Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

As much as avoiding the crowds might be appealing to me, I'm probably going to see it as soon as possible. It's all anybody is going to be talking about, and I don't want have to avoid all the conversations.

I just like hearing all the conversations from people who aren't properly informed/keep up to date with SW news

"The guy that directed this directed LOST too"

or the know-it-alls"

"It's J.J Abrams. Where's all the lens flares?"

Tell them it was the same guy who rebooted Trek and you'll have enough people for a riot. Especially if the movie turns out to be shit.

There are people out there already expecting it to be so, and that Abrams will just "ruin" another franchise.

Regardless of box office numbers, I think the film will be a lot of fun :)

If it happens we won't know about it for a while. Not unless Disney has something really big up Mickey's sleeve and wants to give classic OT fans a huge surprise right around the time The Force Awakens premieres. Which I don't think is going to be the case.

Right now those of us with the 2006 Limited Edition DVD bonus discs have the original theatrical edits of each film, even if they're not restored or cleaned up in any way and have inferior sound and faded picture quality compared to the "official" DVD and Blu ray releases. Right now that's good enough, and until Disney, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox come to some kind of mutually beneficial legal arrangement regarding use of the original 1977 version of A New Hope I don't think we'll hear anything about a grand, digitally-restored release of the classic, unaltered Original Trilogy on disc or online.

Nothing that's true, anyways.

It is going to happen, and Ultra HD is the reason why. Reliance Media Works (formerly Lowry Digital) completed a 4k 16 bit restoration of Episodes IV-VI last year.

It was George's own over-reliance on CGI that did him in; the SE effects were never meant to be seen at 4k resolution. To remaster the Special Editions in 4k, all the CGI would have to be redone from scratch. (Not an impossible task, but quite pricey.) Ditto with TPM. AOTC and ROTS are disqualified from 4k, as the live-action elements were shot using first-generation digital cameras that went up to 1080p and no higher. The pre-SE film prints, however, can be easily scanned at 4k - models, animation, stopmotion and all - and for relatively cheap.

Lucas ain't in charge anymore. Disney knows how much the fans want this. Fox will have no problem striking a profit-sharing deal. It's gonna happen. It's a matter of when, not if.

*facepalm*

I guess pioneering comes at a hefty price.

Well, Disney now has no other choice but to reshoot them.

I wonder how well 1080p footage can be upscaled to 4K.

so is there some crazy rumor about Disney releasing the original versions of the OT?

John Landis said something about it yesterday, according to Empire magazine.

I'm instantly skeptical. First, why would Landis know? And second, Disney and Fox would have to come to some sort of agreement on the original film, and that doesn't seem likely.

I hated the Star Trek reboots, but if I try to imagine it as generic space opera and not Star Trek, then the movies weren't really bad at all. So I think he will to at least a good job with Star Wars, maybe even a great job. I have a new hope that this movie will be good.

No they are still awful since you have the script by OrcMan. The story just loses even further coherence once removed from the context of Star Trek.

It does appear to be not credible unless he maybe he has friends in high places at Lucasfilms and Disney.

Yeah, you're right. I was just trying to say something nice.

They were awful.

I hope this movie isn't.

Meh, I thought they were good. Then again I actually bothered to watch the show it was based on aka TOS NOT TNG.

Agreed. I thought Abrams did a good job capturing the spirit of adventure of TOS in his films. Plus, some interesting social commentary, especially in 09. But, that is a topic for another thread ;)

I think that Abrams has a good idea of what makes SW worked, and will at least attempt to make that happen on screen. I certainly see the potential for Disney or LFL having specific ideas and scenes they want in the film that may have to added.

Still optimistic.
