I'll never get why people complain about Chewie's death. I mean, are all the OT main characters supposed to have permanent main character shields? Did people expect him to die in his sleep? He died to save his best friend's son, and he went out howling at a falling moon. I have never been able to think of a better way for Chewie to go out, personally.
Mara Jade's death was BS, though. That said, I love the old EU, especially post Jedi. It will always be my main SW universe, with the current stuff the alternate universe. I'm sure I'll love TFA, and the new stuff that comes out, but it will never replace the old EU to me. The old EU made me a huge SW fan, more so than even the OT movies, so it will never be surpassed for me. I'm prepared and eager to really enjoy and even love the new movies and new books/universe, but I'll always be an old EU SW guy at heart.
I stuck around until they killed off Mara Jade in the lamest way they could have. I'm glad the EU is no longer canon.
Like I said, i'm very interested in the new stuff, and TFA is probably second only to the first Avengers film when it comes to movies I've been most hyped for before release. But, the new SW universe will never take the place of the old EU for me when it comes to what I consider my favorite SW stuff. Sure, the old EU had some bad stories, but less then some people accuse it (I'd say the vast majority is at least ok, with a huge part of that being good to great). Like I said, the EU is what made me a a big SW fan. My favorite stories in the universe (even over the OT movies) are all old EU. My favorite Star Wars character ever (including movie and EU only characters) is Mara Jade.
That's why the old EU will always represent Star Wars to me. For every Darth Caedus, there were several awesome characters. For every bad book, there were at minimum probably 5 great ones. My favorite books of all time are Star Wars books. I get why people are excited for the new stuff, and I'm excited to. I'm just saying that it will never take the place of the old EU for me. I'm sure we're in for some great stuff, but when I personally think about what SW is, the old EU will always be it for me.

She was also part of the old EU. Now she is decanonized too.
I get that, and I agree, to a certain degree. The Thrawn Trilogy is probably some of the best of the EU (barring some bits) and I enjoyed the Jedi Academy series.
All of that will always have a place in my SW shelf. Lots of fun, exciting stuff there, but the films were what drew me in and kept me there. Favorite moment is still the Battle of Endor in space. Just lots of energy and intensity for my imagination fuel.
I'll probably need to crack some old EU just to stay fresh now![]()
So, with the movie now less then three months away, shouldn't we really be seeing some more publicity now?
I understand that JJ doesn't want stuff spoiled. And sure, it's Star Wars, it kinda sells itself really. But by now, people are getting a bit annoyed I feel. Hardly any real info, and we could use a good trailer.
I can't help but wonder how different he promotion for the movie would be if it wasn't shoved into JJ Abram's mystery box.
I love JJ Abrams stuff, but sometimes his to keep as much of his movies as possible a secret gets annoying. I understand not wanting to spoil things, but there are plenty of movies that are able to do tons of promotional stuff for months before the movie, and yet still leave stuff unrevealed.
