spite of his (Lucas') involvement. I wouldn't say that these films ruined my childhood however. I did blow money on theatre tickets and then the DVDs and wasted more hours of my life watching the making of crap. I don't know why it took so long for me to become intolerant of them. Could be my inner Star Wars fanboy was too pre-eminent.

Now I only have the letterboxed DVDs of the original films on the shelf. I still only watch the Luke parts of Return of the Jedi though; the Endor stuff just bores me to tears and Ford seems like he's putting in a token amount of effort as a favour to Lucas. I did recently watch the Special Editions with the Rifftrax commentary - that's the only way I could even consider doing that again.

Dropping into this forum sometimes makes me feel like I've egressed ten years to a world trapped in ambergris. People are hating the Star Wars prequels, there's arguments about whether Star Wars or Star Trek ships would win in a fight (with reference to good old stardestroyer.net), I almost get the feeling if I wandered into the Voyager forum I'd see at least one thread bashing Berman and Braga.

And the prequels? Mostly pretty - if gaudy - mostly good music - if diminishing returns - some wooden acting and basically underthought scripts (not that the original trilogy was consitently excellent on either front). They're not great movies, but if they weren't Star Wars people would have forgotten about them already.

I mean, I don't see a lot of threads decrying how terrible Mission to Mars and Red Planet were. People will still rain on The Phantom Menace's parade, but it's a toss up if they've even heard of Wing Commander.

Also, I don't buy the logic the Star Wars films are good 'in spite of' Lucas.

Yes, Irvin Kershner directed Empire Strikes Back. He also directed Robocop 2.

Lucas looks like he's consistently a problem because when we're evaluating people narrowly based on their participation in the Star Wars franchise, he's one of the few people to work in all of them. Irvin Kershner's a golden boy with his single credit but his actual career is hardly as lopsided.

What I'm saying is: Lucas is just this guy, you know? He's been involved in making some movies that were pretty terrible and other movies that were pretty good. He doesn't have a spotless record and criticisms about him losing his touch may have a lot of truth to them but decrying him as basically never being any good doesn't really square with any broadly favourable opinion of his earlier work.

Ugh, Wing Commander. Now that was a travesty of a movie. Outside of the opening credits sequence, it was absolutely nothing to offer. As a fan of the games, it was especially offensive to me.

Maybe I should do a long-winded anal-retentive nitpicky review of it in my most annoying voice possible...

hey there thanks!
I wrote this for you on the other thread.

The story is that Mike from RLM thought his own voice was boring (you see him normal on their Half in the Bag weekly show) so he gave his reviews an edge by creating the voice and the character that resulted. He started with Star Trek Generations, and moved on form there. Those reviews were about a half hour to forty minutes each. I remember when he announced he was moving on to the Phantom Menace, and I knew it would be a hit, and keep in mind that the Trek reviews were still not terribly popular, but when his massive 70-minute Phantom Menace review came out, it not only exceeded all my expectations, but it also scored positive tweets by some famous people, and, with all the stars lined up, that review did go viral in a big way. The character being a killer is funny and gives it an edge and has always been a part of the reviews right from Generations, and he's not going to sell out just because these reviews are longer and more popular.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

This thread is shaping up nicely, and I predict it will produce a meaningful exchange of ideas.

I love the Star Wars prequels!

I am a fairly picky eater when it comes to my entertainment diet. I won't pay to see a movie unless I am sure to enjoy it. I rarely watch TV anymore either. I also think I'm a fairly intelligent guy. I read a lot, and keep up with current events. I do my best to be cultured. Yet I have a confession to make. From my experience online over the past twelve years I have learned that this is something to be ashamed of. But I don't care. I accept myself for who I am.

I love the prequels. In fact, I like them better than the original trilogy.

I am a big Star Wars fan. Not as big as I am a Lord of the Rings fan, but close. There was even a time from 2002 through 2005 that I was more of a Star Wars fan than a Star Trek fan. As someone who has been watching Trek since he was in diapers, that is saying a lot. I have been told that no true Star Wars fan likes the prequels. (Some might claim that true fans only like the original movie, much less the original trilogy.) But I feel the prequels get an undeserved bad rap.

The dialogue is no clunkier than the originals. The plot is no less crazy than that of the originals. The CGI is no goofier than the stop-motion animation used in the originals. And midichlorians are simply misunderstood. All you haters, look at the prequels objectively for a moment. Sure there is Jar-Jar, and "I hate sand" but there is also a sprawling Greek tragedy showcasing the decline of a society mirrored by the fall of a single man.

So thank you George Lucas, for ignoring the naysayers, for pressing ahead with your vision, for making some truly beautiful films, and for fulfilling the anticipation of my childhood.

:wtf:

There are so many things wrong with that statement...

...even though it may actually be true.

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

Now see, of late I don't even find myself very impressed by "A New Hope", errr Star Wars redone, or not. I tend to yawn while watching Threepio and Artoo wandering about and I ask myself: why is this movie supposed to be so great?

Is that heretical?

Re: I hate the STAR WARS PREQUELS!!!

Didn't we just do this... like twice in the last few months? Yet this is still going to go on for 50 pages anyway. lol

And of course there'll probably be another 50 page SR thread popping up any minute now....

Re: I love the Star Wars prequels!

Now, George, quit sock-puppeting. We know it's you!
