Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

- Having Han say "It's true. All of it. The Dark side, the Jedi..." was nice, and has me wondering why in the heck the Force disappeared in 30 years if Finn and Rey know only "stories" of back then.
The rest of the galaxy didn't watch the same cuts of ESB and ROTJ that we did. For them, the Jedi were gone at Order 66, and that was that.

Safe to assume that most folks under the age of 60 know very little of the Jedi. I doubt the Empire was teaching Jedi 101 in schools.
But you'd think that if the Emperor and Vader were defeated at Endor, and the good guys prevailed, that Luke would start training Jedi again and Leia and the other leaders would form a new government. Guess not. Would there still be a Resistance 30 years later?

I'm starting to wonder if Rey isn't in possession of the Millennium Falcon at the beginning of the film and that will be the big reveal of her origins when it rises up out of the sand to assist in their escape. If she is in fact the Solo/Organa lovechild or has some other link before her introduction on Jakku, perhaps she stole it to escape the "destiny" Luke and the others trying to impose on her.

I'm having a hard time squaring the circle otherwise considering the shot of Han and Chewie from the last trailer acting as if they've not seen the Falcon in quite some time.

What little we know suggests that there is a new Republic (or equivalent) but that the remnants of the Empire managed to pull themselves back together following a few years of heavy losses and formed a loose confederation under various warlords and moffs. The First Order is one, currently on the rise and expanding quickly. The Resistance is trying to contain that expansion.

I can't really blame Luke though, from everything we see of the relationship between the Jedi and Sith, and the cost to the galaxy, they were more trouble than they were worth, so perhaps he thought he'd just let it all finally die out. As to the resistance, I'd guess it depends on whether they're initially resisting the First Order, or a corrupt "New Republic" style government. Let's be honest, there had to have been plenty of people, and planets, in positions of power that benefited greatly from the Empire and are still in there causing problems. I doubt they'd want to fully give up all they'd gained.

Well, the people who are marketing this film know their audience. This is the same audience who will preorder video games. For that is what is happening here, fans are preording tickets to a movie. Like in the world of video games, the quality of this product is unknown. Preordering is a matter of faith. Star Wars has for many fans kept the faith. I hope for the fans that this faith is not misplaced. I hope the film is as good or even as great as they would like it to be.

I'll hazard a guess and bet that preordering tickets for films was a thing in the roadshow era of Hollywood back in the 50's, '60's, and early 70's before it died.

This is JJ we're talking about.
So? The Khan implausible denial fiasco aside, nuTrek trailers were fucking perfect. So was the second TFA teaser, in fact, it was better than this one.

Less is more.
"I like men with small d***" - said no woman ever.

Go see the film if you want the story.
I don't want the story, I'd just like some context to the imagery.

Don't get me wrong, I did like what I've seen. A lot. It just doesn't feel enough.

^ I meant in the sense that JJ is very coy with his trailers.Remember the marketing for Star Trek Into Darkness and Super 8? We knew next to nothing from what JJ allowed released, and JJ would comment "go see the film".

Also, I wanted to ask:

Was I the only one who noticed this?

I really dislike that shot for some reason. It doesn't feel like Star Wars.
I on the contrary love seeing a new take on everything. Remember the shaky cam and zoom-ins in AOTC? Star Wars did that before BSG (to make the CGI shots feel more like actual filmed footage), and I loved it.

It's definitely not what I expected. However, it was surprisingly effective. It plays on our awareness of it's impact ... the last time Ford, Hamill and Fisher were in a Star Wars movie I was -1. It didn't need to be overly bombastic. They know how big this is.

Consider where we were post prequels. I don't think any of us would have guessed we'd be lucky enough to get this.

My fav bit was the cut from Kylo Ren doing a force head pressure thing on that guy to the Falcon and the TIE fighters... the music. Just happy. :techman:

SERIOUSLY! That last but with the main SW theme has me tearing up almost every time - SO classic but SO melancholy!

That view of the hyperspace jump, though, does resemble how some ships are depicted when travelling at lightspeed in The Clone Wars and Rebels, so J.J. and the producers might have been deliberately aiming to create visual continuity across the Star Wars universe. It just looks new and unusual for a lightspeed jump in a live-action Star Wars film.

Well, it's not like this depiction of hyperspace is anything new. It's been a swirling blue-white vortex since the OT. Modern VFX just make it easier for filmmakers to make it look a little more dynamic now.

It's just the first time we've seen it from outside the ship in the films. So yeah, it's an old, established look but it just appears different because we're not inside the Falcon in that shot and watching it speed by the windows (and we're following the ship as it zips by the camera).

No, it's not.

My default position on successful cinematography for computer generated images has become "How would we capture this if we were shooting practically?" If it fails the test of plausibility it ruins the magic. I for one also didn't care for the shakeycam stuff in AotC or the Falcon footage from the previous trailer.

What it comes down to though is that, for me, Hyperspace is much more interesting from inside the ship as a netherworld we don't understand. Showing me a tunnel of timey-wimey-spacey-wacey stuff makes it all just feel like a cosmic highway. We see ships go in, we see them come out, we see the dazzling spectacle from inside the cockpit but this somehow diminishes the whole ordeal.

I admit that shot does put holes in my argument though.

This is Yavin. It has to be. Han and Fin must have went there looking for Luke.

Okay so in this shot, we can't see Chewie.

And in the scene where Rey looks up and is crying, if you pause and look to screen right, you can CLEARLY see long wispy dark fur.

Damn.

Lol

I didn't even think of the time vortex thing before you said it. That's awesome.
I'm going to edit my original post. But first.
