Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I like the old EU a lot, and obviously the Stackpole and Zahn books.

Nobody's taken my copies. I'll still read and enjoy them.

The thing is, without the internet to tell us that JJ is keeping things a secret, we wouldn't even know he was keeping things a secret. ;)
I can't help but wonder how different he promotion for the movie would be if it wasn't shoved into JJ Abram's mystery box.
I have a feeling if Disney wanted stuff out in the public, it would be out in the public.
And, as stated, Star Wars pretty much sells itself. No reason to spend unnecessary money on trailers and promotions

All of this.

It's a new Star Wars movie. You're going. Why do you need to know anything at all in advance?

There's already lots of merchandise out there, from all three eras: PT, OT, and (shall we call it) NT. It's a Star Wars world out there.

I don't like the idea that Star Wars sells itself, even the prequels had several trailers. Disney doesn't seem to understand marketing, the MCU movies are under Marvel and they promote their movies, but Disney's own movies like Tomorrowland, The Lone Ranger and John Carter were marketing disasters and they too should have been to sell themselves.

I'll never get why people complain about Chewie's death. I mean, are all the OT main characters supposed to have permanent main character shields? Did people expect him to die in his sleep? He died to save his best friend's son, and he went out howling at a falling moon. I have never been able to think of a better way for Chewie to go out, personally.

My dislike of Chewie's death is twofold:

1. Chewie is one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars. Regardless of HOW he went (even though I did think it was a little over the top), I was very sad to see him go.
2. His death was rendered meaningless as the reason he died, saving Anakin Solo, was negated just a few books later with the young Jedi's death.

I had more or less tuned out after Vector Prime but Star by Star was the last book I purchased until the reboot.

It didn't help that all three of them sucked out loud.

I don't think anyone disagrees that they are terrible at marketing their live action flicks. It's very doubtful imo that TFA will even surpass ROTS/AOTC at the box office.

Interesting Yuuzhan Fun Fact: Vong was the name of a restaurant that a bunch of suits over at Del Rey used to eat at and Yuuzhan more or less came off the tea menu.

Who the hell thought up that crap; Verbal Kint?

Maybe we should ask the Mon Calamari. :shifty: Seems to be a theme here.

John Carter didn't suck, not remotely. It just didn't have name recognition. (Why they didn't call the movie Barsoom-something, which does have name recognition, I've no idea.)

ST (Sequel Trilogy) :techman:

Is Marvel doing any books that will cover post-The Force Awakens?
I assume they will. Right now they're doing post-prequel trilogy (Kanan, the Last Padawan), between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars, Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Lando) and post-original trilogy (Shattered Empire).

We do kind of know why they didn't call it John Carter "of Mars": Hollywood still assumes that putting the word Mars in your title means box-office poison, having gotten the wrong message from the failure of Mars Needs Moms.

There are also weird rules that govern how many trailers a studio can release to theaters to run before films. There are certain time frames, lengths and number of trailers that can be run at a time. I know this because my wife was constantly waiting for the next Hobbit trailer.

Also, Hollywood seems to have gotten over it's fear of Mars with a movie like "The Martian." John Carter failed because the director thought it had more name recognition than it actually did. Also, the rules of the world were kind of weird.

All that aside, I there will be much more as December approaches.

I have a feeling if they're going to do post-TFA stuff they'll probably wait and announce all of that kind of stuff after the movie comes out. We also have at least two more movies after TFA in this period, so there is a chance we might not even do books or comics or anything directly after TFA just in case Episode VIII ends up taking place right after TFA.

Agreed. I loved John Carter.

I've been calling the new movies the Sequel Trilogy ever since Episodes VII, VIII and IX were first announced. Prequel, Original and Sequel. It sounds good rolling off the tongue.
