Sounds like just the kind of lazy title Marvel would come up with.

And Del Rey.

So no...their needs to be something else to move the Force forward. Something more than that light side only Jedi. There needs to be balance in the Force.

The Jedi support balance. It is the Sith and their ilk who threaten the balance. That Luke's order was destroyed by someone who turned to the dark side really only reinforces this, it hardly indicates that being too oriented to the light side is a problem.

The movie will end with BOTH Luke and Leia dead, Rey's training left painfully incomplete (and her teetering on the edge of the Dark Side, esp. when her newly unmasked mom - Phasma - is the one who kills Luke after Kylo Ren botches it up), the Resistance totally steamrolled (Chewie and one/both classic droids dead too?!?) and the First Order (led by Snoke, aka Darth Plagueis) seemingly on an unstoppable course to reconquering the entire galaxy. It's going to be so much of a downer ending that shellshocked fans will stagger out of the theater wondering "How the hell are our new heroes going to turn THIS around with only one film to go??"

Honestly, I find that title rather meh. But then, my initial reaction to The Force Awakens was that it was a rather bland and uninspired title, but it kind of grew on me by the time the movie was released. I'm sure this one will grow on me by Christmas too.

True. But do the Jedi, as currently trained and organized, represent the best way to maintain balance. I feel like the prequel trilogy, for all its flaws, showed that the Jedi have very much lost there way. Something new, very much like the Jedi only less disconnected from the reality and, for lack of a better word, humanity of the galaxy may be in order.

as some other have said, Jedi is both Singular and Plural.

Only real way to know for sure is to wait for an official translation into a language where it is more obvious based on grammar.

Anyways, Luke is referred to as 'the last jedi' a few time in Episode 7.

According to an article on IGN theorizing about what the title means, the translation on the Brazilian SW Twitter seemed to indicate it was singular male, but that was removed later. The writer of the article said that it wasn't clear if that was actually official,or if the people who translated it did it that way all on their own.

Nah... I don't think so.

I don't think that many of our heroes are going to meet their demise, particularly C3P0 and R2. They are the only constants in all movies (including R-One!) because it has been said they are the ones "telling" the tale. Unless Rian Johnson ignores that, they'll make it through.

Which is in absolutely no way the only viable alternative. I never said anything about being half-dark. The gulf between being emotionally cloistered, as the Jedi largely were, and utterly ruled by your animal passions is not a divide but a spectrum. And learning to cut yourself from almost all emotion and connection can be just as dangerous as selfishness, greed and avarice. I think we see examples of what the Jedi could be, in Obi-Wan, Yoda and a few others. Qui-Gonn may even be a bridge too far, but I think he's a great example of the kind of boots-on-the-ground, living among the people, seeing life as it truly is kind of Jedi that there seemed to be way too few of.

I could go on, but I'm not sure it's worth it. It's mostly just a jumbled mess in my head anyway. But this idea that the only two options are Jedi-as-we-know-them and Sith is frighteningly wrong. The Jedi can be wrong too. The depth of their misjudgements are born out by the very existence of the Empire. It may very well be, especially if he has lost his students once to a fallen apprentice, that Luke may not be so sure the old Jedi way is so great anymore. We'll have to see if the movie intends to play with any of those ideas.

After all, it could just be a snazzy title.

I like the title. I think the title refers to Luke since the title crawl in Episode VII said he was the last Jedi. Since he will presumably be training Rey that will of course change. I just hope he makes it to the last film without becoming a force ghost.

I think the emotion thing is exaggerated. The Jedi preach only against certain emotions - those aligned with the dark side.

I spoke of an option not included in the above. ( I was initially responding to Ithekro's post so I was thinking primarily of light side vs. dark side. Sorry. )

The Jedi can be wrong too. The depth of their misjudgements are born out by the very existence of the Empire.

Setting aside the fact that their wrongness is here defined purely by outcome, which smacks of fallacy, misjudgements do not constitute an open door to declare them wrong about everything. Specifically, the very existence of the Empire does not mean that they were wrong about the Force.

Since the logo is now red it must be to signify the dark side. So the dark side will be taking center stage but will it be that Kylo and Snoke get some satisfaction after Rey defeated Kylo? Will Luke be dabbling in the dark side to bring balance to the force? Does the red in the title signify that Luke the last Jedi will die by the end of the film? So many possibilities.
