Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I'm personally hoping for a healthy mix of both new and old. There's no reason that can't be accomplished.

I'd hope Luke/Leia/Han ALL die than sacrifice the scope/theme/emphasis of the Sequel Trilogy on the Younger Generation.

That just depends on the story they're trying to tell. There's no reason they can't be alive and be secondary to the new characters.

That depends on how restrained Abrams and Kasdan can be. But looking at the past history of Hollywood and the SW franchise, restraint is something we rarely have

This.

The studio and producers know good and well that the classic faces and characters from the OT are going to help drive business to the new Sequel Trilogy. Wiping most of them out over the course of the next two films probably isn't a smart business decision on the part of Disney and Lucasfilm, and the new generation of actors and characters can be highlighted without the passing of the torch necessarily having to be a tragic one.

3PO and R2 have been damaged several times. I'd still rather they continue, if only so they can be our eyes to the story. With R2 being the only one that knows the whole thing.

Though I know my friend really hopes 3PO will be ended forever. He's loathed 3PO since the first film in 1977.

I think 3PO and R2 are the only safe characters. I don't want Leia or Han to die, they are my favourite OT characters, Luke on the other hand (pun intended) give him a good passing the torch/sacrificing himself death.

We would like our old heroes to live. But at what cost to the story? This is a tale about the next generation (of Skywalkers).

Right. There's no reason why Princess Leia can't be busy with running the galaxy while the new generation takes over the action after the old one passes the torch. There's no need to kill them all to do it.

I'm fine with Han going out in a blaze of glory, because that's how I always pictured him going. "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Han" and all that.

But Princess Leia has a different destiny, to lead. If she were killed off relatively young before seeing her efforts come to fruition and bringing peace to most of the galaxy, I would be bummed. There's no reason she can't do that from a secondary role after the first film.

Luke seems relatively safe unless they find someone else to start teaching everyone Jedi skills and rebuild the Jedi Order.

Wasn't the reason Abrams and Kasdan took over from Ardnt's script was so they could feature the OT characters more?

Which is kind of funny, since a lot of the marketing (so far) is focusing on the new characters, although there was the glimpse of R2, Han and Chewie in the trailer (Although we do see Luke's hand at least, and possibly Leia's being handed the saber), and the Millenium Falcon in both, plus both in the recent Vanity fair article (Which, again, features mostly new characters).

I hope it's way better than this. This almost looks like a higher-budget Christmas special custome.

Or as another person at another board wrote:
Why kids will thrill from hours of play with their new Lesbian Trucker Leia figure.

Don't go there. Please refrain from such allusions from now on. You may be quoting another person on another site, but that really isn't kosher here on THIS site.

I would not mind if the original characters die IF their deaths contribute to the story in a significant way.
Don't see a need to do everything in the first film though- keep each film as a complete story but spread out the significant moments across the trilogy.

I have a feeling it's going to happen to one of the big three.

Can't say I'm a fan of it (or the 'if done well' trope - everything is good 'if done well') but I already had to go through Optimus Prime dying so I'll get over it.

I would. Character deaths are lazy writing, and pointless. Kind of like death in real life. Nothing good ever comes from it. That's why we should never see it in fiction. At least there it's controllable.

Probably.

But hey, we get Han Solo back for at least one more film so let Harrison have whichever reasons he had!

I would argue the same for introducing a bunch of new characters that are claimed to heroes of the new trilogy and to potentiallt sideline them for Han/Leia/Luke. Between the two options I would definitely go for character deaths of the older cast.

There are lots of rumors going around. None are proof until December comes around.
One is that Leia will not survive the prologue having died following the birth of her child(ren) as either a prisoner of the remains of the Empire, or in the crashed Star Destroyer on Jakku. Meaning she's been dead for years and only seen in flashbacks or background informational story material (like the bits in Star Trek (2009) dealing with USS Kelvin, or Kirk and Spock as kids until we get to the "present")

Han Solo dying is also possible to hand over the Falcon to the next generation. I'd rather he live, because Han Solo is a fun character.

The only one that probably needs to live on is Luke, and only because someone has to teach these kids about the Force.

I don't really see any way Leia could die during childbirth. If Rey is in fact her and Han's daughter then that would have had to have happened 20-30 years ago, and unless they deage Carrie Fisher or for some reason she aged twice as fast as Han Luke the timeline and Carrie's age just wouldn't really work out.
As for one of the big three dying, Han seems the most likely to me. From an out of universe perspective, we know Harrison Ford has been the most reluctant of the big three, so I could see Han getting a big heroic death being one of the things that lured him back. Kind of like Leonard Nimoy and Wrath of Kahn.
Now from an in universe and story perspective, Han is probably the least useful of the big three. Leia is a major political player and Luke is the last Jedi, all Han can do is fly a ship really well, and shoot stuff, neither of which are that unique in this universe. I love the character, but he does seem like he would be the easiest of the big 3 to kill.
